with Father Michael I have been writing about my family vacations as a child to a little resort in New Hampshire. As much as we dreaded it, our time away would end soon enough and it would be time to come home. There was always sadness on that day we left the mountain. As time went on and I got older, some of the magic faded. It was still a neat place to visit, but the eyes of a 14 year old see things differently from a 6 year old. As I moved into high school the Inn took on a new meaning for me. I went from being a guest to an employee. For a number of summers I spent July and August working at the Inn. I did everything from dishwasher, to bell boy, to repair man, to entertainment director. I had a blast. There were fun people to work with, and I loved the experience. It served me well even into my college years. Shortly thereafter, the Inn closed forever. The property remained abandoned for years. Eventually the National Forest Service took over the land. They brought in bulldozers and excavators and pulled out every bit of what was once a bustling little resort. Years later I returned to visit the property. The only evidence that remained were two shuffle board courts and a filled-in swimming pool. Mother Nature is slowly reclaiming every bit of that land. Roads, sidewalks and footprints of buildings have all disappeared. I stood there and felt a sense of sadness; Moosilauke was only a memory. But, I will always be grateful for my Mom who first brought me there, for the neat people I met through the years, and finally for the lessons of life it taught me. In some ways it was an experience of the Paschal Mystery; living, dying and then somehow rising again. I trust many of you have had similar experiences, where the adventures of a vacation helped to immerse you deeply in life. It’s time for me to return. Back to work. On a different note, there is a sad anniversary for the parish this weekend. August 16th marks the first anniversary of the death of Deacon Jerry Steffens. I was here only a few weeks when he fell ill and passed away. I had the opportunity to hear him preach just once. Although I did not get to know him well, it is clear he was a deeply spiritual man who touched the hearts of many within this community. We continue to miss his presence and spirit. Rest in peace, Jerry.

Stewardship Corner

Our First reading today, from Isaiah, says, “… for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” How well does this describe our

own house of prayer – Holy Cross?

What can you do to help the

newcomer, the visitor, feel welcome at Holy Cross?

Is there someone in your family or

your neighborhood who you could invite to attend Mass with you?

PARISH OUTREACH YOU CAN HELP PARISH OUTREACH

MAKE A CONNECTION WITH OUR ISOLATED NEIGHBORS

Do you have a family member or neighbor in our Parish who is unable to get out due to illness, age or disability? Please help us locate these individuals and bring them into contact with our Holy Cross community. Parish Outreach volunteers get in touch with these parishioners on a monthly basis. By establishing this caring relationship we ensure that those who may be unable to be with us on the weekend are never far from our thoughts. We remind them that they are an important part of our Parish life in the

following ways: children in our Religious Education program send seasonal cards, birthday and holiday cards are sent from the Parish, and volunteers visit them during the Advent and Easter seasons. If you are aware of someone who would benefit from these efforts, please contact the Parish Outreach office at 265-2200 ext. 13. Thank you for caring by helping us to reach out to the homebound members of our community.

Thank you to all the families who have re-registered their children in our program. We still have families who have not signed up, and our deadline is past. If you still need to register, please do so as soon as possible. We are beginning to put classes together. We cannot guarantee your child a placement if we do not have your registration form.

Levels 2 through 7 will begin classes the week of September 29th. Level 7 parents and students will be invited to attend a meeting which will outline the Two Year Confirmation Preparation. Level 8 will begin classes the week of November 3rd. All Level 8 parents and students will be invited to a meeting which will outline the Level 8 year and where students and parents will receive books and an information packet. Level 1 will begin the week of November 3rd. Parents will be invited to a meeting to get the overview of the year and the books for their child. Catechists are always needed to educate our children in the faith. We are especially in need of Level 2 Catechists in the Tackan and Mills Pond areas and Level 5 Catechists in the Branch Brook and Cayuga areas. Please call the Religious Education Office at 631-265-2200 ext. 12 for more information.
