9ijakids Cheat Sheet
Introduction
8 Things I Considered When Selecting School
Summary Snapshot of the Schools
IntroductionMy son is going to secondary school in September 2019 and it
can be frustrating gathering information about various
secondary schools. So, this cheat sheet is to give every mother
a head start in their search and shortlisting of secondary
schools.
Note, that this list is not exhaustive but based on my
requirements when I was searching for a school for my son.
My list is very focused on my requirements and then I threw in
a few based on information from my friends. But who knows,
maybe by my second son or my niece’s turn, there would be
additions and updates to the list.
So, let’s start by asking the most important question. What
were my requirements? The first and non-negotiable was it
must be BOARDING in Lagos and its close environs. I am a
strong advocate of boarding school for secondary school. So
apart from boarding, I was looking for a school with a blend of
ACADEMICS, EXTRA CURRICULAR and VALUES.
Affordability is also a key consideration. We don’t want to
break bank for secondary school, when there is almighty
university to still think about.
I hope you find my cheat list helpful and if you have any
suggestions or a school, you feel I should add to the list,
please send me an email [email protected]

8 Things I Considered When Selecting a
Secondary School for My Child
I had a short list of what I was looking for which can be summed up as a
school with high academic achievement, strong level of discipline, a good
balance of extracurricular activities and MUST be boarding. However, all
my son wants is a school that has a football team and the secondary
school of his primary school – cant blame him (his passion plus comfort
zone - the only school he had really known ). In the end, I am looking for
the best environment where my son will blossom to be the best he can be.
I know that children learn in various ways and there are several factors
that promote learning which might be different for each child.
9ijakids Cheat Sheet
Several entrance exams for
secondary schools typically
happen between Nov and
March. So summer holiday is
the right time to start
shortlisting potential
secondary schools for your
child. We all know that the
success of a student’s
secondary school
experience has become
essential to university
admissions. So its an
important decision, and you
should not do it at the last
minute.
As parents, we need to be able to identify and select the "best fit" for each child to enable our children experience happiness, thrive, and achieve their educational dreams.

Even if you have your heart set on one school, try to visit at least three schools to compare. Also, what does your child want and think of the school? Lastly talk to parents who have their kids in your shortlisted schools and ensure you visit the school. Its good to visit with your child during the normal school day. Speak to the students and teachers (If the school doesn't let you near its students, that's not a good sign.)
All the Best!!!
Does the school get a good percentage of higher grades?
What are the school’s strengths and how will the environment motivate my child’s learning? How does their curriculum help my child for future university admissions?
What are their exams results like in the last 3-5 years?
Does the extra curricular offered by the school match my child’s interest? Is it a priority for them?
Do they have enough out of school activities? As these are a good indicator of the breadth of experiences available to students.
Does the school’s policy on homework and discipline reflect your own values and expectations?
Are the facilities well maintained? Are the children well-presented and polite?
What size of school? Big or small? Boarding vs Day? Coed ?
9ijakids Cheat Sheet
So how do you select the best school for your child?
