A beautiful story, which will take just a few minutes of your time to read and change your way of
thinking.
Two men, both seriously ill, were together in the same hospital room.
One of the men was allowed to sit up every afternoon to clear his lungs.
His bed was next to the only window in the room. The other man beside
him had to lay down on his back the whole day.
The men talked for hours; about their wives, family, houses, work, the
time the spend in the army, the holidays, and so on . . . . .
The men talked for hours; about their wives, family, houses, work, the
time the spend in the army, the holidays, and so on . . . . .
Every afternoon when the man next to the window was allowed to sit up, he told his roommate what he saw outside through the window. The
man in the other bed got more and more anxious every day to hear the
colourfull stories.
The window looked out on a beautiful park with a pond. Ducks were swimming in the water and
children were playin with their toy-boats. Couples in love were
strolling; flowers with all colours of the rainbow were growing and in the background there was the skyline of
a big city.
When the man next to the window was talkning the other man on his
back was imagining in his mind everything he heard. On a warm sunny day the man next to the
window described a musicband, that was walking through the park
with a crowd of people behind them.
Allthough the man on his back could not hear the music, he could see the
music-band in his mind. Days and weeks went by. One morning when
the nurse came by to bath both men she found the dead body of the man
next to the window. He died peacefully in his sleep.
She was shocked and with another nurse the removed the dead man’s
body. After having accepted the death of his roommate the man on his back asked the nurse if he could be moved
to the bed next to the window. The nurse aggreed and after having
changed the beds and making sure everything was allright the nurse left
the man alone.
Slowly and with much pain the man on his back pushed himself up using his elbows to see the outsideworld
for himself.
Everything he saw was a blind wall.
The man called the nurse and asked her if she knew why his roommate
used to tell him things that were not there. The nurse answered that the diseased could not have seen the
blind wall, for he has been blind for many years. She said: “Maybe he only wanted to give you courage.”
What does this story tell?It is so joyfull to make someone else happy in spite of your own difficult situation. To share pain
enlightens you, but to share happiness is much more satisfying. If you want to feel rich, realise the things you have that can not be
paid for.
