It is essential to read and observe the Safety Notes in the Appendix to these instructions. If you ever dispose of the model, be sure to pass on these safety notes to the new owner, together with the complete building instructions. Introduction The LEKI EXTRA 330SC is a superbly manoeuvrable RC aerobatic model which is an excellent choice for simple aerobatics and extreme 3-D flying alike. Please note: the aeroplane is by no means suitable for beginners . The model is very highly pre-fabricated, but nevertheless the construction stages described in these instruc-tions must be carried out with great care, otherwise we cannot guarantee that the model will fly accurately and safely. The all-up weight must not exceed 1350 g. RC system accessories and electric power system com ponents (not included) You will need the items listed below in order to complete and operate the model. GRAUPNER MX-16 2.4 HoTT RC system Order No. 4755 Transmitter charge lead Order No. 3022 Charge lead with G3.5 connector Order No. 2970.L ULTRAMAT 16S battery charger Order No. 6468 3/2200 LiPo flight battery, 45C Order No. 9722.3 Servo extension lead, 100 mm (two required) Order No. 3935.11 Servo extension lead, 180 mm (two required) Order No. 3935.18 Servo extension lead, 500 mm (two required) Order No. 3935.50 DES 476 BB servo (four required) Order No. 7915 COMPACT CONTROL 45BEC speed controller Order No. 7224 Tools and adhesives required (not included) Balsa knife Order No. 980 Screwdriver Order No. 5779.1 Allen key, 1.5 mm A/F Order No. 5775.1,5 Cyano-acrylate adhesive (“cyano”) Order No. 5821 Cyano activator (“kicker”) Order No. 953.150 You will also need the following items: 11 mm A/F open-ended spanner, flat-nose pliers, paper scissors, felt-tip pen. Building instructions Please read right through these building instructions before you start building, so that you have a clear idea of the sequence required. Before each stage identify all the parts, tools and adhesives you will need, and place them ready. Use a sharp balsa knife to remove rough edges from the airframe components, and cut through any temporary lugs produced by the moulding process. Do NOT separate the control surfaces; instead flex them to and fro several times to free up the moulded hinges. When working on foam components always lay the parts on a clean, smooth surface, or a layer of soft foam. Use cyano glue and activator for all joints unless the instruc-tions specifically state otherwise. The best method is to apply glue to one face, then spray activator on the mating face before bringing the parts together. Cyano-acrylates must not contact any part of your b ody, and especially not the eyes. For this reason we recommend that you wear pr otective goggles when using this material. Store the adhesive out of the reach of children. Do not use

‘foam-safe’ cyano, white glue or epoxy, as these ad hesives do not produce durable joints between any material and high-densit y SOLIDPOR® foam. The power system

The illustration shows all the components of the power system. Note that the propeller and spinner must not be fitted until the fuselage has been completed. Fix the electric motor (1) to the motor mount (2) using four countersunk screws (3). The E-PROP (6) is attached to the motor shaft at a later stage using parts (4) to (10). Note that the retaining nut (8) must be tightened firmly using an 11 mm A/F spanner. Fuselage and tail group

Glue the motor mount (2) in the right-hand fuselage shell (11), taking care to orien-tate it correctly: the opening for the motor leads should be on the underside and central. Please ensure that you apply adhesive to the full c ontact area between the motor mount and the fuselage sides. Immediately wipe off any excess glue using kitchen paper. Assemble the wing screw support (13) and glue it in place. Glue the retaining clips (15) in both fuselage shells (11) and (12). Connect the speed con-troller to the motor and receiver, and check that the motor rotates in the right direc-tion: clockwise as seen from behind the motor. The two fuselage shells can now be glued together permanently. Caution: due to the large joint area it is important to check the fit “dry” (without glue) first. Good ventilation is essential for this stage; work outdoors if you are not sure. Ensure that glue is applied to all the contact surfaces.

The illustration shows the components of the battery compartment cover (14) and the tailplane (17). Please note that the elevator horn (19) is not glued in place until later. There are two methods of cutting the elevator free: the normal option is to open up the slot forward; however, the version shown by the dotted line produces a stronger tailplane and better damped elevator response. When gluing the reinforcement (18) in place ensure that no glue gets onto the hinge line. If necessary, the spring power of the retaining clips (15) can be reduced by opening the jaws slightly.

Here we see the elevator servo prepared for installation; secure the extension lead connector with a drop of glue. Set the servo to neutral (centre) from the transmitter, and fit the cut-down output arm (included with the DES 476 BB) as shown.

Glue the elevator servo in place as shown, then attach the tailplane (17). Caution: do not be tempted to use thin cyano to glue the ser vo, as this will run inside the case and jam the gears. Important: check the se rvo function before and after installing it in the fuselage. Connect the pushrods (20) at both ends, and only then glue the elevator horn (19) to the elevator.

The rudder servo can be installed in the same way. Run the 500 mm servo extension lead forward through the fuselage.

The picture shows the fin (21) already glued in place. Take care to position the bottom edge of the fin exactly flush with the end of the fuselage.

The illustration shows the CFRP stiffener tube (48) fitted to the rudder pushrod (22). It is installed by cutting the metal pushrod (22) in half, sanding the surfaces, and gluing both ends in the stiffener tube (48) using cyano. Pull hard on both ends of the new pushrod to ensure that the glued joints are secure.

Note: The CFRP stiffeners (48) are only required for 3-D aerobatics. They can be fitted at any time if you think they are necessary, even after you have completed the model. The undercarriage

The illustration shows the tailwheel assembly components. The first step is to slip the wire tailwheel unit (28) into the bracket (29), then bend it at the correct angle using a pair of flat-nose pliers. Push the bush (34) into the tailwheel (31), fit both on the axle followed by the collet (33) on the outside, then clamp the bush with a grubscrew (32).

Use a balsa knife to cut a slot in the rudder to accept the steering lug (30). Slip the steering lug (30) onto the steering arm, glue the lug in the slot in the rudder, then glue the tailwheel bracket (29) to the fuselage. Do not use activator spray for this.

Page 7: 9545 LEKI EXTRA 330SC en - Graupner LEKI EXTRA 330SC_en.pdf · The LEKI EXTRA 330SC is a superbly manoeuvrable RC aerobatic model which is an excellent choice for simple aerobatics

Glue the plastic main undercarriage bracket (23) in the fuselage, then assemble the undercarriage components (24) to (27) as shown in the picture. Note that the wire undercarriage unit (27) must face forward.

Offer up the two inner wheel leg fairings (38) to check that they fit; you will need to adjust the angle of the top edge using a balsa knife.

The photo shows the parts of the main wheels and fairings / spats. Glue the prepared leg fairings (38) to the wire undercarriage unit (27), then slip the collet supports (37) onto the axles and glue them in place.

Page 8: 9545 LEKI EXTRA 330SC en - Graupner LEKI EXTRA 330SC_en.pdf · The LEKI EXTRA 330SC is a superbly manoeuvrable RC aerobatic model which is an excellent choice for simple aerobatics

This shot shows the outer collet support (37) fitted. Check once more that the wheels are free to rotate, then glue the outer spat shells (39) in place. The wing Glue the main spar (41) in the wing (40) to provide the necessary bending strength. Move the ailerons up and down several times to ease the action of the hinge.

Set the aileron servos to neutral from the transmitter, fit the output arms on them, then glue the servos in the wing. Connect both ends of the pushrods (22) and glue the horns (19) to the ailerons. Glue the 180 mm servo extension leads in the wing, keeping them in a straight line, then glue the spar cover (42) in the slot. Caution: be sure to apply plenty of glue to the recess in the wing. Glue the wing retainer screw bush (43) to the wing to complete this aspect of construction. Offer up the wing to the fuselage and temporarily fit the retaining screw (44).

Page 9: 9545 LEKI EXTRA 330SC en - Graupner LEKI EXTRA 330SC_en.pdf · The LEKI EXTRA 330SC is a superbly manoeuvrable RC aerobatic model which is an excellent choice for simple aerobatics

Installing the receiver and LiPo flight pack The first step is to connect the servo leads to the receiver; we suggest the following sequence: speed controller to socket 1, left aileron servo to socket 2, elevator servo to socket 3, rudder servo to socket 4, right aileron servo to socket 5. It is a good idea to connect 100 mm extension leads to sockets 2 and 5 permanently, as this makes it much easier to plug in the aileron servos when you rig the model. Deploy the receiver aerials to the outside of the fuselage, keeping them at 90° to each other, and fix them in place with clear tape.

Slide the LiPo flight battery into place as shown, and connect it to the speed con-troller.

Check all the model’s working systems in turn from the transmitter. Maximum control surface travels: 30 mm each way for ailerons, 45 mm each way for elevator, 75 mm each way for rudder, all measured at the inboard or bottom end of the trailing edge. When you are satisfied, install the spinner and propeller as described earlier. Decals If you decide to use the GRAUPNER decals, there is no need to paint the SOLIDPOR® components. If you opt for the LEKI decal version, you should first paint the model overall using GRAUPNER LEXACOLOR spray paint, Order No. 945.2, or spray paint, Order No. 928.2. Do not sand or rub down the SOLIDPOR® surfaces; simply wipe them with Spannfix (cellulose) thinners before applying the paint. The

panel lines and / or rivet-heads on the fuselage can be picked out with a fine felt-tip pen if you so wish. Cut out the individual decals and name placards and apply them to the model, referring to the illustrations on the kit box lid and in the building instruc-tions. The model is completed by sticking the canopy (45) to the fuselage. Balancing To check the Extra’s CG please assemble the model completely, ready to fly, but with the LiPo battery disconnected. The correct CG position is 80…85 mm aft of the wing root leading edge. Adjust the battery position as required to balance the aeroplane correctly. You can check the CG simply by supporting the model under the wing on two fingertips; it should balance level at the point indicated. Flying For the first flight please wait for a day with little or no breeze. The ideal flying site is a flat, closely-mown grass area without obstructions. Assemble the model com-pletely, and check that all the control surfaces are at neutral. Allow the model to take off from the ground, facing directly into any wind. Initially apply minimal aileron and elevator corrections to keep the model in a steady, straight climb. Fine adjustments are possible using the trim sliders below and adjacent to the transmitter sticks. Always land the model flying directly into wind, with the motor idling but not switched off. Flare out just before touch-down with careful use of up-elevator. Here at GRAUPNER Modellbau we hope you have many enjoyable flights with your new LEKI EXTRA 330SC Replacing the motor

If the motor should ever need to be replaced, it can be removed by pushing it into the inside of the model. The new motor can be pulled into place from the front using the motor installation aid (26).

Safety Notes Valid third-party insurance must be obtained before you operate a ny model aircraft; this is now a legal requirement. Before you attempt to assemble and fly the model it is essent ial to read right through the building and operating instructions attentively. You alone are respon sible for the safe operation of your RC model aircraft. Young persons should only be permitt ed to build and operate this model under the instruction and supervision of an adult who is aware of the hazards involved in this activity. In legal terms our models are classed as aircraft, and as s uch are subject to legal regulations and restrictions which must be observed. Our brochure “Modellflugrec ht, Paragrafen und mehr” (Model Aviation Law, Legal Requirements and more) is avai lable under Order No. 8034.02, and contains a summary of all these rules. Your local model shop should have a copy which you can read. You will find more information on this subject in the operating instructions supplied with your radio control system. Be sure to use only those parts included in the kit, together with ot her genuine Graupner ac-cessories and replacement parts as recommended expressly by us. Even if you change a single component you can no longer be sure that the system will wor k reliably, and such changes also invalidate your guarantee. Take every care to avoid short-circuits and reversed polarity. The high energy density of LiPo batteries involves a risk of fire and even explosion. A radio-controlled model aircraft can only work properly and fulfi l your expectations if it is built very carefully and in accordance with the building instructions. If you wish to avoid injuring people and damaging property it is essential to be careful and painst aking at all stages of building and operating your model. Nobody would climb into a full-size a ircraft and attempt to fly it without undergoing suitable training beforehand. Successful model flying is only possible with suitable training and plenty of practice. As manufacturers we are not in a position to influence the way you build and operate your RC model aircraft, and for this reason we deny all liability. A ll we can do is expressly point out the hazards involved in this activity. We suggest that you ask an experienced model flyer for help, or joi n a model club or flight training school. Your local model shop and the specialist magazines are excellent sources of information. If at all possible, it is always best to join a c lub and fly at the approved model flying site. Adhesives contain materials which may be hazardous to health under certain circumstances. Read and observe the notes and warnings supplied by the manufacturer of these materials. The operator of the model must be in full possession of his or her bodily and mental faculties. As with car driving, operating a model aircraft under the influenc e of alcohol or drugs is not permissible under any circumstances. If there are passers-by or spectators at your flying site, make sure that they are aware of the dangers inherent in your activity before you start the motor, and i nsist that they keep a safe distance away. Always keep a safe distance from people and objects when flyi ng; never fly low over people’s heads, and never fly directly towards them. Radio-controlled models should only be flown in a temperature range o f -5° to +35° C. Extreme temperatures can lead to changes in battery capacity and mater ial characteristics, weakened glued joints and other unwanted effects. All model flyers should behave in a way that minimises the danger to people and property. Never act in any manner which will disturb other flyers, and jeopardise safe, orderly flying at the site.

Page 14: 9545 LEKI EXTRA 330SC en - Graupner LEKI EXTRA 330SC_en.pdf · The LEKI EXTRA 330SC is a superbly manoeuvrable RC aerobatic model which is an excellent choice for simple aerobatics

Never operate your model aircraft close to high-tension overhead cables, industrial sites, residential areas, public roads, squares, school playgrounds, public parks or sports grounds etc. Pre-flight checks Check all the model’s working systems before every flight: sw itch on the transmitter followed by the receiving system, extend or deploy the transmitter ae rial correctly, then check that all the model’s control surfaces are at neutral (centre). Check the control surface travels, and that they respond in the correct “sense” to transmitter commands. R epeat the check with the motor running, while a friend holds the model securely for you. If you are a relative beginner to model flying, we strongly re commend that you ask an experienced modeller to support and help you during the first few flights . Don’t ignore our warnings. They refer to materials and situations w hich, if ignored, can result in fatal injury or permanent damage. Propellers and other rotating parts which are powered by a motor constitute a permanent hazard and represent a real risk of injury. Don’t touch them with a ny part of your body. For example, a propeller spinning at high speed can easily cut your f inger badly. Keep well clear of the rotational plane of the propeller. You never know when some part may come loose and fly off at high speed, hitting you or anybody else in t he vicinity; this can easily result in serious personal injury. Ensure that no other object c an come into contact with the revolving propeller. Ensure that it is impossible for any object to stall or block the propeller. Every time you intend to operate your model check carefully that i t and everything attached to it (e.g. propeller, gearbox, RC components etc.) is in good condition and undamaged. If you find a fault, do not fly the model until you have corrected it. Before you switch the radio system on. always satisfy yoursel f that your frequency is vacant. Radio interference caused by unknown sources can occur at any time without warning. If this should happen, your model will be uncontrollable and completely unpredict able. Never leave your radio control system unguarded, as another person might pick it up a nd try to use it. Do not switch on the electric motor unless you are sure that th ere is nothing in the rotational plane of the propeller. Never attempt to stop the spinning propeller. E lectric motors with the propeller attached should only be run when firmly mounted. If you are to fly your model safely and avoid problems, it is es sential that you are aware of its position and attitude throughout each flight - so don’t let it fly too far away! If you detect a control problem or interference during a flight, immediately land the model to prevent a potential accident. Models must always give way to full-size aircraft. Take-off and landing strips should be kept free of people and other obstacles. Your RC system can only work reliably if the batteries are kept fully charged. Never use batteries which are hot, faulty or damaged. At all times heed the instructions provided by the battery manufacturer. Before each flight check that all functions on the model aircraf t are working correctly, and that the radio control system is in good order and operating at full range. Note that the motor control (throttle) function on the transmit ter must always be moved to the OFF position as the first stage in preparing for a flight. To av oid the danger of the electric motor bursting into life unexpectedly, always switch the transmit ter on first, and only then the receiving system. The opposite applies at the end of a flight: a lways switch the receiving system off first, and finally the transmitter.

Check that the control surfaces follow the movement of the trans mitter sticks. After each session remove the battery from the model, discharge it to the recommended level, and store it in a safe place, well out of the reach of children, at a temperature in the range approx. +5°C to +25°C. Please don’t misunderstand the purpose of these notes. We only want t o make you aware of the many dangers and hazards which can arise if you work careles sly or irresponsibly. If you take reasonable care, model flying is a highly creative, in structive, enjoyable and relaxing pastime. Environmental Protection Notes

This symbol on a product, in the user instructions or the packaging, in-dicates that you must not dispose of that item, or the electronic components it contains, in the ordinary domestic waste when the product comes to the end of its useful life. The correct method of disposal is to take it to your local collection point for recycling electrical and electronic equipment.

Individual markings indicate which materials can be recycled and re-used. You can make an important contribution to the protection of our shared environment by re-using the product, recycling the basic materials or re-processing redundant equipment in other ways. Dry cells and rechargeable batteries must be removed from the device and taken separately to the appropriate battery disposal centre. If you don’t know the location of your nearest disposal centre, please enquire at your local council office.
