A Letter from Msgr. Al Jowdy

Third Sunday of Easter April 19, 2015

Dear friends in the Risen Lord,

The Church knows how to celebrate! It fills Holy Saturday night with

the Light of Christ that finally and utterly shatters the darkness. The great

Easter Vigil is followed by Sunday after Sunday of reflections on the tri-

umph of light over darkness and life over death. I am delighted to be

joining the IHM family during this season of new life!

This is a propitious time for new beginnings: The Easter readings from

the Acts of the Apostles will remind us week after week of the work of the

Holy Spirit in animating our first Christian ancestors; every day Pope

Francis is modeling for the world a servant’s heart and calling forth the best

from us; here in Atlanta, Archbishop Gregory has just published the recom-

mendations of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan, which will engage the

imagination of every parish and school for some time to come.

Whether the proclamation “Christ is risen!” is spoken in amazement in

Aramaic or written with quills on vellum in Latin, or tweeted on an

iPhone, the reality remains the same: Our lives as baptized people must

validate this proclamation. The life of Christ who is risen has been given to

us. We must receive it wholly and live it daily. Wherever we find ourselves,

there we are. And there is where salvation is possible. We have the 50 days

of Easter to celebrate all of this; we have a lifetime to ponder it.

I look forward to getting to know you, learning how I can best serve

you, and together learning how we can best serve this Risen Lord.

Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

2855 Briarcliff Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30329

Through worship, education, and service, we continue the work of Jesus.

National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence

Immaculate Heart of Mary

Catholic School

April 19, 2015 Opportunities to Provide Long-Term Support

for IHM School IHM School has a number of giving opportunities which

allow donors to make lasting gifts to IHM. The School has both

a planned giving program and endowment funds that provide

long-term support, ensuring an IHM School education will be

available for many years to come.

What is Planned Giving?

A planned gift is the best way to ensure

that your loved ones are provided for and

that your preferred philanthropies, such as IHM School, are supported as you

intend. The Immaculate Heart Society recognizes IHM School supporters who are

providing for the school in their estate planning. A planned gift to IHM School

furthers the school’s mission and leaves a lasting legacy of support.

What is an Endowment Fund?

An endowment fund is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding. Endowment assets are

invested and each year, if fully endowed, a portion of the value of the fund is paid out to support

the fund’s purpose.

How many Endowment Funds are there at IHM School?

The School has five endowment funds. The School’s Endowment Fund, with a current principal of

$315,000, must reach $1M in principal before distributions can be made. The school has four other

endowment funds, all of which fund scholarships. Two are fully endowed while the other two must

reach $25,000 in principal before any distributions are made.

What is the purpose of IHM School’s Endowment Fund?

The two primary goals are to provide need-based scholarships and

to cultivate academic leadership through enhanced classroom

resources, professional development opportunities and funding for

continuing education programs and advanced degrees for teachers.

Please consider making a donation to IHM School’s Endowment Fund or making a planned gift. You may contribute by visiting www.ihmschool.org and choosing the “support IHM” tab, sending a donation directly to the school, or by contacting IHM School’s Development Director Jennifer Sedlack at 404-636-4488.

FORMACION EN LA FE

ACTIVIDAD DE LA SEMANA

Elija una de las siguientes actividades para

seguir reflexionando sobre las lecturas del

domingo:

¿Qué pasaría si no fueran

Dios parecería distinto si no estuviera

tinieblas. ¿Puede la luz vencer a las

tinieblas? ¿Pueden las tinieblas vencer a la

luz? Piense en una linterna en un lugar

oscuro; ¿puede la oscuridad prevalecer

sobre la luz de la linterna?

ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

Choose one of the following activities as a

way to further reflect on the Sunday

readings:

Ask each member of your family to

discuss one way in which the Resurrection

of Jesus makes their relationship with God

stronger. What would happen if they were

not aware of Jesus’ life, teachings, and

Resurrection? In what way would God

appear different if he did not possess the

qualities of each person of the Trinity?

Make a list of life events that have

occurred in the history of your family that

were examples of God's mercy. Discuss

why that mercy was not deserved. Does

God decide that one person (or persons)

deserves mercy over another?

Ask each member of the family how they

can be a light in a world of darkness. Can

light conquer darkness? Can darkness

conquer light? Think of a flashlight in a

dark place: Can the darkness prevail over

the light of the flashlight?

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Acts 3:13–15, 17–19; 1 John 2:1–5a; Luke 24:35–48 If you have ever committed a wrong for which you were terribly ashamed,

today’s First Reading may provide comfort. Peter seems to be chastising

those who have gathered around him. And indeed, a large group has gathered

in amazement, since Peter had just healed a lame man. After asking why the

people stare in wonder, Peter confronts them about their role in Jesus’ death.

But he is not sending a guilt-ridden message; he wants the people to know of

God’s mercy. Even though they turned their backs on Jesus, God will forgive.

God’s mercy is open to us, no matter the wrong we have done.

Peter knows well how Christ not only awaits us to come into union with him

but is searching us out. It is reasonable to surmise that Peter would have been

among the disciples to whom Jesus appeared, saying, “Peace be with you.”

Two disciples had just announced how they had recognized Jesus in the

breaking of the bread. Still, the disciples were startled to see Jesus. Without

prompting, Jesus explains that he is the fulfillment of what has been written

in the Scriptures.

Those in the room comprise the witnesses, but we are also witnesses. In the

document “Disciples Called to Witness,” the bishops of the United States

state that “it is through common human experiences that the Word of God is

revealed to us.” Are you open to seeing God in the actions of the Holy Spirit

in your life?

¿Puedes percibir a Dios

en las acciones del Espíritu Santo?

STEWARDSHIP

SPACE FOR ADS

April 19: Taxes are done so what do you need to do now to plan for the future? When was the last

time you checked the beneficiary on all your retirement accounts and bank accounts?

With all the changes we go through in this world we need to keep these items up to date. You can name

the parish endowment fund at The Catholic Foundation of North Georgia as a beneficiary of these

accounts. This way the proceeds will go straight to the parish fund and no taxes will be due. Leave

insurance to the children and IRA’s and other taxable accounts to charity. To learn more about the many

ways you can create a Catholic legacy, please contact: Diane Duquette, Director of Gift Planning at The

Catholic Foundation: 404-497-9440 or email her at [email protected]. Also go to the foundation

website to learn more about planned gifs: www.cfnga.org.

LOVE LAVISHLY Jesus’ very life is witness and testimony to the lavish love God has for humanity. Learning to live as a

disciple calls us to love and give generously. “In Jesus’ teaching and life self-emptying is fundamen-

tal. Now, it might seem that self-emptying has little to do with stewardship, but in Jesus’ case, that is

not so. His self-emptying is not sterile self-denial for its own sake; rather, in setting aside self, he is

filled with the Father’s will, and he is fulfilled in just this way: ‘My food is to do the will of the one

who sent me and to finish his work’.”

SECOND COLLECTIONS

Next week’s Second Collection will

benefit Catholic Home Missions. One

way that this appeal works to strengthen

home mission dioceses in the United

States is by funding seminarian

formation in poor dioceses. The blessing

of seminarians places a financial burden

on these dioceses, where educating each

seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these

young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes.

Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to

next week’s appeal.

juntos aprender cómo podemos servirle mejor a nuestro Señor Resucitado.
