Literary Element: Kennings

• The author uses kennings through this poem. A kenning is an imaginative metaphorical phrase used in place of a simple noun.

• Not very common in Modern English, but here are a few examples:– “gasoline guzzler”– “cancer stick”– “couch potato”– “tramp stamp”
