I know what you’re thinking—“What’s Doubt, and should I love it?”

“Does it matter what a day in the life of a writers’ PA looks like?”

All very reasonable questions. Doubt is a brand new show (happy first season to us!) created and show run by Joan Rater and Tony Phelan (Grey’s Anatomy). It follows the legal defense team at Isaiah Roth and Associates as they represent the underdogs, the downtrodden, and of course, criminals. Here’s the catch: top lawyer Sadie Ellis (played by Katherine Heigl) starts to fall for her charismatic client Billy Brennan (Steven Pasquale), who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime. Yes, you should love it!

And yes, a day in the life of a PA (Me) does matter. So for your reading pleasure, below is a behind the scenes look at an average day with Doubt.

7:00 a.m.: I wake up. If I’m lucky, the bun I slept in can pass as intentionally messy laissez-faire work place hair, and before you know it I’m in my car en route to CBS Studio Center.

7:26 a.m.: Waiting for the green arrow left turn at Ventura and Radford.

7:30 a.m.: I open up Building 3! This means a lot of lights get turned on, a dishwasher gets emptied, call sheets and white boards are updated, and lots of doors get unlocked. I always open up our Showrunners’ offices first because they’re usually first to arrive. Tony is often here before me, which makes me feel like I’m slacking but I swear I’m not.

8:00 a.m.: Time to grocery shop! It’s important to keep the kitchen fully stocked with office favorites and necessities.

9:30 a.m.: Joan and Tony really encourage total office participation, so if ever I have down time,

Drone use at Cbs studio CenterWe have had several incursions of unauthorized drones over CBS Studio Center . This has impacted productions and other events on our lot . Recently a drone was used to capture video of one of our live filmed productions, causing a significant disruption, as well as safety and security concerns . Because of this, extra vigilance regarding unauthorized drone intrusions is taking place . To avoid false alarms, and comply with both federal law and CBS policy, please follow the guideline below if you intend to use a drone at CBS Studio Center .

Drones may be used for production purposes at CBS Studio Center, but their use must be carefully controlled, and coordinated with the Environmental Health &Safety (EHS) and Security departments . All drone operators must have documentation that they have both passed the new FAA operator test or have previously obtained a FAA section 333 exemption, and have insurance that meets the requirements of CBS Risk Management .

All of this takes a bit of time to coordinate, so please notify EHS as early in your planning process as possible, and we will help you coordinate with the correct personnel in Security and Risk Management .

3:00-4:00 p.m.: There’s so much paper floating around our office, so in the afternoon I try to read up on outlines, story docs, and drafts. I’ll update timelines, character bibles, and most importantly (CBS back me up on this) clearances!! All of this is obviously done with the help of my fellow support staff—best support staff on the lot as far as I’m concerned.

4:00-6:00 p.m.: I don’t know if this has become clear yet, but food is an important part of the creative process for our staff, cast, and crew. So, the writer and director of every episode treat us all to a treat truck! I often coordinate between the truck and our wonderful transpo team and our equally wonderful production team. Today is a crepe truck! So, you’re welcome for making the whole lot smell delicious.

6:00-8:00 p.m.: The room breaks! Writers are released into the wild. And by wild I mean our bullpen. Even though we all spend so much time together throughout the day, this is when we have major group debriefs, headlines, and summations—closing arguments, you could say (Kidding! We’re not actually lawyers!) I do a clean sweep of the room, wipe down the kitchen, load up that dishwasher, and check out the schedule for tomorrow. I stay till all my writers have gone and then make my own way home.

9:00 p.m.: I’m home! And my hair still looks entirely mediocre. Life is good. No doubt about it.

A DAY WITHOUT DOUBT…

I go grab a seat in the writers’ room. It can get pretty raucous with case pitches, special legal consultant visits, and writers’ enactments of how they imagine a scene.

11:00 a.m.: Usually I’ll have a schedule to deliver to our writer on the episode, or I’ll pretend I do so I can go visit the set—shout out to Stage 3 and Stage 4! If I play my cards right, I’ll catch a glimpse of Dule Hill (playing the role of Albert Cobb) doing some impromptu tap dancing on stage. If I play my cards really right, I stick around for a bit and watch a perfectly executed walk-and-talk scene with our stellar ensemble cast including THE Elliott Gould (Isaiah Roth) and THE Laverne Cox (Cameron Wirth).

12:30 p.m.: Lunch, lunch, lunch. This is probably, and most accurately, the backbone of my day. Getting lunch for my writers means feeding my writers. Feeding my writers means fed writers, and fed writers are writing writers. I try to mix it up, but we’re usually having a version of salads and sandwiches.

2:00 p.m.: Table Read Time. Every episode gets its own table read. It’s one of my favorite traditions for a few reasons. First, it gets everyone in one (sometimes semi-tiny) space. Second, it’s the first time the writers get to hear the thing they’ve spent weeks on out loud and in the flesh. It’s pretty special. And if you’re me, you get to read a guest role, and occasionally catch a compliment from Mr. Gould.

Thank you to everyone who donated or attempted to donate blood at the Children’s Hospital (CHLA) Blood Drive on September 14, 2016. The blood collected at our drive makes an immediate impact on the lives of the children in need, and goes a long way toward helping replenish the CHLA community’s depleted reserves.

A total of 44 donors were seen and we were able to collect 34 precious units of blood, which can be potentially processed into 102 blood and blood components that can save just as many lives.
