Geography was incredibly important to ancient Egypt - especially the Nile River•All life revolved around this river•Boats were essential for everyone•(Word invented for those without boats)
•A “gentle” river•The Tigress and Euphrates often hurt Mesopotamians (flooding destroyed)•The Nile helped Egyptians (flooding watered fields)•Made Egypt a more optimistic civilization than Meso.
Geography
•Nile allowed huge territory to be ruled by one leader•Strong leadership needed to organize harvest after flooding
•Other geography important too•Big desert protected Egypt (more time to develop)
THE NILE METER
ANCIENT EGYPT
Countless Hollywood movies have used ancient Egypt as the backdrop for thrilling adventures Raiders of the Lost Ark Death on the Nile The Mummy Stargate
The images conjured up by Hollywood include towering pyramids, ancient mummies, and long-lost tombs containing unimaginable wealth and guarded by mysterious curses!!
WHO WERE THE EGYPTIANS?
The Egyptians were much more than Pharaohs, pyramids, elaborate burials, and mysterious curses.
They were a living, breathing society of people who experienced many of the same joys and sorrows we do today
We must be careful no to allow the grandeur of its monuments to overshadow the people and the society that produced such treasures
