A basic list of 133 book and journal titles in dentistry is presented. Thelist is intended as a bibliographic selection tool for those libraries andhealth institutions that support clinical dentistry programs and servicesin the nondental school environment in the United States and Canada. The book and journal titles were selected by the membership of theDental Section of the Medical Library Association (MLA). The DentalSection membership represents dental and other health scienceslibraries and dental research institutions from the United States andCanada, as well as from other countries. The list was compiled andedited by the Ad Hoc Publications Committee of the Dental Section ofMLA. The final list was reviewed and subsequently was approved forpublication and distribution by the Dental Section of MLA during thesection's 1996 annual meeting in Kansas City, Missouri.

This list of 133 dental titles is intended as a biblio-graphic selection tool in support of clinical dentistryin the nondental school library in the United States orCanada. There are approximately 300 nondentalschools or locations in the United States with accred-ited advanced dental education programs located in

hospitals, Veterans Affairs medical centers, researchcenters, and other health care facilities [1]. At the pres-ent time the American Dental Association recognizeseight dental specialties: dental public health, endodon-tics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral pathology, or-thodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, and pros-thodontics [2]. Most nondental school sites provide li-brary services and resources for their professionalstaff, which may include dentists, oral surgeons, andstudents in advanced or post-doctoral dental specialtyeducation programs as well as dental hygienists andother dental auxiliaries. mended Books and Journals" was developed to sup-port the information needs of these clinical dentistrypersonnel in the nondental school environment. The dental practitioner is expected to continue life-

long learning. This precept was underscored by theCommittee on the Future of Dental Education of theInstitute of Medicine (IOM), which identified it as"[o]ne of the guiding principles ... that learning is alifelong enterprise for dental practitioners. It cannot stopwith the awarding of a degree or the completion of a resi-dency program. Continuing dental education is a partof the continuum of education... ." [3] In the pursuitof lifelong learning, oral health care professionals mayuse one or more of the standard editions of dentaltextbooks, as well as published clinical and researcharticles found in reputable dental journals, to maintaina basic foundation of knowledge. The oral health careprofessional should be assured access to a core collec-tion of book and journal titles in a nondental schoollibrary for support of research efforts, patient care, andeducation. This list of recommended titles provides thebibliographic foundation for this core collection. Theoral health care professional should also be assuredaccess to MEDLINE and other MEDLARS databases, and should be provided with reasonable access to tele-communications gateways such as the Internet, includ-ing the World Wide Web, in the library or a compa-rable environment [4].A longer list of book and journal titles was initially

drafted by the Medical Library Association (MLA)Dental Section Ad Hoc Publications Committee in 1994.Various versions of the draft list were circulated to theDental Section membership for review and commentbetween 1995 and 1996. When appropriate, Dental Sec-tion members shared copies of the draft list with oralhealth care practitioners and dental school faculty fortheir comments. A draft list was also distributed elec-tronically in 1995 to members of the Dental Section'se-mail discussion group, DENTALIB, for their reviewand comments. DENTALIB subscribers include librar-ians, dental educators, and oral health care practition-ers from institutions around the world. All sugges-tions and comments received were reviewed by the AdHoc Publications Committee, and revisions to the listwere made accordingly. The final list of ninety-threebook and forty journal titles was approved for generaldistribution by the Dental Section at its 1996 annualmeeting.

This list is by no means definitive or comprehensive, and represents only a small percentage of the availableinformation in dentistry and oral health titles pub-lished in the last ten years. All recommended bookand journal titles are, as of 1996, currently availablefrom the publisher and have been recognized by theMLA Dental Section as providing up-to-date, author-itative, and factual information for the clinician. Out-of-print titles were excluded from the list, as were titles

issued in formats other than printed text, such asCD-ROM, mixed media, and multimedia (laser disc, audiovisual cassettes, slides, etc.). Also excluded fromthis list is the growing body of resources in electronicformats, including full-text copy, which are accessiblethrough various telecommunications gateways.Recommended book titles are grouped alphabeti-

cally by authors' last names under twenty-nine broadsubjects, while journals are arranged alphabetically bytitle without subject categorization. Each title on the"Basic List" is recommended for purchase by the non-dental school library. Titles marked with an asterisk(*) are recommended for first or priority purchase. These indicated titles have been identified by the MLADental Section as representing important contributionsto the study and research in clinical dentistry. Thebook list includes the price of the book in U.S. dollarsas of 1996. The international standard number (ISBNfor books and ISSN for journals) has been providedfor each title to aid in the electronic searching of onlinecatalogs and the ordering of titles. This list will beupdated every two years by the MLA Dental Section.
