Holding your new baby for the firsttime is one of life's most powerful
moments.
Not only is it an incrediblymoving experience, it's alsonecessary for well-being: Theskin-to-skin contact promotesmother-child bonding, reducesstress, and can even help withthings like breastfeedingand brain development,according to the clinicalpractice journal Nursing forWomen's Health.
Yet as many as one third ofAmerican moms—thepercentage who give birthby cesarean section each year—may not get the chance:Sterile draping used duringthe procedure often presents avisible and physical obstacle.It's not uncommon for C-section patients who want tohold their babies rightaway to hear "No, we can't do that inthe operating room," reports theRichmond Times-Dispatch.
C-section babies are typically cleanedand placed in a warmer (operatingrooms can be chilly) beforethey're handed to a parents. Sometimesit's dad who holds the infant first, whilemom watches.

Not anymore: Registered nurses Deborah Burbic,Kimberly Jarrelle and Jess Niccoli, of the Richmond, VA,area, have developed a surgical drape with a flapwindow so the doctor can pass the baby to the mother.
"When mom gets to hold that baby for the first time onher chest, it is just unbelievable, that experience," Burbictold the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "We were going, 'Howcould we make this happen in the operating room?'"
The nurses, who have a combined 50-plus years of labor-and-delivery experience among them, spent three yearsproducing 50 different prototypes before hitting on"something workable."
They brainstormed over coffee, referring tonumerous studies, some spanning 30 years,
The result is what Burbic, Jarrelle and Niccoli callthe Skin to Skin C-Section Drape. After the baby isdelivered and passed through the drape's portal, theflap can be closed, allowing surgeons to maintain thesterility of the operation room while stitching up theuterus and incision.
So far, three hospitals have agreed to test the drape.

Because of the importance placed on sterility in theoperating room, new hospital products are usually treatedwith skepticism. "It's a slow process," Burbic said.
C-sections are a disheartening "bump in the road" forsome expectant moms, according to Burbic. "They knowthat this big drape comes up [and] they [won't] get to seetheir baby being born," she said. "This is one way we canbreak that barrier."
