A Letter from the Pastor
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 12, 2015
2855 Briarcliff Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30329
Through worship, education, and service, we continue the work of Jesus.
phone: 404-636-1418 fax: 404-636-4394
Dear friends in Christ,
The summer months are often a time of transition: families move
to new homes between school years; priests receive their new assignments.
(In fact, as I read in The Georgia Bulletin of the many priests whose new
ministries began last week, I was all the more grateful that I was permitted
to come to IHM several months earlier than normal.)
Summer is often also a time of transition on parish staffs, and that
is the case for us at IHM this year. Paul Tooher retires as Parish Business
Manager and School Director of Finance this month. I do not have to tell
you how grateful our parish should be to Paul for his wise and steady fiscal
leadership these last 17 years—especially during the planning and
construction of our new church building and during the interval between
pastors this last year.
Our new Business Manager/Finance Director is Richard Plachta.
A native of Chicago, Rich holds a BS from Loyola Chicago, an MS in
Accountancy from DePaul and a CPA from the University of Illinois. I
have known Rich and his family for nearly 25 years, and I am grateful that
someone of his fiscal background and church savvy (Rich was in the minor
seminary many years ago) is available to continue Paul’s outstanding work.
Please join me in offering Paul Tooher our deepest gratitude and
best wishes for retirement and Rich Plachta a warm welcome to IHM.
This month our Parish Life Coordinator, Elizabeth Figueroa,
leaves the parish staff to join the counseling department at Marist School. I
learned quickly after my arrival at IHM of Elizabeth’s many gifts and
generous spirit. I know you all join me in wishing her every happiness in
her new work at Marist.
May the Lord bless us all this summer, in our comings and our
goings, in our new undertakings and our ongoing commitments.

WANTING MORE FROM GOD - MONASTERY RETREAT August 14-16 Many of us feel lonely at times and God can strike us as more
of a concept than a living reality. Some of us go through the
motions and meet our obligations, but with an inner emptiness,
as if we are missing out somehow. Prayer can seem like God
is not listening or doesn’t really care, and we can be tempted to
give up. This retreat provides tools for becoming more aware
of the Loving Presence and Action of the Living God—a
recognition that can imbue everyday life with meaning and
purpose. Contact Patti at the Monastery in Conyers for a
reservation: 770-760-0959 or [email protected].
“A spirituality which forgets God as all-powerful and
Creator is not acceptable. That is how we end up
worshipping earthly powers, or ourselves usurping
the place of God, even to the point of claiming an
unlimited right to trample his creation underfoot.
The best way to restore men and women to their
rightful place, putting an end to their claim to
absolute dominion over the earth, is to speak once
more of the figure of a Father who creates and who
alone owns the world.” (75)

Create “God loves you” cards with your family. Give the cards to people with whom you want to share the good news of God’s love.
Sit down with your family and share your Catholic heritage. Explain how the Catholic faith was handed down through the family. Talk about ways you celebrate your Catholic identity today.

ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
G.I.F.T. REGISTRATION
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I : Amos 7:12-15 The Lord has called and sent me.
The prophet Amos preached at a time when God's people were divided into two
kingdoms, Judah in the south and Israel in the north.
God calls Amos to give the northern kingdom of Israel an unpleasant message.
When Amos's message is not welcome, he points out that the choice to become
a prophet was not his own.
Reading II : Ephesians 1:3-14 We have been chosen in Christ.
The letter to the Ephesians begins with a great hymn of praise.
All people have been chosen by God in Christ, even before creation.
Christians are redeemed by Christ and sealed with the Holy Spirit.
Gospel : Mark 6:7-13
He sent them out to preach and teach, giving them power to do so.
In the Gospel story from Mark, Jesus sends the disciples out to do his work.
Today's passage immediately follows the story of Jesus' rejection in Nazareth.
If Jesus is rejected, the disciples continuing his work should also expect rejec-
tion.

REGISTRACIONES DE G.I.F.T.
mía a Israel, mi pueblo”.

STEWARDSHIP
SPACE FOR ADS
TRUSTING IN GOD Jesus teaches us to trust in his words and through his actions. He tells us to remember that if God cares
for the birds and the flowers, surely God will care for us; and he reminds us to not be afraid; fear wears
away trust quickly and deeply. At key moments in his life and ministry, we are told that Jesus spent
significant time in prayer, discerning and committing to the Father’s loving will, and he teaches us to do
the same.

Please be generous in assisting the needy in

“All This I Do For the Sake of the Gospel”
We have reached our goal in pledges for the 2015 Archbishop’s An-
nual Appeal! But we really should be achieving TWICE our goal
each year, since AAA funds received over and above our goal return
to us at IHM without any Archdiocesan assessment! Our gifts help
the charitable works of the Archdiocese AND they help our parish.
If you have not already made a pledge to the 2015 AAA, please visit
http://appeal.archatl.com to make your pledge today!
Thank you to all who have already pledged! Remember to look for
your monthly pledge reminders, and please do your best to honor
your pledge before the end of the year. If you are having any
difficulty whatsoever with your pledge or pledge reminders, please
contact Paul Tooher at [email protected] or 404-636-1418,
ext. 245.
Deo Gratias! We are grateful to all of our parishioners who have remembered this parish in their wills or estate
plans. Did you know that persons who have made a planned gift for our parish automatically receive membership
in the Deo Gratias Society of the Catholic Foundations of North Georgia? Among other benefits, this member-
ship includes an invitation to the annual Deo Gratias Society Mass and luncheon with Archbishop Gregory in
September. If you have already included our parish in your will or estate plans, but have not informed the parish
office, please let us know so we can coordinate your invitation to the September event—or call The Catholic
Foundation directly at 404-497-9440.

12 DE JULIO DE 2015 DECIMOQUINTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
CARTA ENCÍCLICA
LAUDATO SI’
