The “Blooming Hayle” Jubilee Celebration was organised by Hayle in Bloom’s members. Organising committee: Margaret Tanner (chair), Anne-Marie Rance, Bob Mims, John Bennett, Ray Wyse and Clive Polkinghorne.

Hayle in Bloom was formed in January 2000 with the aim to enter the Britain in Bloom competitions and to enhance and beautify the town. For the last six years in a row Hayle has been awarded Gold in the Britain in Bloom South West competition and won the Cup for Best in Class in four of those years.

The Jubilee accounts herein were written by John Pollard, with research by Kath Mullinger, Eileen Palmer, John Pollard and the Hayle Archive. The Archive has produced a booklet, Jubilee Celebrations in Hayle 1887-2002 (available from the Archive).

Mayor’s Welcome

On behalf of the town of Hayle, I extend to everyone a very warm welcome to our Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee celebration. Hayle

has a proud history of celebrating major occasions and we are continuing that tradition today with Hayle in Bloom’s Jubilee event.

This is a good time for Hayle, with rejuvenation in sight. Much is happening in our historic harbour and throughout the town, and we look forward to enhancing and developing much more of our World Heritage Site. Perhaps the next Jubilee celebration will look back and see this as Hayle’s turning point?

Thank you to everyone from the town for joining in – and to all our visitors from near and far. A special thank-you goes to those businesses and organisations who have sponsored today’s event – we so appreciate your support to enable the celebration to take place.

And what would a town be without its community groups? We have so many that work hard to make Hayle a great place to live. Thank you all for joining in to make the event a huge success.

Finally, Hayle in Bloom, which conceived and organised “Blooming Hayle,” and longtime head gardener Mike Kemp do a brilliant job every year in making our town look beautiful and deserve a huge vote of thanks. Congratulations to everyone for making our Jubilee party happen.

Victoria had come to the throne in 1837 on the death of her uncle, William IV.

Her father was the fourth son of George III, and although she was the last monarch of the House of Hanover, her marriage to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha established a new dynasty.

Victoria acceded to the throne on 20 June 1837, but we can find no record of a celebration of her Silver Jubilee in 1862, presumably because she was still in mourning for the death of her beloved Albert only six months earlier.

It was very different in 1887, when the country and indeed the Empire celebrated her 50 years as Queen. On the anniversary there was a banquet to which 50 kings and princes were invited, and the next day a procession through the streets led to a thanksgiving service in Westminster Abbey.

Hayle celebrated in some style with an organising committee divided into relevant sections to cover the day’s events. One month before the Jubilee they reported that £110* had been collected or promised, with about £40 more being required. According to the local paper: ‘Her Majesty’s liege subjects in this little faraway town will celebrate her jubilee reign right loyally and worthily.’**

On the Sunday the Jubilee was the focus of worship through out the town. Reference is made to all 10 local churches’ participation in the events. At the Parish church (Phillack) the Rector gave a Jubilee sermon, while at Copperhouse Chapel the Rev Graves described incidents on the life of the Queen, ‘showing her faithfulness to the Constitution, her devotion to God and her motherly affection for her poorer subjects.’

On the day, arches festooned with flags and mottoes were constructed over the road

The Cornish Telegraph of 23 June 1887 stated: ‘The whole arrangements were most admirably carried out. Capt Rosewarne and Messrs Mudge & J Chellew of the Procession Committee. Mr Z Mudge and Mr H Hosken of the Decoration group. Mr Eustice and Mr Smith of the Dinner-to-the-Poor Committee. Rev Horsburgh, Messrs Broach, Hambly, Pool, Collings, Oliver and Whear of the School Committee were particularly energetic.’

*The relative value of £1 in 1887 would be about £86.70 today.

at Foundry, Commercial Road (near Mount Pleasant), Copperhouse and Penmare. Flags were stretched from house to house and across the street. The first event was the arrival of the G Company Rifles under the command of Capt. Rosewarne. A feu de joie was fired with the band playing the National Anthem after each discharge.

At about 1 o’clock the schoolchildren assembled at Copperhouse along with two Companies of Volunteers, the Hayle Lifeboat and crew, and Forresters and Rechabites. Six bands were engaged to accompany the procession. After the singing of the National Anthem they set off for Foundry, in all some 2,500 marchers. At Foundry they crowded together, again sang the National Anthem and made their way to the Towans, where tea and buns were served to the different schools. Several verses of the National Anthem were printed on the tea tickets!

‘The Artillery Battery and the G Company Rifles were on a plateau and the 11 Sunday schools were grouped in rows whilst on the hillocks all round were a sight such as the people of Hayle perhaps have never seen before. The weather was splendid, a fresh breeze filling the gorgeous banners and blowing out the flags.’

A dinner was held in a marquee, feeding 250 of the poor, with a further 60 meals taken to those who could not attend.

There had been a request that if beacons were to be lit then Trencrom should not be forgotten. In the event there were fires

on Clifton Terrace and at Bellevue and an imposing one at Trencrom. Some youngsters, keen to rival that at Carn Brae, set fire to the brushwood, and shortly the whole Crom was encircled in fire – reported as ‘a grand sight and the rapidity with which the fire spread gave an idea of the prairies and forest fires of America.’

Viewed from Hayle the sight was a brilliant one and from the Towans the beacon at Carn Brae could also be seen. There was disappointment because the planned fireworks had not arrived in time, but ‘large numbers lingered in the streets till a late hour to view this [beacon] and other illuminations and fires.’

In September 1896 Victoria became the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing her grandfather George III.The Queen requested that any celebrations should be delayed until the following June to

coincide with her Diamond Jubilee, which was made a festival of the British Empire. The prime ministers of all the self-governing dominions were invited to London, and the Jubilee procession included troops from all over the Empire. The parade paused for an open-air service of thanksgiving outside St Paul’s Cathedral throughout which Victoria sat in her open carriage. After the years of seclusion and mourning Victoria had regained popularity at her Golden Jubilee and this was further enhanced by outpourings of affection during the Diamond celebrations.

The weather on Jubilee Day in Hayle was described in the Cornishman as ‘gloomy and threatening but continued fine with occasional glimpses of sunshine.’ There was an organising committtee and again activities focused on a parade of schoolchildren with bands and rifle and artillery volunteers.

The main committee met the week before at the Passmore Edwards Institute with Mr Tredinnick presiding. Mr Porter, described as ‘secretary of the demonstration committtee,’ explained their plans and Mr Broach, secretary of the finance committee, reported that £48 had been collected so far and a cheque for 10 Guineas had been received from the MP, Mr A Strauss.

The main houses and businesses in Foundry and Copperhouse were festooned but decorations were said to be ‘not of a very lavish scale’!

At 10.30am soldiers and bands marched to the Towans for a feu de joie and singing of the national anthem (as in 1887). Dinner was provided for the participants and the officers received luncheon at Mr Taylor’s refreshment rooms.

At 1.30pm a procession of all Sunday schools – except, for some reason, St Elwyn’s – formed up in Foundry Square. They sang the national anthem and some 2,000 walked to Copperhouse, thence to Phillack and the Towans. A free tea was provided at Mr Taylor’s picnic grounds, and sports for old and young were provided, witnessed by thousands of spectators.

Charles Trevithick, chairman of the Jubilee Commemoration Committee, sent the following telegram to the Queen on 21 June 1897: ‘The inhabitants of Hayle respectfully and loyally congratulate your most gracious Majesty on the completion of the sixty years of your Majesty’s beneficent reign.’

In the afternoon while the procession waited in Foundry Square, another wire was sent: ‘Heartiest congratulations on this eventful day from 1,700 school-children assembled in Hayle, Cornwall.’

(Left) The Cornubia Biscuit Co., based in Foundry Square, produced its special biscuit for the occasion. On Jubilee Day, while the procession gathered, nearly 2,000 packets of the Victoria Jubilee biscuits were distributed to the children in the square by Messrs Hosken, Trevithick and Polkinghorne & Co. Ltd. – HTP.

“Great events make me quiet and calm; it is only trifles that irritate my nerves.

– Queen Victoria

At 10pm a salute of 21 signal rockets was fired followed by fireworks finishing with a ‘capital portrait of the Queen.’

One project associated with the Jubilee was building a new approach road to the Towans. Various negotiations with Canon Hocking and Harvey & Co resulted in money being raised for the road ‘from the gate leading to the Towans at Riviere Farm to the rear of the houses near the beach and that a junction be made between Clifton Terrace and the farm to connect with this road.’ This was described by the Committtee as ‘ the means of developing one of the most beautiful spots to be found in the Cornish coast.’

The day of Monday, 6 May 1935, was to be a family celebration across the Empire.

Many countries sent messages of respect, especially for George’s perceived efforts in the cause of international peace. On the evening of Jubilee Day, in a broadcast to the Empire, the King rededicated himself to the service of his subjects. On 9 May, the Royal Family gathered in Westminster Hall for loyal addresses from both Houses of Parliament.

In Hayle, Jubilee Day followed what had become a traditional format of celebrations. There was a march of schoolchildren – every child carrying a Union Jack, religious services and tea and sports.

At Phillack the church bells rang out at 8.30am and at St Elwyn’s a thanksgiving Mass was celebrated by Reverend Andrews. At the War Memorial there was a general thanksgiving service attended by the ministers of the town. The procession gathered at the Recreation Ground in the afternoon and, headed by Hayle Town Band, marched to Foundry Square and then on to the Towans, just as in 1887 and 1897. At the Towans each child received a mug and a bun and the band was given tea.

In the evening there was sports for the children and an open-air dance. As dusk fell

several bonfires were lit at Undercliff (later the Memorial Walk), and apparently the reflection of the flames in the water in the Pool provided a very pretty sight.

The day ended with a dance in the Drill Hall with music provided by a St Ives band – the Rhythmothians.

At Angarrack, about 70 children received mugs and buns and paraded through the village, passing under a decorated arch. In a field belonging to a Mr William Rae, there were sports including tug-of-war for both men and women, as well as refreshments and dancing to a gramophone. The all-male organising committee included Messrs S Sullivan, T Penrose, E Miles, G Williams and T Lawrence.

The cover of the Commemorative Programme of 1977 (left) that detailed events taking place at the Recreation Ground, which lasted from 10am until dark. The Hayle Town Jubilee Committee consisted of Rev Bryan Ashberry as chairman, Bill Mason as secretary, and Dorothy Coombe as treasurer. The programme cover was designed by Brian Pascoe. One photograph in the Cornishman for 6 June 1977 showed the fancy dress parade in Hayle, won by 4-year-old Jonny Coad and featured Shirley Hayes dressed as Queen Elizabeth I.

The Queen toured the country, visiting 35 counties, was addressed by both Houses

of Parliament, and lit the first of a chain of beacons. She travelled to a service at St Paul’s in the Gold State Coach. A flotilla of barges brought her down the Thames where she opened the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank and watched fireworks.

At a lunch at the Guildhall she stated: ‘My Lord Mayor, when I was twenty-one, I pledged my life to the service of our people and asked for God’s help to make good that vow. Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgement, I do not regret nor retract one word of it.’

‘Hayle Mug Mystery’

This was the headline in the Cornishman of 16 June 1977. The commemorative mugs

distributed to the children at the Jubilee celebrations should have been inscribed: Presented by the Town of Hayle. In fact the wording was: Presented by the Hayle Parish Council.

The producers of the mugs, Five Towns Pottery in St Ives, explained in a letter to the chairman of the organising committee that someone with an authoritive voice

had telephoned in February changing the inscription.

Gerry Steed, the owner of the pottery, said, ‘I had been contacted by so many people from Hayle that I really did not know who was who.’

The committee explained that the mugs had been paid for by money raised from the public and Hayle organisations and businesses, not the Council. The chairman, Reverend Ashberry, said, ‘We do not know who ordered the change or why.’

The Hayle Committee ordered mugs for the younger children and Jubilee crowns

for those over 11. Both Penpol and Bodriggy schools held their own celebrations, as did the village of Angarrack.

In Hayle, the celebrations centred on the Recreation Ground with three segments. Before midday the under-11s enjoyed Punch and Judy, races and the presentation of mugs. The afternoon was dedicated to youngsters over 11 but still at school. There was an obstacle course organised by Trevor Johns and the Rotary Club, a judo display and a March Past, redolent of previous Jubilees,

when young people and youth organisations from the Town processed in front of the Mayor, Mrs Eileen Kewell. Jubilee crowns were distributed. The Cornishman stated: ‘Every service club of the town was working somewhere along the line to help smooth out the day’s organisation.’

In the evening there was a disco at the town youth club while the rest of the community enjoyed a concert by the Hayle Town Band and a barbecue on the Recreation Ground. A coach was laid on to collect people from around the town to bring them to the concert and back home afterwards.

In Angarrack, a day of festivities was based on the pub car park and the Mill Field, with a children’s tea and later one for the adults. The contribution of Marjorie Prisk must be noted: she baked cakes for the tea, made red, white and blue rosettes for all, created the crowns that decorated the tea tables and produced bunting that covered the village.

The organising committee, chaired by Sidney Perry, raised £270 for the celebration activities. The day was officially opened by the village’s oldest resident, 85-year-old Miss Hilda Harris. The paper stated that ‘the Jubilee had started something in community spirit which will be carried on in the future.’

Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II: 2002

National events followed the usual format. The long weekend of the 1st to

the 4th saw two concerts in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, a chain of beacons across the country, a procession and service at St

Paul’s, and a parade illustrating British life during the Queen’s reign. And there was a fly-by of every type of RAF craft in service plus the Concorde and the Red Arrows.

On the Monday the Queen also launched the Music Live Festival in which more than

200 towns across the UK played the Beatles song All You Need is Love. One of the centres televised was Folly Field, in Marazion, where music was played throughout the day.

The focus of Hayle’s celebrations was a Fun Day on the Recreation Ground, which began with the raising of the Union Jack and the singing of the National Anthem. The day was coordinated by the Hayle Lions Club, chaired by Dave Girling, and the Town Forum, led by Shirley Oliver. The event was opened by Mayor David Barratt, who along with his Deputy, Marjorie Roberts, raised £3,000 to create improved floral displays throughout the town for the summer.

The weather at the start of the Fun Day had been poor, but by the afternoon the sun was shining and hundreds of people turned out. The first event was the mass singing of All You Need is Love. The West Cornwall Concert Band played, Hayle Surf Life Saving Club and Hayle Judokwai gave

demonstrations, and of course there was a tug-of-war.

Organisations manned stalls and sideshows. Jeff Turk and Dick Horwell of the Decorative Lights Committee had strung bunting in Copperhouse and Union Jacks throughout the town. The Mayor organised a competition to design greetings cards for the Golden Jubilee. It was judged by artist John Miller. All schools took part and the winners were Jean McKay (over 18’s), Katie Kavanagh, Louis Stevens, Sam Little and Oscar Gratta. The five designs were made into cards and signed by people of the town and sent to the Queen. Age group categories were won by Haydn Johns, Emma Lancaster, Cathy Warren and Morvah George.

Commemorative coins were presented to junior school children at a later date. New seating and hanging baskets were part of the improvements in Isis Gardens (under the viaduct) with part of the area newly designated as a Jubilee Garden. Angarrack celebrated with children’s sports, mugs and a tea and an impressive finale with fireworks made up of 50 rocket displays.

(Above) The June 2002 edition of The Hayle Pump (No. 46) held a competition for readers to translate into English the Cornish Jubilee message printed on the cover.
