Grace and peace,

Join us on these Sundays

Come Worship Him!

Sunday, June 3Sunday, July 1

Sunday, August 5

Have you ever needed a vacation from a vacation? Often it seems we are thrown into summer, stumbling from the intensity of May celebrations and culminations; finishing the school year, job assignments; unfurling from the chill of winter and the restrictions of routine. Summer is hoped to be a time of relaxation, enjoyment, and maybe even a time when the “livin’ is easy.” Yet, do we find it to be true? What if we began this season of the calendar year with a purpose? A purposeful summer where we explore practices that bring true renewal and deep restoration. Practices to enrich, encourage, and embolden our lives of faith, no matter the season. In June, we will begin a series on renewal. I pray that it may be a time when we are refreshed by the grace, love, and hope of Almighty God.In this edition you will find an encouraging update on the Legacy Society. I want to thank Joe Currie, Anita Emery, Lynn Gardam, Mary Margaret McNeill and Kathy McPherson, who teamed up to lead this annual effort. I also want to thank those who are charter members of the Legacy Society. As you can see, we have had a great response and I hope you will consider joining. The longer I am here, the more thankful I am for the generosity of faithful generations to this church. Finally, Rise against Hunger is coming up on June 3. I want to encourage everyone to participate in this great initiative as we seek to be Christ’s witnesses both locally and globally. Can you see that the Spirit is moving here at Brownson? I hope you can see it and feel it! I hope that the Spirit will move you to continue to join in and be supportive of where God is leading your church!I am so thankful for this gifted and growing community.

Psalm 23:3

“He restores my soul”

On Sunday, September 9, join us for the Coming Home picnic following the 11:10 AM service. We will greet long-time friends and meet new ones. Past picnics have been very successful, so we’re bringing back the same caterer and musicians. There will be a bounce house for kids, great food and of course fellowship! Please invite a friend - you can pick up a Complimentary Ticket for them when you purchase yours.Tickets will be available at the Information Center beginning in August—$10/person. Children age 7 and under are free, but still need a ticket to get in. Purchase tickets on Sundays or come to the church office on Monday–Thursday (9–4) and Friday (9–12).

SUMMER2018 Small Group Offerings

Current Events Class

The Current Events class will continue to meet this summer on Sundays at 10:00 AM in the Parlor. This class reflects on and discusses our Christian response to events of the week. Using local and national newspapers, they share concerns, offer positive responses and pray together. There is no set curriculum and new members are welcome!

Theology on TapOn Wednesday’s from 5:30-7 PM at The Sly Fox, the men of the church are invited to par-ticipate in Theology on Tap. This summer, the group is participating in a 14-week study on the book of Revelations. Study guides are available by contacting Gerald Ostlund: [email protected] or by placing an order on amazon.com. This group will take a break in June and July.

This summer, an open Bible Study where all are welcome will be offered on Sunday morn-ings at 10:00 AM in Conference Center, Room C. The adult summer Bible study, titled “Old Path, New Treasure,” will be led by Robert Allen, a retired pastor and long-time attendee of Brownson Church.June StudyTHE REST OF THE STORY• The Real Prodigal Son• Who wrote John?• How many Disciples?• Jesus’ Siblings

Throughout the summer, join the “All Are Welcome” Bible study on Thursdays at noon to study The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. Led by Susie Boals and Suellen Nesbit, the class will meet on the second floor of the Cornerstone Building in the Church Library. The Case for Christ, first published in 1998, examines the evidence for the claims of Jesus Christ, from the perspective of a skeptic who became a believer. If you wish to participate, please purchase a copy of the book to bring to the first class on June 7. It is widely available and can be ordered from The Country Book Store in Southern Pines, christianbooks.com or on amazon.com. Bring a bag lunch and a friend and make plans to join us!

Congregational Care

The Monroe twins spent the afternoon with George Thonet and Nell Winnie when they visited Penick Village with their mom, Ginger Monroe.

Visitation Ministery

Brownson’s Card Ministry, led by Joyce White, sends cards to those who are having birthdays and are90 years old and above, along with anniversary cards to those celebrating anniversaries 50 years and be-yond. In June, 31 cards will be sent to members who are celebrating!

Being a Stephen Minister has helped me grow as a Christian. It has also changed me from being a strictly results-oriented person to more of a process-oriented caregiver.

Cathy Coats Harpster

Fun Fact:

Caring M M2

A comment from her care receiver, “Please come back.”Brenda Hiscott

Did you know that Brownson Church has been involved with Stephen Ministries since 1984? That’s thirty-four years of providing care member-to-member in our congregation! Today, Brownson has twenty-seven members serving as Stephen Ministers. Twenty-five of these are currently matched with persons grateful to have a Christian friend to regular-ly listen, care and pray for them as go through a challenging season of life. Their weekly vis-its help build trust and strengthen these con-fidential relationships. Caring member-to-member is one way you can respond to God’s call to serve and is a vital extension of our mission in this community. Brownson partners with other Stephen Min-istry congregations in our area to broaden the reach of each ministry by providing shared educational experiences and cross matching when needed. Stephen Ministry relationships extend the care our congregation provides well beyond the capacity of pastors and staff. If you are experiencing a difficult “season” of life such as a major transition, loss or crisis, one of the best gifts you can give yourself is to receive the care of a Stephen Minister.

A Card Ministry

I witnessed the power of Stephen Ministry several years ago with my care receiver. Because of PTSD, she was hesitant to go to the altar for Eucharist during Sunday worship services at Duke Chapel. With God’s amazing grace, she overcame that limitation and indeed walked bravely forward to receive the Eucharist one Sunday -- the first of many. Tears rolled down my cheeks and my heart sang for joy. Judie Henry

I didn’t understand why God so heavily put on my heart to be a Stephen Minister until I began meeting with my care receiver. We have shared many hours of laughter, tears and open conversa-tion. I pray that our time together has been, and will continue to be, a comfort and blessing to her since it has certainly been a blessing for me! Now, I understand God’s plan more clearly ... “For it is in giving, that we receive…”

Mary Foster

It has been my experience so far, and I am new to Stephen Ministry, that the value of the Stephen Min-ister is to provide a positive means for unburdening the care receiver to the point where they feel com-fortable and sufficiently confident to take action with their issues.

Don Dowd

Stephen Ministry is Christian centered. We use our taught skills of reflective listening, but we rely on God to guide the direction for our Care Receivers.

Fine china, crystal and silver adorned the table on May 10 to showappreciation to the teachers of The Brownson Learning Center. The effortsof these special teachers have made the first year of BLC’s operation aresounding success. PW was honored to host the luncheon and meet suchenthusiastic and enterprising instructors. Many hands prepared and served the food for the luncheon, but Priscilla McLeod and Deryle Carr outdid themselves with the decorations.

COLOR WARS

Youth group ended with a splash at the End of the Year Party on the lake.

The youth participated in a “Color Party” which involved team building games and lots of colorful fun. For Youth Sunday, the high school youth group led worship in song, prayer and in preaching. They encouraged the congregation to follow where the Holy Spirit led, and ended the service with a heart felt rendition of “Lean on Me.” The middle school participated in the choir and ushered that day.

Brownson Kids Music finished up the year with a party on the lawn. They had a water balloon toss, played musical chairs and broke open a piñata! Many thanks to all of the leaders and parents who made this program a huge success!

Our first annual BLC Bike-A-Thon was a ton of fun and a huge success! Our Learning Center students pedaled their hearts out to help raise funds for the playground! We plan on adding more riding toys, a “parking garage” for our ride-on toys and a building block area. We raised over $2,000! Thank you to our church families who contributed to this fundraiser!

Stop Hunger Initiative - June 1, 2018

Coalition Pack the Pickup

Sunday June 3 following the 11:10 service, Brownson is teaming up with Rise Against Hunger for the 8th time, aiming to top 160,000 meals packaged since first partnering with the organization. At just 29 cents per meal, 80% of all Rise Against Hunger meals are distributed through global partners that administer school feeding programs, orphanages, health clinics, vocational training and a growing focus on the education and empowerment of women. In an effort to grow our impact around the world, Brownson has increased our goal to 25,000 meals this year (up from 20,000 in 2017). The Meal Ministry Team will provide a light lunch in the Conference Center before we get started. This is an intergener-ational event and a great way to involve the whole family! (For those with children under the age of 4, childcare will be provided). Here’s how to register!Go to Brownson’s website: www.brownsonchurch.org/registration. We also invite you to consider making a donation to this worthwhile project! Your donation of $5, $10, $25 or more will help us meet our new goal of 25,000 meals! Go to brownsonchurch.org/registration to give a gift of any amount. Together, we can help Rise Against Hunger in their mission to rid the world of hunger by the year 2030. Thank you for your support!

For 300,000 children in the Food Bank’s 34-county service area, summer break is not just about missing school, it’s about losing access to free to reduced-cost meals through public schools. Families living in food insecurity rely on these meals during the week to ensure their children are getting the proper nutrition to grow and learn. Your support of the Stop Summer Hunger initiative helps to stabilize households and lessen the burden on already tight budgets by providing nutritious meals to families in need. Visit Honeybaked Ham on June 1 to support our Stop Summer Hunger initiative and help us achieve our goal of providing 3.3 million meals to children in need this summer.June 1 • 7 AM - 6 PMHoneybaked Ham11088 North US Hwy 15 #921, Aberdeen, NC 28315

In May, ten Brownson members served at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina in a food packing event. 36 boxes of food, along with 36 insulated bags of fresh produce were packed to be delivered to Moore Avenue Elementary School in Hamlet. A high percentage of children at Moore Avenue Elementary need food to carry them and their families through the weekend when they don’t have access to their school lunch program. Brownson will resume this service project in September when the school year begins.

Are you looking for ways to make a real difference in our community? Brownson is one of the origi-nal host congregations when Family Promise began more than 17 years ago. In 2017, Brownson mem-bers provided 232 meals for 13 families including 37 children.Try something new by providing a meal (a great thing to do with a friend or two), bring a buddy and spend a couple hours with the children, or spend the night at the Family Promise house in Aberdeen. If you are looking for a new way to serve, new volunteers are needed to join in this fun and fulfilling mission project. Our next week to host is July 2-5.For questions or to sign up, contact Susan Bellew ([email protected]) or Beth Pryor ([email protected]).

Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina

MISSIONSBrownson members, friends and family served to help Pack the Pickup for the Sandhills Coalition for Human Care. They helped fill the empty shelves of the food pantry and made a difference for those who are hungry in our area.
