    A Chronology of The Silmarillionhas to take into account the following

    stages of time that occur:

    The Time leading up to the creation of the two Trees Telperion andLaurelin and their regular waxing and waning in Aman. That mannerof reckoning, though, is available only to the Valar, who dwell in sight

    of them, and not to the dwellers on Middleearth, who cannot see theLights.

    The time of the Two Trees to the years of the !un and Moon

    begins the Count of Time on Middleearth, its firstrising being the first day of the first 8ear of the

    !un. ;ts 8ears are Kswifter and briefer than thelong 8ears of the Trees in ValinorK. En the day ofits first rising >ingolfin and his host march intoMithrim, saluting it with horns and banners.
