for the year (6 issues)

After months of asking readers to bark the vote and lots of sneak peaks

at early results (I couldn’t help myself ), the Top Dog Readers Choice winners have been chosen and now you can see for yourself in this issue! Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for and support their favorite businesses. This contest, along

with the magazine, would not exist without your support and I truly appreciate it. While putting this new issue together, I remembered that last year’s Top Dog cover was graced by a rather anxious but handsome foster dog named Bodhi. Bodhi (named Bobo at the time) arrived on my doorstep last winter, as so many foster dogs had before him. He was quite terrified of strangers and seemed to only take comfort in other dogs. I was the exception as he did bond to me quickly but he was never at ease with the traffic both inside and outside my house. Over the last year, while I was looking for a home that would be a good fit, this nervous boy began to blossom into an amazing dog who had become much less fearful of strangers. I began to realize that he had quietly charmed his way into my life and at the year mark of fostering him, I knew that I would likely never be able to send him to another family. Bohdi has come a long way and it has been a privilege to watch him change from an insecure, fearful dog, into a happy, playful and (mostly) well behaved one. I’m so proud of him and am happy to share with you that I recently made it official; Bodhi is now my dog...and he is loved.

Please enjoy our Top Dog issue and don’t forget to tell your favorite winners that you voted for them! Have a wonderful summer. Stephanie Georgia editor/publisher

Congratulations to The Providence Animal Rescue League: A New Dog Adoption Center Is On It’s Way!The Providence Animal Rescue League (PARL) is pleased to announce that they are “breaking ground” on a new Dog Adoption Center thanks to an $80,000 grant from the Champlain Foundation and a $25,000 grant from the Rhode Island Foundation. The current dog kennels were built in the 1970’s and over the decades there have been many repairs and minor upgrades. PARL staff has done their best to make these kennels work well for the dogs but it is time to envision and build something new.“We will be creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for dogs awaiting adoption and shelter visitors alike.” says Executive Director, Carmine DiCenso. “It will be designed to reflect the modern standards and practices of animal welfare and more importantly, will maximize the dogs health and psychological well-being”.To learn more about the Dog Adoption Center, please contact Executive Director, Carmine DiCenso at 401-421-1399 x209 or [email protected].

Dogs To Get Their Ipaws As Scientists Build Animal ComputerIt would certainly have made life easier for Lassie. Scientists are designing computers that can be used by dogs so they can play, operate household appliances and even communicate with their owners. The researchers hope the technology can help make daily tasks quicker and easier for the animals in the same way it has transformed the lives of humans. The project is aimed at developing devices that can be controlled using touch screens and objects that can shaken like an iPhone by dogs to control computers. Dr Clara Mancini, head of the animal-computer interaction team at Open University, said the project was aimed at helping the disabled in their homes by making it easier for dogs to perform tasks for their owners such as turning on lights, switching on washing machines and answering the phone. She said, however, that she hoped the technology would also provide hu-mans with a new way of interacting and communicat-ing with their pets.

Sales of Cats and Dogs Banned in East Providence, RI! At its June 3rd meeting, the City Council of East Providence voted unanimously to ban the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores. The ordinance now in effect, prohibits the display, sale, auction or give away of live dogs and cats at pet stores and other commercial outlets.

Non-profit animal shelters are not subject to the ordinance which calls for up to a $2000 fine and/or up to 90 days community service for violators. Retail outlets may continue to provide space and care for animals owned by animal shelters or other non-profits.

Ward 4 councilwoman Christine Rossi sponsored the ordinance and said, “I really would like to see this ordinance passed in every city in the state of Rhode Island.

Each of the nine residents who spoke in favor of the new law highlighted the connection between pet stores and so-called “puppy mills.” Rita Falaguerra argued that reputable breeders would not willingly lose money by selling their animals to a pet store. “The only thing that I know that requires a middleman is a puppy mill,” she said. “They breed the puppies and they need an outlet and that is pet stores.”

Scott Bergantino, owner of The Perfect Puppy pet store in Scituate spoke in opposition and has filed a temporary injunction barring the city from enforcing the ordinance until a hearing in superior court on June 9th. Mr. Bergantino argued that pet buyers should be able to make their own decision, and would prefer to purchase pets in a retail store rather than search the internet for reputable breeders.

1. Get the DetailsThere are two major reasons pets get overheated, Dr. Aspros said, hyperthermia and their upper respiratory systems. Hyperthermia occurs when animals are trapped in an environment (like a car or the beach on a hot day) that overwhelms their ability to cool themselves. Pets with compromised upper airways, like bulldogs, or an acquired condition like paralysis of the larynx have more difficulty removing heat in their bodies through panting, Dr. Aspros said. These animals often find that, in attempting to cool themselves, they generate more heat through exertion and can fall victim to heat stroke.

2. Beat the SunPets are smarter than we give them credit for, and prefer staying at home and laying on cool surfaces (like your tiled kitchen floor) in the heat of the day. Save your outdoor time with your pet for early in the morning or in the evening once the sun has set. By taking your daily walk, run or visit to the park either before or after the sun is at its hot-test, the air will be easier for your pet to breathe and the ground will be cooler on the pads of their paws.

3. Leave Fluffy and Fido at Home“The classic mistake for owners is leaving a pet in a closed car on a sunny warm day when the temperature in your car can rapidly climb to over 140 degrees Fahrenheit,” Dr. Aspros said. “It’s solar heating that’s the culprit, so you can face serious risks even on a comfort-able day.” The takeaway? As much as your pet may love riding in the car or spending time with you, if it’s hot out and there’s a chance they’ll be uncomfortable the best thing to do is leave them at home. Panting takes more exertion than sweating and can bring your pet to respiratory distress faster than you think. Avoid any potential issue by keeping them safe and cool at home.

4. Hydration, Hydration, HydrationIn addition to overheating, pets can get dehydrated quickly, so you’ll want to make plenty of fresh, clean water available to them. Panting is effective in allowing animals to cool down because it helps evapo-rate fluids from the respiratory tract, Dr. Aspros said. Help replace these fluids and prevent dehydration by leaving out water or water alternatives throughout the day, particularly when your pet has spent time outside in the heat. Water alternatives are especially great for pets since they replenish electrolytes and taste great.

5. To Trim or Not to TrimMany pet owners, especially cat parents, incorrectly think that shaving their animals in the heat will help cool them down. In reality, the layers of your pet’s coat help to protect them from overheating and sunburn. Trimming long hair is perfectly okay, according to the ASPCA, but it’s unnecessary to do anything else for cooling purpos-es. Brushing your cat more often to help remove loose fur can also prevent overheating.

On any given warm night, you can find Nick-a-Nee’s, a small, corner bar in the Jewelry

District of Providence, bustling with people– some sitting under the Christmas lights that line the back patio. While more commonly known as the go-to spot for toe-tapping bluegrass shows, what you might not know is that they’re in their seventh year - in a row - of winning the Top Dog Reader’s Choice for “Best Dog Friendly Bar.”

For over a decade, Nick-a-Nee’s has been a friendly and regular stop-off for many dog owners on an evening stroll, wanting to swing by, grab a beer, and chat with locals. Stephanie Finizia, who has been running the bar for the past 18 years, said that dogs have been coming for about as long as she’s been there. And she said, it happened organically.

“There were a lot of people working here who had dogs, and they would bring them in for their shift and tie them up here. Then customers just started bringing theirs…it happened without encouragement. We cer-tainly haven’t tried, but we certainly haven’t discouraged! Some nights you’d get all these really great dogs because [the owners] didn’t want to bring them home, and this was how they interacted with people and other dogs.”

Those who are “in-the-know” of the pet-friendly en-vironment have definitely used it to their pets’ benefit - Nick-a-Nee’s has held several exciting pet parties. A few years ago, Providence-based photographer Traer Scott knew they were the best place for her dog Cricket’s quinceañera, and they drew quite a crowd of four-legged friends!

“Some nights we’ve got more dogs running around here than people!” Stephanie exclaimed. I asked if there was often altercations with opposing-tempered dogs, but she replied that most people that come are very aware of their pets - they don’t bring them if they’re not good around other dogs or people. Fortunately, all these years they’ve had good luck with the patrons and their pets.

If you happen to be there on a quieter night, you might hear a bit of barking from the Providence Animal Res-cue League (PARL), who share the neighborhood. The two businesses have had a great relationship over the past few years, and with their mutual love of

There is an amazing group right here in our own little Rhode Island that every single animal lover in our community should know about, but not

nearly enough do.

This group is made up of a volunteer board, who meet each month, and represent several major organizations in our state, including The RISPCA, Potter League, Providence Animal Rescue League, Animal Rescue League of Southern RI, PawsWatch, PAAWS, RI Animal Control Officers’ Association, Tails to Teach, and Westerly Animal Control.

This group owns and operates the RI Community Spay Neuter Clinic in Warwick. RICSNC is well-oiled ma-chine, run by exceptional administrative and veterinary professionals and volunteers who reached an astonish-ing 25,000 spays and neuters in December! Now, stop and think for a moment. If that number were miles, it would be the distance from Providence to Guatemala City…and back….THREE AND A HALF times! If that

number were people, it would be more than the human population of Cumberland! These guys have mad skills and they operate out of a state of the art, high quality facility.

So who is this amazing group I am talking about? Some of you know them, but too many don’t– so please allow me to introduce you to The Ocean State Animal Coalition – or OSAC. Since it was established in 2007 as a non-profit organization, OSAC has been working to reduce the number of animals entering shelters and eliminating the need for euthanasia as a means of population con-trol. Their first major endeavor was creating and over-seeing RICSNC. With results like the ones I mentioned above, you think OSAC would rest with that. I mean, in addition to OSAC, each board member is in an execu-tive or managerial position at their own organization.

But no. Not these guys. Enter Educate Humane and Jane Greco Deming.

OSAC believes that not only should we address the animal side of the equation - through providing af-fordable spays and neuters – they also feel it is equally important to address the human side. In 2014, OSAC launched an incredible new, statewide humane education program that Jane specifically designed to share valuable information about pet responsibility, respect and empathy. Her goals are not only to teach children early on how to properly care for pets, how to know when they aren’t ready for a pet, and how to appreciate the world around us – but perhaps more importantly, her main goal is teaching kids how to be better people– to be kinder, more compassionate, more respectful.

Jane’s programs are fun and engaging, but they also meet the State’s common core standards for education and provide quality character development lessons (mandated by RI law!). Programs are being presented in schools, school’s out programs, early childhood learning venues, community groups such as YMCA’s and Boys & Girls Clubs, and many more.

Jane is the woman for this job. With over 30 years experience in animal welfare, zoo management, and humane education, – both locally and internation-ally – Jane brings much to the table– from wildlife to companion animals, from environmental responsibil-ity to character development. She has created award winning, ground breaking educational programs and curriculum that continue to be taught across the country.

Impressed? You should be! Want to know who else was impressed? The ASPCA, the Baker Foundation, and the Nexdine Foundation – who all stand behind this initiative and are supporting its creation and implementation.

So how can you help? Do a little educating yourself by:- Volunteering to teach the pet owners of tomorrow (www.osac.org/educatehumane.html)

- Donating to OSAC, to help fund their incredible initiatives (www.osac.org/donate)

- Telling your friends who are troop leaders, teachers, and program directors about Educate Humane (www.osac.org/educatehumane.html)

- Telling anyone you know who has a pet in need of spaying or neutering about the Low-Cost Clinic (www.ricsnc.org)

A Letter to My DogA Letter to My Dog is a beautiful, heartwarming book featuring stunning photographs and deeply personal letters written by a variety of dog lovers to their beloved, four-legged friends. This special col-lection of touching letters and magnificent portraits is a celebration of the loyalty and unconditional love we have for our precious pups.

the dog who Spoke with godsWhen Elizabeth, a young pre-med. student happens upon Damien, a dog being used in laboratory research on her cam-pus, she has no way of knowing how drastically her life- and her beliefs- will be changed. Without meaning to, she slowly becomes drawn into the dog’s fate and is soon torn between the love and respect she has come to feel for Damien and the sense of loyalty and obligation she feels for the medical

29Congratulations to the staff of the Rhode Island Community Spay/Neuter Clinic (RICSNC) in Warwick who recently sterilized its 10,000th patient on January 31st. This milestone was reached just over 18 months after the clinic’s opening.

RICSNC opened its doors July 1, 2010 thanks to grant fund-ing from The Rhode Island Foundation. As a nonprofit, high-volume, high quality facility, the clinic offers subsidized spay/neuter services for cats and dogs. Two veterinarians perform up to 60 surgeries per day in a state-of-the-art facility, which offers free transportation within Rhode Island. Pamela Knoecklein, Clinic Director, says, “The clinic’s remarkable success is due to the highly skilled and dedicated staff that works together with great efficiency, while never compromising the excellent patient care they provide.”

Each year, more than 15,000 animals enter Rhode Island shel-ters and approximately 3,000 are euthanized. Taxpayer dollars must be spent to house and ultimately euthanize those animals in part because there are not enough homes for them all. Spay-ing and neutering is the only way to prevent the birth of unwanted animals, while saving the lives of those animals already in shelters. In addition, RICSNC currently partners with more than 70 shelters and rescue orga-

Spike is a 1 and 1/2 year old male. Spike is visually impaired. He is very sweet and re-sponds wonderfully to gentle handling. His sense of smell and hearing compensate so well that his previous owner did not realize he had a vision problem. Spike will do great with a gentle and caring companion.

Munji is a 9 month old male. He is very friendly and attentive but would benefit from training classes. Munji loves to play fetch and knows the “drop it” command.

Wolf is a 1 and 1/2 year old male. He is very social and enjoys petting. Wolf is a high en-ergy dog and requires a lot of exercise

Charlotte is a wonderful funny girl. She likes to hide under her bed and wait for you to open the door. Then all of a sudden surprise! She comes bounding out for snuggles and pets. She is nice to other cats and sweet to everyone. A great girl. We cant wait to see her go to a wonderful home!

Marley is a beautiful gray and white Maine Coon mix! This five year-old girl loves to be around people and purrs affectionately when she receives attention. Poor Marley had many kittens before coming to EGAPL and prefers not to be around other cats now. She would be happiest as an only kitty.

Howdy is our lovable Boxer mix and an EGAPL favorite! Poor Howdy originally ar-rived at EGAPL with a paw injured so badly that his leg needed to be removed. This brave boy is managing just fine with three legs, and after all he has been through, he deserves to be comfortable and spoiled in his forever home!

Kaine is a handsome young yellow lab mix! Poor Kaine came to EGAPL with a severe paw injury that required surgery. He has recov-ered wonderfully in his foster home, where he loves to play and does well with the other dogs!

Martini is a gorgeous yellow and white lab mix! She is a two year-old girl who took care of her puppies before arriving at EGAPL. Mar-tini is known for her gentle nature and will make a great addition to her new home! She loves to be around other dogs and becomes more confident around them.

Pringle is a chi mix boy who is about 12 pounds of sweetness. He is about 8 years old and gets along with everyone. He loves his back yard, chasing squirrels, and long walks in the park. Pluto, the miniature pinscher is around 12 to 13 years old. He loves to go for walks, and run around the yard. He is house trained and listens and obeys very well. Charlie is a cage protective Severe Macaw but once outside his cage he is a sweet bird who likes to sit on laps and play. Charlie tends to be a shoulder monkey and needs some training to discourage this behavior. He LOVES attention and is a big talker! He’ll surprise you with all the new words he learns.

Bucca is an energetic Moluccan Cockatoo. He has just learned to step up to one of our volunteers. He has come a long way in his training. Preference is for a home with expe-rience with large birds. Also, Bucca, like most cockatoos can be very loud at times.

Ruffles is a spirited Blue and Gold Macaw. He enjoys being outside on his harness and loves having cuddle time at the bottom of his cage. Ruffles seems to prefer women over men and would love to find a forever home with some-one with macaw or large bird experience.

animals, they started Pints for Paws– a fundraiser with craft beer tasting, great food, and live music all night, with proceeds going to PARL. The event has gained so much attention over the past few years - and so many adorable dogs! - that PARL has had to relocate to a larger venue - Fête - for this year’s fourth annual.

Though sad Nick-a-Nee’s doesn’t have the space to host this year, Stephanie is still excited for the event, “It’s got-ten bigger than we can handle! It’s been a great relation-ship. I’ve been able to enjoy raising money for them!”

After talking about all the dogs that have come by, I began to wonder if they have ever had any other visitors to the bar. Stephanie laughed and said, “We’ve had dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, horses - all sorts of crazy animals!

Patios, Pints and Pups!Continued from page 21.

Kenji found his new home in July 2003 in California. He was just 3 months

old and small enough to fit his head in a shoe. Kenji grew quite fast. In California, his sneaky ways soon showed when he stood up

on his hind legs helping himself to food cooking on the stove. He was rather clumsy and would walk into a wall here and there, jump up without looking and “bonk” there goes his head. Super intelligent, cute and funny...Kenji loved being the center of attention. He shared the stage with his new friend Keiko who had been around for a few years already. Soon...she would pick up on his mischievous ways.Kenji would move to Arizona, Massachusetts, back to Arizona and finally one more time to MA. Travel in the car started out a bit rocky the first time...little “stomach problem” and a huge mess...but after that, a ride in the car was the highlight of the day.Kenji loved to play catch..go for a run...walk along the beach. He even liked playing in the snow....but forget the rain.In 2013, Kenji was diagnosed with lymphoma. The medicine worked a bit, but unfortunately remission was short lived. Kenji was lucky to find the awesome folks at Wakefield Animal Hospital. He was comfortable for a while but on December 14th, something seemed wrong. Kenji knew it was time. At 2:15 PM Kenji passed away looking at his owner. Now he will always be young and playful until the time they all meet again.

We’ve had great danes as tall as people!” The wild-est pet story she had was about a girl with a rabbit on a leash, “The way she and the rabbit interacted with people was unique.” She also told a story about a friend who was a policeman; she said he would come on his horse when they were opening, and they would have part of the walls opened up to make room.

To comply with the Health Department, pets cannot be kept anywhere that there is food, so they take pre-cautions at the bar. But you can be sure that if you’re strolling down South Street with your beloved pet, you’re always welcome to take a break at Nick-a-Nee’s, where there will be a cold beer for you and a bowl of water for your best friend!
