n Thermal performanceEffective thermal insulation is becoming increasingly important for economic andenvironmental reasons, as well as personnel protection.

The thermal performance of Isover Technical Insulation solutions will greatly increasethe amount of energy saved, providing substantial measurable cost savings. Whilsthelping to prevent burns where operators may come into contact with surfacesexceeding 50C.

Acoustic performanceNoise levels emanating from HVAC (pipework, ductwork and air handling equipment)and other services can be signicantly reduced with the use of Isover TechnicalInsulation solutions. The degree of acoustic performance will depend upon theapplication, the thickness of insulation used and the type of nish used to over-cladthe insulation.

Fire performanceHow materials behave in a re, from ignition to ashover, needs to be assessed atdesign stage for all technical constructions. The majority of our Technical range ofinsulation achieves an A1 Euroclass rating when classied in accordance withBS EN 13501.

Our range of HVAC products will work to provide the most efcient insulationsolutions for pipework and ductwork, ensuring the building environment isthermally protected, has minimal noise disruption from equipment noise andis re safe. Just imagine what they can do for you.

The main objective of HVAC installations is toprovide comfort (thermal, acoustic and ventilationcomfort) for occupants of commercial dwellings, working spaces and residential buildings.

Comfort, in this sense comprises of temperaturecontrol, satisfactory indoor air quality andadequate noise levels. This can be particularlyimportant in the design of medium to largecommercial and ofce buildings where theseparameters have to be carefully controlled.

Innovation and technical leadership have ensured Saint-GobainIsover has remained at the forefront of the Technical Insulationmarket worldwide for more than 70 years.

Why insulate pipe and ductwork?I nsulation is applied for various reasonsincluding heat conservation, temperaturecontrol, condensation and noise. Within HVACapplications, some thermal losses can occurdue to the temperature of the air in the ductnot being the same as that of the surrounding

ambient air. Heat transfer between operatingand ambient conditions can represent a loss ofefciency and increase energy costs.

Thermal insulation solutions are the mostsignicant factor in heat conservationand temperature control in ductwork and cangreatly affect the amount of energy saved, providing substantial measurable cost savings.

The thermal effectiveness of ductwork relies onthe correct thickness of insulation for keepingthe air cool or warm within the ductwork system. Therefore thermal insulation in ductwork is an

    important design criteria.

Energy EfciencyGrowing awareness of climate change, theincrease of pollution in the urban areas andenergy-waste issues have encouraged theimplementation of political measures tryingto reduce consumption and improve energy

efciency in the use of energy both in industrial, residential and commercial activities. The useof technical insulation correctly selected andinstalled can provide energy savings, especiallyin air conditioning and heating, whereenergy is consumed to obtain the required

    comfort conditions.

Enhanced Capital AllowanceThe ECA Scheme covers ve categories ofpipework insulation:1. Refrigeration pipework2. Chilled water pipework3. Non-domestic heating and hot water services4. Domestic heating and hot water services5. Process pipework

Investments in pipework insulation can onlyqualify for Enhanced Capital Allowances if the

installation meets the relevant clauses, tablesand annexes of BS 5422:2009.Visit: etl.decc.gov.uk for more information.

All Isover pipe sections meet the relevantclauses under BS 5422:2009.

Isovers CLIMCOVER range ofduct-wraps and slabs couldsave a project up to 97% inenergy cost compared toun-insulated ductwork(please see pages 10-12).

    Building Regulations and Standards

The Domestic Heating Compliance Guide & TheNon-Domestic Heating, Cooling and VentilationCompliance GuideThese Tier 2 documents effectively act as Annexes to the Approved Documents and directly specifythe minimum performance requirements for pipework and ductwork insulation. The TIMSA Guide isspecically referenced in both Compliance Guides, and has been reviewed directly by the Governmenton that basis.

In January 2009 section BS 5422 of the British Standards was updated. The most signicant changeto the document being the adoption of thickness tables produced by TIMSA (Thermal InsulationManufacturers and Suppliers Association) as part of their Guidance for achieving Compliance withPart L of the Building Regulations, with some expansions. The tables offer specic information onaspects of compliance and, in particular, indicativethicknesses for insulation being applied atspecied thermal conductivities.

ScotlandBS 5422:2009 also applies in Scotland fromOctober 2010. From 2012, Editions of theTechnical Handbooks (Domestic & NonDomestic, Sections 6, Energy) produced by theScottish Building Standards, refer to BS 5422.

Isover thickness tables in relation to BritishStandards BS 5422 for pipe and ductwork can befound online at www.isover.co.uk. All calculationsare done according with the formulae given inBS EN ISO 12241: 2008, 'Thermal insulation forbuilding equipment and industrial installations'.

CondensationDuctwork and pipework can represent acondensation risk caused by localised coolingof air and a rise in relative humidity.

If inadequate thicknesses of insulation areapplied to the ductwork, water can pool causingnot only equipment damage but poor equipmentperformance, and a potential corrosion risk.BS 5422 denes a minimum thickness forthe thermal insulation for pipes and ducts tominimize the danger of condensation.

Saint-Gobain Isover insulation products for metalductwork and glass wool ductboards have analuminium foil outer facing that acts as a vapourbarrier to prevent condensation occurring insidethe mineral wool itself.

Soluble ion content underASTM C 871 and EN 13468Immediately following manufacture, theleachable ion content of Saint-Gobain Isover glassmineral wool pipe insulation falls within theAcceptable Analysis area of the Acceptabilityof Insulation graph given in ASTM C795, whichrelates to ASTM C 871.

Saint-Gobain Isover Pipe Section achieves thehighest standard required of the tests ASTMC 871 and EN 13468.

The pH value of a product is measured inaqueous solution. The pH value for glass mineralwool is generally close to pH neutral or slightlyalkaline when in aqueous solution.

AcousticNoise (considered unwanted sound) wasdeclared an environmental pollutant atthe 1972 International Conference for theEnvironment, in Stockholm. Noise has a widerange of consequences for humans, from generaldisturbance, reducing personal comfort (such aslack of privacy or difculty in talking) and evenleading to serious health problems such asheart failure, hearing difculties, stress etc. Soit is important to consider sound reduction inHVAC design.

Designers should never forget that the primaryfunction of air conditioning installations is toimprove user comfort.

Metal ducts by themselves have virtuallyno acoustic absorption and sound is simplytransmitted down the length of the duct, sothe sound is of the same amplitude at thebeginning of the service duct as at the end.Sometimes noise attenuators can be used, however they also cause pressure losses andtherefore energy losses.

Insulation can also used to reduce the decibel levelto an acceptable standard for the human ear. Thiscan be in the form of an insulant such as: Isover CLIMCOVER Roll or Slab xed on the

outside of the duct. A pre-insulated ductwork system such as the

    Isover CLIMAVER range.

Fire ProtectionEuroclass harmonisationCommonly accepted in England, Scotland andWales, Euroclass is a harmonised Europeanclassication system (A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F) forproducts, measuring their reaction to re. A1corresponds to the safest situation, E the mostdangerous and F would not be classied.

Reaction to reUnder reaction to re, one of the mostimportant issues is the potential for ashover. This is the spontaneous ignition of hot smoke, gases and fuel which can lead to a respreading uncontrollably.

Other hazards found in real life res and for riskassessment, are classied by s and d. These relate

to the quantity of smoke production (s1 being thelowest production of smoke up to s3, which meanshigh production of smoke) and the possible fall ofaming droplets d (d0 none, up to d3).

Class 0 complianceClass 0 compliance refers to the surface propertiesof a product, specically Surface Spread of Flameor non-combustibility of the surface. BS 476: Parts6 and 7 also need to be satised.

All Isover HVAC products are Euroclass A/B ratedand Class 0 compliant. Please see individualproduct pages for further guidance.

Smoke and toxicity Carbon Monoxide is one of the primary toxicfumes released in all res and the majorityof all casualties whether fatalities or not, become incapacitated due to the inhalation

of this toxic fume.If a foil-faced product is directly exposed to aame, the foil will initially protect the underlyinginsulant. However, when a re reaches 550-700Cband, typically after 30 minutes, the aluminiumfoils normally melts away from the insulant below.Once this has occurred the insulant will be directlyaffected by the ame and some insulants canpotentially give off toxic gasses. This is not thecase for glass mineral wool.

Glass mineral wool passes the most stringentIMO Resolution MSC 61 (67); Annex 1, Part 2 testfor smoke and toxicity, which is used to regulatethe release not only of carbon monoxide but alsoother toxins such as hydrogen cyanide, sulphurdioxide and nitrous fumes.

In most res, it is the inhalation of toxic fumesthrough smoke that will kill occupants, not the reitself, so it is important to select the right insulant.

At Isover we take our environmentalresponsibility seriously. The very nature ofour business is to develop insulation solutionsto protect both your built environment andthe natural environment.

That is why we have developed our 3 point planfor environmental sustainability. This dynamicplan focuses our efforts on continuouslyimproving the way in which our products andprocesses impact the natural environment andseeks to ensure that Isover and our products, when in-situ, use:

We are proud of the successes we have alreadyachieved, such as being the only glass mineralwool manufacturer to achieve 86% recycledcontent (the absolute limit) and the 20%reduction we have made in factory energyconsumption, but we are committed toachieving far more.

Ozone Depletion Potential and GlobalWarming Potential

Glass mineral wools do not contain ozone-depleting or global warming substances, norare these used in their manufacture.

Isover products have a Zero Ozone DepletionPotential (ODP) and a Global Warming Potential(GWP) of less than 5.

Isovers Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)statement is also available upon request orfound at www.isover.co.uk .

Environmental Management SystemAll Saint Gobain Isover mineral wool products arecertied to ISO 14001:2004. These certicates arealso available upon request or found atwww.isover.co.uk .

BREEAM FrameworkThere is a move towards all buildings beingenvironmentally rated. Their whole design fromthe constituent elements is now being chosenbased on sustainability credentials. The mostcommon rating method today is under BREEAM.British Research Establishment EnvironmentalAssessment (BREEAM) is An environmentalperformance standard against which new, non-domestic buildings in the UK can be assessed, rated and certied.

BREEAM: Metal ducts themselves cannotbe credited under BREEAM but the insulants

used on them such as duct wraps and duct slabsand pre-insulated ductwork can. Insulation cancorrespond to a BRE Global Green Guide onlinegeneric specication for Health, Education,Commercial, Industrial, Retail & Domesticbuilding types and gain credits.

Two credits are available in Section Mat 04 -Insulation within the BREEAM document. Toachieve the rst credit for Embodied Energy, anInsulation Index of equal to or greater than 2must be achieved.

The second credit for Responsible Sourcing canbe claimed if the insulation product has greaterthan 50% recycled content and an EMS 14001Certicate for the Key Process they can be classedas recycled materials for the purposes of Table11-2 Mat 03 and as such are awarded Tier Level 6.

Therefore, when using Isovers glass mineralwool HVAC range both available credits can beclaimed due to our 86% recycled content andavailability of EMS 14001 certicates for theKey Process.

Environmental commitment During every stage of development, from productinnovation to the sourcing of raw materials, throughmanufacture, distribution and installation, we constantlyachieve improvements in our environmental sustainability.

Insulation of pipeworkIsover CLIMPIPE Section Alu2Designed to provide thermal and acoustic insulation of pipework, Isover CLIMPIPESections are strong, lightweight pre-formed snap on sections with a reinforcedaluminium foil facing and a self-adhesive overlap to help ensure a strongvapour barrier.

Manufactured in 1.2m lengths these sections offer the opportunity for fewer joints than traditional 1m length competitor products, helping to reduce thermalbridging. The consistent density and concentricity of Isover sections providesconsistent thermal performance along the length of the pipe.

Acoustic PerformanceNoise levels from pipework services can be greatly reduced with CLIMPIPE Sections Alu2.

In the example below the noise reduction in dB (A) for ve different cases is shown. The sound sourceis a 110mm sewage pipe made of PVC, with a waterow of 1.5 litres/sec. The sound level measured0.6 metres from the un-insulated pipe was = 56 dB (A). A plastic pipe should be insulated with 20 -30mm of mineral wool to achieve the same sound levels as that of a cast iron pipe.
