Page 1: A Field Guide of Failure

With the abundance of tools and processes being created, remixed and utilized there has never been a greater time to be a UX designer. However it often seems that all of us on this journey seldom have a roadmap when projects go horribly wrong. It is only through learning from the trials and tribulations of other designers that we can learn to avoid pitfalls of the perilous journey of UX design. By teaching experiences, adopting a mutable process and learning the benefits of iterative design we all contribute to the field guide of failure.

“Do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and

start again.”

-Richard Branson

Page 34: A Field Guide of Failure
Page 35: A Field Guide of Failure

Failure is not an option, it’s an outcome.

Page 36: A Field Guide of Failure

Recognizing failure means focusing on outcomes.

Page 37: A Field Guide of Failure

Recognizing the failure is the first step to recovering from it.

Page 38: A Field Guide of Failure

Here’s my plan for recovery from failure.

Page 39: A Field Guide of Failure

S.M.A.R.T. GOALS FOR RECOVERY

SPECIFIC - MEASURABLE - ACTIONABLE - RELATIVE - TRACKABLE

Page 40: A Field Guide of Failure

SPECIFICWhat exactly went wrong? How do we define success?

Page 41: A Field Guide of Failure

MEASURABLEHow badly did things go wrong?

How much did this cost us?

Page 42: A Field Guide of Failure

ACTIONABLEWhat can or will I do to correct it?

How do we achieve success?

Page 43: A Field Guide of Failure

RELATIVEHow bad is this compared to

past failure or success?

Page 44: A Field Guide of Failure

TRACKABLEHow am I capturing all of this and

holding myself accountable?

Page 45: A Field Guide of Failure

Mitigate future risk by analyzing past failures.

Page 46: A Field Guide of Failure

Jared Spool cracks me up.

Page 47: A Field Guide of Failure
Page 48: A Field Guide of Failure
Page 49: A Field Guide of Failure

Failure is not necessary for learning but learning from

failures is necessary for success.

Page 50: A Field Guide of Failure

Share your failures as much as you share your success.

Page 51: A Field Guide of Failure

Empathize with other’s failures. Analyze the outcomes.

Actualize success.

Page 52: A Field Guide of Failure

Encourage and embrace constructive criticism.

Page 53: A Field Guide of Failure

Failure gives us a sounding board both internally and externally.

Page 54: A Field Guide of Failure

Fallor ergo sum.I err, therefore I am.

-Saint Augustine

Page 55: A Field Guide of Failure

"Our capacity to screw up is not some kind of embarrassing defect in the human system, not something we should eradicate or overcome.

It's totally fundamental to who we are."

-Kathryn Schulz

Page 56: A Field Guide of Failure

But how can we fail without feeling like failures?

Page 57: A Field Guide of Failure

Develop a mutable process.

Page 58: A Field Guide of Failure

Take an iterative approach.
