Baft¡eç this week's Counselor's Com€rwill focu¡ on dealing with grief.

Grief is a naû¡ral Ìssponse to loss orchange in ou lives. Tbe loss may be assimple as losing an item of clothing to arno¡c severe loss srch as a loss of em-ployment divorce or dearh of a lovedorp or aoquainørrce.

lbere are five predictable stages towbat is hrown as tbe Grlef Process'tbey do mt fall into any particular order.

Shock is generally the firstresponseb sr¡dden loss or change. Sbock nnypodæc several emotional or pbysicalspnptom¡ ranging from forge6ilnessurd stomrch problems to vomiting andblackout¡. Severe sbocksbould þ heatedas amedical emergerrcy.

IÞnlal of tbe loss may be ae sirtpleas forgeüing frrom tine to tinæ, to æh¡-ally reñrsing to ækrowlodge tbe loar aralrerrranentcoodition. In events srrch asdeatb, deniat can come in tþ form ofrefirsing to discuss the events swround-ing 6e death, insisting that daily rou-thes be kept "as always" and/or insist-

ing that everyoæ speak of tbe dece¡sed-as tbougb hey'sbe we¡e still in tbc room.

Anger ir a very naûr¡l rcsponse. ItmÂy rqkê 6e form of general 'lnoodi-nes6" to outigbt feelingr of violence.Anger is not wront, but must be dealtwith in an appopriaæmanner, if ûrmedinwud it may result in feelings of inad-equæy,de¡ression, bw self+steet¡ self-habe4 suicidc, nighura¡es, eùc. Angerbrr¡ed outward may be observed as sar-casru batefr¡lnes¡, bitternese, to æualphysical violencc.

Guüt is also nanral puticularlywhen a sudden death or severc injury isinvolved. Tbc "\ühat-ifs" and "Should-haves"may flood tbemind and ca¡¡seanindividual to believe tbey could/sbouldbavc somebow prevented the loss.

Acceptance is tbe final phase in thegrief process. It is not a dra¡natic, imme-diaþ 'tappening" as many of us would¡xefer, butratber a gradual and some-time¡ slow adjusment to tbc loss orcbange.

Suggestions fc dealing wiö griefa¡e:
