In today’s world, we have many choices – sometimes, we feel, more than we can handle. Then we are humbled when we learn ofthe choices faced by the parents of the children of St. Jude Children’sResearch Hospital. Their choices involve medicines with frightening side effects –experimental drugs which may not save their child, but will save future generations.
These parents wish their toughest choice was the one you have made to join ustoday. Instead, they have chosen a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, in which theyentrust their children to people who fight for life.
Tonight, remember those who can neither be comforted nor healed...yet. It isthrough the generous donations of compassionate people, such as yourself, thatgreat strides have been made at St. Jude. Today’s fashion show is one of thethousands of ways in which generous people across the nation unite in a commonbond of love and community to realize Danny Thomas’ dream.
On behalf of the committee, we thank you for choosing this particular event on thisSunday afternoon to help us move closer to our insistence that the world MUST becured of childhood catastrophic diseases. And, in the names of those who, throughno choice of their own, cannot be here to express their appreciation, we thank youfor making a difference in the lives of others.

St. Jude FamilyAlethea McIlrath’s St. Jude story began the first week ofJanuary 2004 when at the age of 8 1/2 months she was takento the St. Jude affiliate clinic in Peoria, IL and diagnosed withAcute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Two days later, Alethea andher parents were in Memphis, TN getting ready to do battlewith this deadly cancer. The news of this rarer leukemia andthe need for more radical treatment meant that Alethea wouldhave to remain in Memphis for the full six months of veryintense chemotherapy. The McIlraths became residents of
Target House, an amazing facility designed to house St. Jude patients and theirfamilies who are facing long-term treatment.
Alethea successfully completed her treatment with many struggles and scares alongthe way, but at every step the St. Jude staff was there with their love and expertiseto make the necessary difference between tragedy and triumph. Today, Alethea is2 1/2 years old and has been in remission for 18 months. Alethea continues tohave blood tests locally and returns periodically to Memphis for checkups whereshe marvels at all the people who seem to know her so well and love her so much.
Honorary Co-ChairsPatti Blagojevich, First Lady of Illinois
Since Patti Blagojevich’s husband, Governor Rod Blagojevich, took office in January2001, she has taken a proactive and integrated approach to her duties as First Lady.Patti sees her role as an opportunity to support and promote efforts and programson behalf of women, children and seniors of Illinois — programs which her husbandhas made priorities of his administration.
Patti's number one concern is for the well-being of all Illinois families. As a motherof two daughters, Amy (age 9), and Annie (age 2), Patti understands the value andimportance of a healthy family unit. From the moment that Amy was first welcomedinto the Blagojevich family, Patti made parenting her top priority.
Currently, she owns her own real estate company, and splits her time among herfamily, her business and her commitment, as First Lady, to undertaking programsthat will help to strengthen Illinois communities.
Katherine Stephens, First Lady of RosemontAs a dedicated interior designer, Katherine Stephens has devoted her professionallife to helping people live in beautiful environments. The wife of one of Illinois’ mostprominent public servants, Rosemont’s Mayor Donald E. Stephens, Katherine isoften called upon to support and serve in a voluntary capacity. She has dedicatedher time, resources and contributions to fund-raising efforts and events includingHelping Hands in Rosemont. So, it’s easy to understand her instant willingness tohelp St. Jude.
St. Jude Quick Facts
• St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, founded by the late entertainer DannyThomas, maintains 60 inpatient beds and treats about 180 patients each day, about 4,700 in active status, most of whom are treated on an outpatient basis.
• It is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic andclinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer. St. Jude isthe largest childhood cancer research center in the world in terms of the numberof patients enrolled in research protocols and successfully treated.
• Since opening in 1962, St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and morethan 70 foreign countries.
• Research findings at St. Jude are shared with doctors and scientists all over theworld. St. Jude also enjoys a worldwide reputation as a teaching facility. Themedical and scientific staff published about 450 articles in academic journals in2004.
• St. Jude, which is non-sectarian, treats children without regard to race, religion, creed or ability to pay. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research centerwhere families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, andfamilies without insurance are never asked to pay.
• The hospital’s daily operating costs are $1,027,832, which are primarilycovered by public contributions.
• During the past five years, 84.3 percent of every dollar received by ALSAC/St.Jude has gone to the current or future needs of St. Jude.
• St. Jude pioneered a combination of chemotherapy, radiation and, whennecessary, surgery to treat childhood cancers. The hospital continues to expandthe use of bone marrow transplantation as a treatment for pediatric cancers andgenetic diseases.
• St. Jude operates a bone marrow transplant program that enables doctors toperform approximately 170 transplant infusions per year.
• St. Jude was the first facility outside the National Institutes of Health to receivefederal approval for research involving human gene therapy.
• Peter C. Doherty, PhD, of the St. Jude Immunology department, won the NobelPrize for Physiology or Medicine in 1996. He shares the award with Rolf M.Zinkernagel, MD, of the University of Zurich. Their findings have led to majorbreakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of viral infections and cancers, and in the development of organ transplant procedures and vaccines.
• Since its inception, St. Jude has developed protocols that have brought survivalrates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent to more than 70 percentoverall. The current survival rates for selected childhood cancers now include:
Current St. JudeDiagnosis Survival Rate
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) 85%Hodgkin disease (cancer of the lymph system) 90%Medulloblastoma (brain tumor) 75%Wilms tumor (kidney tumor) 90%
• In 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the mostcommon form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate forthis once deadly disease is 85 percent thanks to research and treatmentprotocols developed at St. Jude.
• To treat a child with standard-risk ALL requires a 2 1/2-year protocol at a costof $500,000.
• Each St. Jude patient must be referred by a physician, have a disease currentlyunder study at the hospital, be eligible for a current research protocol and, generally, be 18 years old or younger.
• St. Jude researchers and doctors are treating children with genetic immunedefects and pediatric AIDS, as well as using new drugs and therapies to fightinfections.
• St. Jude is a World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Studies on theEcology of Influenza Viruses in Animals and Birds.
• The St. Jude faculty includes three National Academy of Sciences members: PeterC. Doherty, PhD, of Immunology; Charles Sherr, MD, PhD, of Tumor Cell Biology;and Robert Webster, PhD, of Infectious Diseases. Sherr, James Ihle, PhD, ofBiochemistry, and Brenda Schulman, PhD, Structural Biology, hold the covetedtitle of Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators.
• St. Jude continues an extensive expansion program to bolster the hospital’sresearch and treatment efforts, more than doubling the size of the original St.Jude campus. The expansion includes a recently opened GMP building, thenation’s only pediatric research center on-site facility for production of highlyspecialized medicines and vaccines; an Integrated Research Center, housing aChildren’s Infection Defense Center; and an expanded Immunology Department.Future growth will include a new Integrated Patient Care and Research Buildingwhere rapidly evolving CT (computerized tomography) and MR (magneticresonance) technology will keep St. Jude at the cutting edge for radiation therapyin a pediatric/adolescent setting.
