Washburn University School of Law ended its 3-year Centennial Celebration with a Black TieGala May 6, 2006, in Topeka, Kan.

Law school alumni were invited and those whoattended enjoyed an evening of great food, enter-tainment and the camaraderie of close friends andcolleagues. Ambassador Delano Lewis ’63, was thekeynote speaker for the evening.

The evening started with a reception and dinner.A short program followed dinner which includedremarks from Dr. Jerry Farley, President ofWashburn University; Duke Dupre, President of the Washburn University School of Law AlumniAssociation; Dennis Honabach, Dean of WashburnLaw and Ambassador Lewis. A video which high-lighted the future of the law school was also fea-tured during the program.

Duke Dupre and Dr. Juli Mazachek, President of Washburn Endowment Association, recognizeddonors who created endowed funds during the 3-year Centennial Celebration.

As a thank you forsupporting WashburnLaw, those whodonated at anendowed fund levelof $15,000 or abovewere recognized andreceived a commis-sioned one-of-kindbronze statue depict-ing Lady Justice.

The artistic rendering of the statue represents both genders in the pursuit of fair and equal administration of the law, without corruption,avarice, prejudice, or favor. Artist YolandavanderGaast designed these remarkable sculptures for MST Bronze Limited in Toronto,Canada

After the recognition ceremony, Dean Honabach addressed the crowd. He stated, “Wewant to thank these donors, and a l l of the donors who contributed to the CentennialFund. To date, your generosity has raised more than $5.1 million dollars since the startof the Centennial Celebration in July 2003. Many other supporters are preparing to con-tribute before the end of the fiscal year. This will put us on track to close out a verysuccessful Centennial Celebration.”

“ Your financial support of Wa s h b u rn Law makes it possible for the law school to notonly continue its commitment to academic excellence, but to be innovative in meetingthe needs of today and tomorrow’s contemporary law students,” said Honabach.

Ambassador Lewis wrapped up the evening program.

Immediately after law school Ambassador Lewis began his career in the federal govern-ment, first as an attorney with the Department of Justice and later with the U.S. EqualEmployment Opportunity Commission. He then became Associate Director of the U.S.Peace Corps in Nigeria and Country Director of the U.S. Peace Corps in Uganda. Hewas Legislative Assistant to Senator Edward W. Brook of Massachusetts and Chief ofS t a ff for Delegate Walter Fauntroy of the District of Columbia.

His career in the telecommunication industry began in 1973, ultimately ending with hisre t i rement in 1984 from Bell Atlantic as President and CEO of the company’s District ofColumbia operation. Later that same year he was asked to take the helm of NationalPublic Radio (NPR) in Washington, D.C., as President and CEO. After five years withNPR, Ambassador Lewis re t i red, continuing to serve on the Boards of Colgate PalmoliveCompany, Eastman Kodak, The Haliburton Co. and Black Entertainment Television.

In June 1999, President Clinton nominated Ambassador Lewis to be the United StatesAmbassador to The Republic of South Africa, and the Senate confirmed him thatN o v e m b e r, the same year the Topeka Capital-Journal named him Kansan of the Ye a r. InJuly 2001, Ambassador Lewis re t i red from diplomatic service. Currently, he is Pre s i d e n tand CEO of his communications consulting practice, Lewis & Associates, in Las Cruces.

Ambassador Lewis received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree in 2000 fro mWa s h b u rn Law and the Distinguished Service Award from the law school AlumniAssociation in 2003.

Ambassador Lewis spoke about his care e r, the future of law, and the future ofWa s h b u rn Law specifically. He spoke of the need for lawyers to stand up for what isright, to protect the integrity of mankind and to seize the future for the betterment of

all people. He encouraged legal professionals to be dili-gent in their efforts in the public, private and businesssectors. Lewis attended the event with his wife Gayle.

The law school would like to thank two alumni whos p o n s o red, with their firms, tables at the eveningevent; Stu Entz of Entz & Entz and Scott Logan ofLogan & Logan. Their support for the Gala and thelaw school is very much appre c i a t e d .

After the program, the evening continued with livemusic and dancing with the band Now and Then.
