Dear Friend,

As we imagine the future of Community Voice Mail, we envision a community

lifeline - supporting individuals, social service agencies, and whole communities to

solve problems, ease suffering, and make the most of resources.

So many people count on Community Voice Mail to help them reconnect and

restore their lives. In their stories I see the extraordinary and transformational

impact that connection has on their sense of hope, and on their concrete prospects

for success. Their stories energize us to create new uses of Community Voice Mail

technology.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, thank you for your leadership, your

support, and your compassion for the people who rely on Community Voice Mail

as a vital lifeline. With your support, we can continue to advance together to reach

many thousands more. With your support, we can continue to make our vision real.

Sincerely,

Jennifer BrandonExecutive Director

Carolyn was working her dream job as an in-home day care provider when her

dream quickly disintegrated. She lost her job and soon after lost her home.

After a period of living out of her car and in a variety of area shelters, Carolyn

almost lost hope. her faith and community saved her. Among the services she

received was her Community Voice Mail number.

Determined to get her life back on track, Carolyn searched for jobs using her

Community Voice Mail number to complete housing and job applications as well as

manage doctors’ appointments and maintain contact with friends and family.

Carolyn’s hard work soon paid off. A year after becoming unemployed, she found a

job as a pre-school teacher and now has an apartment. She also volunteers her time

reading to children giving her an ideal way to give back to the community.

In the current economic environment, with national unemployment nearing 10%,

an increasing number of people who have never known life without a phone

are finding out just how isolating and damaging it can be to have no means of

communicating with the outside world.

Through the Community Voice Mail program, the Weingart Center Association,

a human services agency, distributes 1,750 voice mail accounts— a vital

communication tool— to homeless and low income individuals throughout los

Angeles County. Since its inception in 2001, the program has provided a direct link

to opportunities for more than 5,000 men and women in need.

The Weingart Center knows that having a job is critical to living self-sufficiently, and

working plays a major role in self-esteem. having a Community Voice Mail number

is critical for job seeking and landing a position.

Communities are rich with resources and information. The challenge is how to

connect to those resources at the right time and in the right way.

Working with thousands of phoneless people through a network of 140

participating Community Voice Mail agencies in houston, CVM Manager Scot

More has seen how something so basic to most of us has become a lynch pin

for houston’s response to homelessness. “Without a phone number you are

alone. you lack any kind of community.” Working with people who have become

homeless, Scot sees the role that connection to community plays in building lives

back from crisis. “Somehow, having a phone number restores people’s sense of

being an individual at the same time it makes them feel less alone.”
