September 4-7, 2019 Anaheim Marriott | Anaheim, CA

Welcome to Anaheim & the CSAM Addiction Medicine Review Course and Board Exam Preparation Track 2019

A Message from the 2019 Conference Chair Addiction medicine as a field demands a lot from each of us. No longer is it sufficient to be just the capable diagnostician, pharmacologist, and avid reader of journals. Now, many of us face questions we barely anticipated.

How do we educate our patients on the risks of a substance when marketing campaigns and state laws tell them otherwise? How do we motivate our overworked colleagues to undertake the treatment of addictions? How can we make any gains in a political climate that erodes safety nets, and disenfranchises our most vulnerable patients? And perhaps most importantly: how do we preserve ourselves in doing this work? Our conference celebrates educators and advocates who have persevered despite these dilemmas. To that end, we provide a rigorous review of addiction fundamentals as usual, but with a twist: we have asked each presenter to comment on strategies for education and advocacy in their areas of expertise. Robert Lustig, MD, author of “The Hacking of the American Mind,” will discuss his work on technology and addiction. Fay Zenoff, MBA, director of the Center for Open Recovery, will discuss the role personal recovery can play in our work. We will show the documentary “The Providers,” and chat with the filmmaker and a physician featured in the film about battling the opioid crisis in rural New Mexico. A comedian in recovery will perform at our dessert reception and share her own journey to advocacy. Trainees and new arrivals to our field will have opportunities to meet mentors, and to network with colleagues throughout the meeting. The enthusiasm of our planners in crafting such a comprehensive conference, featuring diverse and memorable speakers, makes me optimistic about our field. The questions we face are big, but so is the tent we are building. See you inside. Tauheed Zaman, MD, Conference Chair University of California, San Francisco San Francisco VA Health Care System

About MERF The Medical Education and Research Foundation (MERF) for the Treatment of Addiction is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing and improving the education of physicians about all aspects of addiction, including harmful drinking or drug use, family impact, recovery and how to support it. Our primary activities are mentored learning experiences at annual, three-day conferences on addiction medicine offered by the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM). Since 1995, we have brought residents to these conferences, offering scholarships to attend, and worked side by side with them, sharing information and experience. After a few years, we began to invite the faculty of the residency treatment programs also, and in recent years, we began inviting primary care physicians to join us.

Why Donate?

We know that addictions and substance abuse disorders receive short shrift in medical schools and residency training programs despite the explosion of research and overwhelming evidence of their prevalence and treatability. Institutional medical education regarding America's number one cause of death and disability lags sorely behind the need.

To address that need, MERF is building upon its years of experience by providing annual scholarships and mentoring for physicians-in-training. Scholarship recipients demonstrate vastly improved awareness of addiction medicine science and practice. Many MERF scholars return to their home institutions and provide addiction medicine information and training for other physicians and physicians-in-training. In its work in this area, MERF has developed relationships with many residency training programs. The question is not what needs to be done; that is well known. The question is, who is going to do it? We Are!

We need your help.

Encourage your colleagues and friends to donate. Share with others the value of your MERF experiences and inform them about the California Society of Addiction Medicine Annual Conferences and the scholarship opportunities.

Please visit the MERF table in the Exhibit Hall to donate today!

MERF Mission To prevent the harm being done to patients by physicians who lack the

knowledge, skill, and training to recognize and treat addiction.
