160,000 visit in 2002 –over a million since

opening

A banner year! Over 360 eligible families participated inFamily Focus, a new program designed to helpparents understand the impact of early learn-ing and the value of the Museum experience. In addition to parenting education, familiesreceived a free Museum membership andtransportation subsidy to encourage regularvisits. Family Focus benefited more than 1,300adults and children referred through partner-ships with Easter Seals, Head Start, theMilwaukee American Indian ResourceNetwork, Penfield Children’s Center, and theSupporting Today’s Parents Consortium.

In January, ourdedicatedEducation,Exhibits andProgramsCommitteeunveiled In The

Yard, the final phase of Betty’s Busy Backyard – our areafor children ages three and under. Generously funded byMuseum friends Debra Altshul-Stark and Brian Stark, Inthe Yard features activities in a pretend Gardening Shed,Planting Patch, and Caterpillar Sandbox. In addition tothe Starks’ support, in-kind assistance from B&E GeneralContractors and KS Remodelers created a sensory-richenvironment in the Nursery Rhyme House. A premiereevent highlighted how the exhibit promotes early learningthrough play.

Learning how things work kept almost45,000 visitors hopping during BOING!, aspecial exhibit that explored the science –and fun – of springs. On loan from theChildren’s Discovery Museum of San Diego,BOING! helped children understand the con-cept of elasticity as they experimented withenergy and motion, sounds and vibrations, and recoiling and resilience. Local sponsorsincluded Exacto Spring Corporation,Northwestern Mutual Foundation, SCJohnson Fund, and the Milwaukee JournalSentinel.

The Museum’s Alice BertschyKadish Teacher of the YearAward – named for aMilwaukee teacher and belovedMuseum supporter who wasdevoted to excellence in earlychildhood education – is pre-sented annually to an earlychildhood educator and a K-3rd grade teacher who demon-strate a special commitment tohands-on learning. In 2002, we were honoredto announce that the Award received endorse-ments from both the National Association for theEducation of Young Children and the Wisconsinbranch of the National Educators Association.

In September, the Museum received a coveted grant from the Institute of Museum andLibrary Services, a federal agency that fosters leadership, innovation and a lifetime oflearning by supporting museums and libraries. The award recognizes the Museum“as one of the leaders of the field.” Grant recipients have the highest approval ratingof their peers and are considered among the very best in the nation.

The Friends Committee provided keyfundraising support, organizing both asuccessful membership solicitation andextraordinary special events. The GalaCommittee stole the show – a record449 guests attended the Novemberevent – Here’s Looking at You Kid! –raising $114,000 to support Museumoperations. The Friends Committee, inpartnership with an equally talentedMarketing Committee, also produced anew membership program and two spectacularfamily events, presented by Jewel-Osco, celebrat-ing Valentine’s Day and Halloween. In additionto raising critical funds, these efforts helped settwo new records: membership (2,718) and sin-gle-day attendance (2,310). Whew!

Thanks to support from Harley-DavidsonMotor Company, the Museum completedrenovations to RACEWAYS!, our ever-popu-lar exhibit that explores the science ofmotion, and developed a new companionexhibit, On A Roll! These exciting changesdebuted in February and the action hasn’tstopped since! Toddlers were delightedwith our new Ball Walkers, visitors of allages put their imaginations to work inMaking Tracks, and Track Contraption wasa “big hit” at over ten feet tall! The exhibitmade basic science fun for almost 52,000visitors.

Our Annual CampaignCabinet was undaunted by achallenging fundraising cli-mate, securing over $600,000from generous donorsthroughout the community.Their persistence paid off –enabling the Museum toadvance new exhibit projects, educational programs andoutreach services that will helpshape the future of all the chil-dren we serve.

Thousands of pretend lion-tamers, acrobats and clownsperformed in the center ringduring World Circus, a specialexhibit from the CanadianMuseum of Civilization. Amake-believe trapeze, tightropeand unicycle created under-the-big-top thrills, while costumes, props, and videos helped chil-dren appreciate the coopera-tion, skill and creativity it takesto be part of a circus troupe. Over 23,000 visitors enjoyed WorldCircus thanks to the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, with additionalsupport from Conley Publishing Group and Circus World Museum.
