From the desk at T Bar…What a winning combination ... young leading breeders, the latest genetically sired bulls and the leading combination of breeds suited for top feeder calf markets! In few sales, can one select bulls for the heifer pasture suitable for calving ease and peace of mind and/or select a power bull that will add pounds of calf at weaning... load them in a trailer and have your bull shopping completed in one afternoon.

Since the beginning of “Best of the Breeds”, the Parkland area of Saskatchewan has had the luxury and convenience of selecting top quality bulls in their local area from leading breeders. The breeders, who supply these bulls, are leaders in their respective breeds and are competitive on a national level. They use A.I. to infuse the newest genetics into their programs; as a result, you their customers, can benefi t without traveling large distances or incurring added expense. The consignors are very reputable, stand behind the product they offer, but most importantly, want you to get your pastures serviced. If you have a problem, they are only a phone call away.

The future bodes well for the beef cattle sector and agriculture in general. With the North American cow inventories at lowest levels since the early 50’s, we will gradually move to a beef shortage for world consumption. Since our industry is not like the poultry and hog industries, restocking will take several years ... possibly more than this decade. Demand for the maternal side of the beef industry will fi nd a greater importance; therefore, when selecting your bulls do not overlook maternal traits.

I call the “Best of the Breeds Bull Sale” an event. The ladies host one of the great noon luncheons (complimentary, along with refreshments to wash it down.) If time permits, come early and go through a powerful group of bulls. All weight and scrotal measurements will be available sale morning as the bulls are semen checked and vet inspected ... ready for your pasture. If you require a preview of any of the bulls, they are available for viewing at anytime prior the sale at their home farms. All the bulls will be at the sale barn on Saturday prior the sale for viewing.

We had strongly considered using Bentley, but in the end decided to have him kick off our sale as he is the only 2 year old in the offering and quite possibly one of the best we have offered for sale. hope calving is going well for all. We would like to thank all of our past buyers and bidders who supported us over the years.

The bulls this year were raised on mother’s milk and grass until weaning. The bulls were weaned in late October and were fed a hay, grain and supplement diet until Mid-December when they graduated to silage.

This year we used an AI sire from the States, RAF Wideworld 920, and he has defi nitely impressed us. He has left us with a pen of stout, growthy, masculine bulls. We are also offering sons from our

own herd sires; three bulls from Peak Dot Resolute 37W, they were our high sellers in last year’s sale. The SAV Replica 9484 herd sire is a full brother in blood to the immortal SAV 8180 Traveler 004, has a son selling. Black Ridge Powerstroke 14U has three sons in the sale, and they are impressive. We also have a son of the calving ease AI sire Connealy Thunder.

This bull has also been a favorite all year long. He is big, square and long bull with lots of bone underneath him. He is clean sheathed, has a nice front end with a square hip. Welcome to our 9th Annual Bull Sale. It has been a year of optimism in the cattle business, only to be tempered by events that have held back the true boom we are expecting in the beef industry. If it weren’t for the e-coli event in Alberta and the massive drought in the USA pushing

feed prices through the roof, who knows where prices would be! The only thing we know is that we are still poised for a dramatic increase in calf prices if we have a normal weather year in North America.

The heavier calves still bring the most money in the fall and a white bull will add pounds more effi ciently than any other breed.

Dogpatch Acres Charolais Welcome to the 9 th annual Best of the Breeds Bull Sale. As cattle numbers across North America continue to decline due to pricing, drought and other factors, those of us that choose to stay with the industry are setting ourselves up for long-term gain.

This fall we were able to extend our grazing season, therefore never started our bulls on pellets until mid October. Unfortunately, they didn’t like them, didn’t perform well on those, and it cost us some gain. However, we switched them to a Feed Rite grower ration, and now they are coming on strong!

With calf prices through the roof, it is essential to ensure you are raising the most pounds of live calf possible. This starts with selecting a herdsire with calving ease built in, and the performance to produce the pounds of red meat by fall. Our cattle have to be quiet and easy to handle as the whole family helps around the barn. Calving time should be low stress for the cows and their owners!

New this year are bulls off SVS Redstream 60X, the non-diluter red bull we purchased from Sunny Valley Simmentals, Hanley, SK in 2011. Redstream has added extra performance to our red program and has produced some exciting bulls for this year’s sale, many of which carry his dark red color.

The Polled Full Fleckvieh sons off our herd bull, Double Bar D Legend 87W created a lot of excitement in 2012 where they were the fi rst of his off spring to sell. We’ve got more polled full fl eckvieh bulls for your perusal this year with perhaps the best bull we’ve ever raised in Zeus 57Z. Fleckvieh cattle display early accelerated growth with ease of fl eshing on a moderate frame. Right from birth, these Legend calves display extra thickness and muscle and are easy to spot in the pen.

Our new herdsire SLC Outback 142X was the National Champion Gelbvieh Bull at Agribition. The last day of Agribition he competed in the Supreme Challenge, which are all the show winners from the major shows across North America.He was selected top 10 out of 40 champion bulls. What an exciting time for us and our program.This year we are offering both black and red polled bulls from both our walking sires and top A.I sires.Three sires represented in this year’s sale BLB Stacker, RPS Umbra and BLB Piper have moved on so this may be there last progeny to sell. His dam BBB 107M is a Holman daughter out of BBB 186H.107M had two maternal brothers BLB 14N and BBB 226K that were herdsires in our program. Tank is another breederprospect. He was part of our showstring at Agribition this past fall. He is an easy fl eshing bull with a lot of eye appeal and style. We are testing him for both the Homo-Black and Homo-Polled gene.Tanks sire RPS 82U produces sound footed, good tempered offspring with lots of hair. His daughters are good uddered as well. 8Z dam BLB 1W is a Garth daughter with a moderate frame and picture perfect udder. She is a part of our very best black cow family. This family is very fertile with a short gestation. We have tagged four females no. 1 in the last 5 years, which shows their consistency. 1W dam BLB 39P has raised many herdsires and daughters retained in our herd. BLB Titan 34Z is the 4th of our breeder prospects this year. All from different sires. He is a deep sided, good haired bull, with a lot of testical development. 34Z had our highest WPDA of 4.11 lbs. on Jan. 27. We purchased his dam FLAD 105U at the Alliance Sale.She is sired by Precision and has the great 66M cow on her dams side. She is a powerful good tempered cow with a beautiful udder. She has high milk yield which is where 34Z got his high WPDA. His sire BLB 21P is a herd bull I sold to my uncle as a yearling and brought back to use because of his pedigree. 21P was admired by Vern and Eileen Davidson that spring as well. They saw something in him and they were right. Titan is a well balanced bull with both maternal and performance traits. Our highest gainer and highest WPDA bull.

Bolt is a solid and eye appealing black herdsire prospect. Sired by RPS 82U,who is the sire of all our black bulls. 32Z grand sire is the great WGG 90J. I consider 32Z a Junior 90J in a black coat. He is really stout made and very structurally correct. His dam is red so you will get both red and black calves when bred to red cows. His daughters will be very good.

What a meat machine. 17Z will add lbs. at weaning. His dam BLB 8N is a very sound good uddered cow. We showed her at Agribition with her 2011 bull calf. She has a perfect udder and is very correct structurally. 17Z will be able to go out and get the job done come spring.With his length he will have no trouble reaching mature cows.
