Steps to Protect Your IdentityOver 14 million people fell victim to identity theft in 2018 and the trend doesn’t seem to be slowing. That’s why protecting your personal information has never been more important. Following a few simple strategies can help keep your identity safe.
Always shred confidential documents when you no longer need them. Do the same with outdated digital media. While it’s tempting to make a few bucks off selling old hard drives and tapes, it isn’t worth the risk of having your identity stolen. Even erased devices can contain sensitive personal data. In addition to our document shredding services, DataSafe can help you securely destroy tapes and hard drives.
Store personal documents in a safe place. Just remember to keep duplicate copies in a secure alternate location in case you’re unable to access the originals. DataSafe can help you with that, too!
Cybercrime and identity theft go hand in hand, so keep your guard up when online. Ransomware attacks are on the rise and victims often fork out significant sums of cash to “free” their files. Update the virus and malware detection software on all your devices.
Identity theft criminals scour Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for personal information. Keep your social media accounts private and don’t post travel arrangements, vacation dates, or other personal details to anyone other than family and friends.
Phishing emails can be difficult to spot. Always verify the sender’s email address before clicking on a link. Keep an eye out for misspellings and grammar mistakes, which may signal that the email originated from outside the country. And never open attachments from people you don’t know.

and Future
The Legacy Tape EraThe tape problems of the past
were numerous and resulted in time-consuming issues. Cartridge load
problems and crimping were common. The tracks were written on the edge of the tape media and dropping a cartridge often meant a non-readable tape. Metal particle (non-oxidized) media life was typically 4-10 years before concerns about readability arose. As the issues persisted, the hard drive industry took advantage of these concerns and actively pronounced “tape is dead”.
The Tape Renaissance EraThe advent of LTO (Linear Tape Open) marked the beginning
of the tape renaissance. LTO was originally developed in the late 1990s as an alternative to the numerous magnetic tape formats that were available at the time. Today, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, and Quantum comprise the LTO Consortium, which directs development and manages licensing and certification of media and mechanism manufacturers. The standard form-factor of LTO technology is named Ultrium and the original LTO-1 version was released in 2000 with a 100 GB native cartridge capacity. The eighth generation of LTO Ultrium was announced in Oct. 2017 and can hold 12 TB native (30 TB compressed) in a cartridge the same physical size as LTO-1. The LTO program borrowed many key technologies from the hard drive industry. Giant Magneto Resistive read/write heads, a mainstay with hard drives, were implemented in tape and were superior to conventional metal particle heads because they are more sensitive and can detect much weaker and smaller signals further improving reliability. Barium ferrite media arrived with LTO-6 and offered greater capacity, superior performance, and much longer archival life. Laboratory demonstrations using barium ferrite have indicated cartridge capacities of over 200 TBs are achievable. Beyond barium ferrite, strontium ferrite is in the labs promising even higher capacities.
The Contemporary Tape EraThe reliability changes engineered from the tape renaissance
vaulted tape into the top spot in storage device reliability with a Bit Error Rate more reliable than hard drives. Tape data rates have soared and reached 400 MB/sec - more than twice the data rate of most HDDs. Tape continues to be the greenest (lowest energy cost) of all storage technologies and many industry studies indicate the hard drive total cost of ownership to be 6-15x higher than tape.
