PRELUDE “Now Thank We All Our God” Paul Manz

PROCESSIONAL HYMN “Now Thank We All Our God” LSB 895

INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: E Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 100 (A psalm for giving thanks)

Pastor: Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with

gladness! Come into His presence with singing! People: Know that the LORD, He is God! It is He who made us, and we are His;

we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

Pastor: Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name!

People: For the LORD is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.

Pastor: Almighty God, Your mercies are new every morning and You graciously provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge Your goodness, give thanks for Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience all our days; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who live and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: E Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our

sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Hebrews 10:22

Pastor: Our help is in the Name of the Lord, People: E who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8 Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, People: E And Thou forgave the iniquity of my sins. Psalm 32:5 Pastor: Lord God, People: we come to You today confessing that we are often unthankful for all

the gracious gifts You have given us. So often we worry unnecessarily about our future since it is in Your hands. Forgive our unthankfulness. For the sake of Jesus Christ, Your Son, forgive us, and fill us with the joy of Your presence and the promise of our eternal salvation.

Pastor: Through the mercy and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus, we have all gained access to His grace by which we now stand. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: E Amen.

HYMN STANZA LSB 814 v. 1-2 E O bless the Lord, my soul! Let all within me join

And aid my tongue to bless His name Whose favors are divine.

O bless the Lord, my soul, Nor let His mercies lie Forgotten in unthankfulness And without praises die!

THANKSGIVING FOR GOD’S CREATION OLD TESTAMENT Deuteronomy 8:1-10

(Give thanks to God for His gift of the land.)

1"The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the LORD swore to give to your fathers. 2And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. 5Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the LORD your God disciplines you. 6So you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, 8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. 10And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

HYMN STANZA LSB 814 v. 4-5

E He crowns thy life with love When ransomed from the grave; He that redeemed my soul from hell Hath sov’reign pow’r to save.

He fills the poor with good; He gives the suff’rers rest. The Lord hath judgments for the proud And justice for the_oppressed.

PSALM Psalm 104 and 145 (The psalmist reminds us that God made the earth and still supplies the bounty we enjoy.)

Pastor: Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great! Men: You set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. Women: You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills; they give drink to every beast of the field. Men: From Your lofty abode You water the mountains; the earth is satisfied

with the fruit of Your work.

Women: You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth.

Men: The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in due season. Women: You open Your hand; You satisfy the desire of every living thing. Pastor: O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom have You made them

all; the earth is full of Your creatures. ALL: May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works. Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord! PRAYER Pastor: Grant me, O Lord, to know what is worth knowing, People: to love what is worth loving, Pastor: to praise what delights you most, People: to value what is precious in your sight, Pastor: to hate what is offensive to you. People: Do not let me judge by what I see, Pastor: nor pass sentence according to what I hear, People: but to judge rightly between things that differ, Pastor: and above all to search out and to do what pleases you, through Jesus. People: Amen. - Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471) HYMN “For the Beauty of the Earth” LBW 561

THANKSGIVING FOR FREEDOM

EPISTLE 1 Timothy 2:1-4

(We give thanks for freedom, good government, and we pray for those in authority.)

1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

PSALM Psalm 85

(The psalmist prays for God's blessing upon the nation and for the people to trust in Him.)

Pastor: You forgave the iniquity of Your people; You covered all their sin. You withdrew all Your wrath; You turned from Your anger. People: Lord, You were favorable to Your land; You restored the fortunes of Jacob. Pastor: Will You be angry with us forever? Will You prolong Your anger to all generations? People: Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You? ALL: Show us Your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us Your salvation. Pastor: Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for He will speak peace to His people, to His saints; but let them not turn back to folly. People: Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness meet. Pastor: Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down

from the sky. People: Yes, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its

increase. Righteousness will go before Him and make His footsteps a way.

ALL: Lord, You were favorable to Your land; You restored the fortunes of Jacob. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as

it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

THANKSGIVING FOR SPIRITUAL BLESSING HOLY GOSPEL Luke 17:11-19

(Jesus gives healing to ten, but only one receives the gift with faith and knows its fullest blessing.)

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventeenth chapter. People:

11Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13and called out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" 14When he saw them, he said, "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed. 15One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" 19Then he said to him, "Rise and go; your faith has made you well." Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People:

HYMN STANZA LSB 814 v. 6 E His wondrous works and ways He made by Moses known, But sent the world His truth and grace By His belovèd Son.

PSALM Psalm 138 (The psalmist invites God's people to give thanks to the Lord for all His blessings.)

Pastor: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. People: I give You thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing

Your praise; Pastor: I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks to Your name for

Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness, for You have exalted above all things Your name and Your Word.

People: On the day I called, You answered me; my strength of soul You increased. Pastor: All the kings of the earth shall give You thanks, O Lord, for they have

heard the words of Your mouth, People: and they shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the

Lord. Pastor: For though the Lord is high, He regards the lowly, but the haughty He

knows from afar. People: Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You preserve my life; You

stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand delivers me.

Pastor: The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.

People: Do not forsake the work of Your hands. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was

in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. PRAYER Pastor: O God our Father, we ask you to bless those for whom there will be no

sleep tonight… those who this night will not sleep because of the pain or the distress of their mind;

People: those in misfortune, who will lie down in hunger and cold; Pastor: those who are far from home and far from friends, and who are lonely as

the shadows fall. People: Grant that in our own happiness and comfort we may never forget

the sorrow and the pain, the loneliness and the need of others in the slow, dark hours.

Pastor: This we ask for Your name’s sake. People: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Almighty God, You show Your love to us each day. You provide the

necessities of life for the evil as well as the good; You send the rain on the just and the unjust.

People: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. Pastor: We give You thanks, Lord, for giving us the greatest blessing that we

need—faith in Your Son, Jesus Christ, and what He has given to us in His cross and resurrection.

People: Give thanks to the God of gods. Pastor: We give You thanks for the many gifts with which You have blessed us in

this congregation. Help us to use them in service to You. People: Give thanks to the Lord of lords. Pastor: For all the blessings You give each day—food to eat, a place to sleep, clothes to wear, all that we need—we give You our thanks and praise. People: Give thanks to the God of heaven.

Pastor: Lord Jesus, Your forgiveness is so free to us. Freely have we received it; may we freely give it to those who have sinned against us. If there is someone on our hearts right now with whom we are having difficulties, give us grace to deal with them even as You would.

People: Oh, give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the people.

Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves, with thankfulness. People: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom

come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

OUR SENDING Pastor: May you be blessed forever, Lord, for not abandoning me when I abandoned you, People: for offering your hand of love in my darkest, most lonely moment, Pastor: for putting up with such a stubborn soul as mine, People: for loving me more than I love myself, Pastor: for continuing to pour out your blessings upon me, even though I respond so poorly, People: for drawing out goodness in even me, Pastor: for being constant and unchanging amidst all the changes of this world, People: for repaying our sin with your love. Pastor: May you be blessed forever, Lord, for repaying our sin with your love. People: Amen. - Teresa of Avila (c. 1515-1582)

BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you

and be gracious to you. The Lord lift his countenance upon you and give you peace.

POSTLUDE “Now Thank We All Our God” Sigfrid Karg-Alert

It is fitting and right to sing of you, to praise you, to thank you, to adore you in all places of your dominion. For

you are the ineffable God, inconceivable, invisible, incomprehensible, existing forever

and yet ever the same, you and your only-begotten Son and your Holy Spirit. You

brought us into being out of nothingness, and when we had fallen, you raised us up

again. You have not ceased doing everything to lead us to heaven and to bestow

upon us your future kingdom. For all this do we thank you and your only-begotten

Son and your Holy Spirit - for all the benefits of which we know and those of which

we are ignorant, for those that are manifest to us and those that lie concealed. We

thank you also for this sacrifice, which you are pleased to receive from our hands,

even though there stand before you thousands of archangels and myriads of angels,

Cherubim and Seraphim, six-winged and many-eyed, borne aloft on their wings who

sing, proclaim, cry out, and chant the triumphal hymn: Holy, holy, holy, Lord of

Hosts! Heaven and earth are filled with your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is

he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! ~St. John Chrysostom (347-407)
