Seven years ago director Sheldon Wilson set out to tell a story involving crooked cops, a mafia Godfather, murder, a public poisoning, Elvis Presley, prison gang leaders and a cocaine-addicted newspaper editor who printed it all. As it turns out, this was just the beginning of the story.

ONCE UPON A CRIME: The Borrelli - Davis Conspiracy, follows the extraordinary story of two innocent men whose lives are torn apart solely because of their race. Mike Borrelli, an Italian-American NYPD detective and his partner Bob Davis, one of the first African-American detectives in New York, are convicted for committing first-degree murder for one of New York’s most notorious crime bosses. But Mike Borrelli and Bob Davis are innocent. Law enforcement agents know it too, but they are hell bent to connect the murder to the mafia; incredibly, they give the known gunman immunity and place him into witness protection in exchange for his false testimony against the two officers. This film reveals the shocking details of this unimaginable injustice as the filmmakers embark on a tireless search for the known gunman, still in hiding.

THE STORY

Page 3: A Film by Sheldon Wilsononceuponacrimedoc.com/PressKit/OUAC.pdf · A Film by Sheldon Wilson An inspiring story of friendship that explores the truly unbelievable ... such composers

It all started seven years ago when I discovered a story too improbable to be true but too incredible to forget. In the beginning I started to dig into the story just to satisfy my own curiosity. It wasn’t long before I realized I was asking questions that many people didn’t want to answer.

I knew I was onto something when the head of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation suggested that, “If I was smart, I’d stay out of Colorado all together.” I had struck a nerve. There was something in Denver, Colorado that their top law enforcement official didn’t want me to find. That just made me more determined to find it. I put my camera in the car and headed for Denver.

Little did I know that I would spend the next five years traveling across the United States in search of a murder suspect who had been placed into witness protection. Terry Lee D’Prero admitted to being one of the two gunmen who had killed Hal Levine, but instead of going to prison, Colorado law enforcement gave him immunity and a new life in witness protection in exchange for his self-serving testimony against Mike Borrelli and Bob Davis.

The deeper I dug the more obsessed I became with finding Terry D’Prero, even though I knew the chance of ever tracking

him down was slim to none. I had an obligation to tell this story as completely as possible, and for better or for worse, Terry D’Prero was a key part of it. It certainly didn’t help that the head of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation was well aware of my desire to find Terry and was doing everything within his control to prevent it.

Luckily, by the time I realized the seriousness of the situation I had put myself in, it was too late to turn back. Seven years and some eight thousand miles later, I am very grateful to those who stuck with me and saw this film through to the end.

It would be an understatement to say that making this documentary has been a life changing experience, one that was often infuriating, fascinating, shocking and sometimes absurdly funny. However, through it all the two men at the center of this story, Mike Borrelli and Bob Davis, have shown me the true meaning of friendship and through their actions, they have demonstrated the strong moral compass necessary to fight for justice through the worst of adversities.

I can only hope this film will help to reverse the wrongs done to these men; two men who so rightly deserve to have their names cleared.
