    Welcome to the 2010Oxford Careers Fair

    This new event, organised by the Careers Service, offers you the opportunity to find out about a varietyof different career options across a range of employment sectors from the Armed Services to ConsumerGoods. You will be able to meet a number of major recruiters keen to attract students and graduatesto their organisation, compare different organisations and find out about graduate and work experienceopportunities. Not all the recruiters participating in this event are giving a presentation in Oxford this year,so this may be your only chance to meet them informally.

    Panel Sessions:This year we have also organised an exciting range of talks which will run throughout the day and willgive insight and inspiration into careers in a variety of different areas. During these sessions, our invitedspeakers, many of whom are Oxford graduates, will talk about how they have developed their careers sincegraduating as well as providing you with their top tips on how to get into their role and sectors.     Bay FangVisiting Fellow, Reuters InstituteBay Fang is currently a visiting fellow at the Reuters Institute at Oxford, where she will be writing a paper onthe changing face of war correspondence. She spent the past year based in Afghanistan as a media advisorto the US government. Before that, she was the diplomatic correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, coveringforeign affairs and traveling with the Secretary of State. She was also an adjunct professor of journalism atGeorgetown University during this time.

    From 2002-2006 she was a correspondent-at-large for US News and World Report magazine, serving asthe magazines chief correspondent in Iraq in 2003-2004. She was one of the first journalists to be allowedinto the mountain training camps of the PKK, a Kurdish guerrilla movement designated by the US as aninternational terrorist organization. Prior to that she covered the war in Afghanistan, arriving just after thebombing campaign began in October 2001 and staying through summer 2002. She was one of a handfulof journalists to witness the Taliban uprising in Mazar-e-Sharif in December 2001.

    Bay was Beijing Bureau Chief for US News and World Report from 1998-2002. She won the Robert F.Kennedy award in 1999 for her story Chinas Stolen Wives, about women who are kidnapped and soldas wives in the Chinese countryside. Bay earned her undergraduate degree at Harvard University, was aFulbright scholar in Hong Kong, and holds a brown belt in kung fu.

    Daniel-Konrad CooperFilm Industr FreelancerSince graduating from Balliol in English in 2005, Daniel has worked in Film Production and Accounts, assisting

    Directors and Producers on Big Budget Studio Features and managing his own Independent Projects. Creditsinclude Stardust, Young Victoria and Red.

    Matt PicklesPress Officer, Universit of OxfordMatt graduated from The Queens College in 2009, where he read Modern History and Politics and foundeda satirical magazine called The Oxymoron. He then completed the National Council for Trainee Journalistsqualification (NCTJ) at Lambeth College and worked freelance as a news reporter for a number of

    newspapers, most recently The Sun. In June 2010 he returned to Oxford to work as a Press Officer for theUniversity, where he is responsible for humanities, museums and collections, buildings, libraries and sport .

    Tim RanceHead of Technolog , Lionhead Studios part of Microsoft Game Studios Lionhead Studios is the BAFTA-winning creator of the hit RPG Fable, and is part of Microsoft Game Studios.I studied Engineering and then Computer Science at Cambridge University and initially worked in theaerospace industry. I worked as a Technical Director at Electronic Arts as it set up in the UK and became afounder member of Lionhead in 1997.

    Evan InnisSoftware Developer, Ocado LtdEvan graduated magna cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earning simultaneousB.Sc. degrees in both Mathematics and Computer Science. After graduation, he worked as an intern forIBM/Lotus at IBMs software development campus in Westford, Massachusetts for 7 months beforecoming to St Edmund Hall, Oxford in autumn of 2007 where he completed an M.Sc. in Mathematics andthe Foundations of Computer Science. Since 2009 he has been employed by Ocados Technology groupwhere he works on their Supply Chain Systems team - building the applications that handle consumerdemand forecasting, automatic order generation, inbound delivery scheduling, and the general maintenanceof Ocados product catalogue and supplier network.

    Sarah NormanSarah has a Biological Sciences BSc (Edin) and a Neuroscience PhD (Camb). After her first postdoctoralposition at a stem cell company, she moved to Oxford for further postdoc work and a DepartmentalLectureship. Sarah has a strong interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. She is a CollegeLecturer at Trinity College and the Graduate Coordinator at the Gray Institute. She believes that we shouldbetter understand where our talents can lead us and possibly forsake the well-trodden path.

    Debbie McVittyDebbie McVitty has a BA in English from Queens University Belfast, and a Masters in Womens Studiesand a DPhil in English from the University of Oxford. Following two years working in postgraduate trainingfor Oxfords Humanities Division she joined the National Union of Students as a research and policy officer(postgraduates) in the Education and Quality team. Her role involves researching the student experience,policy work with national sector bodies and supporting students unions.

    Penny CoxPenny Cox studied Engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge from 2002-2006. During that time shealso took part in a year-long exchange program at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology in Boston,specialising in Structural Engineering. After a short stint working as a Structural Engineer after leavingCambridge, she decided she wanted a more commercial, people-facing role and applied to join the GraduateProgramme at LEK Consulting in London as an Associate. While at LEK, she worked on a variety of casesacross different sectors including Aviation, Finance, Retail and e-commerce, in analytical and managerialroles.

    In July 2009, Penny moved to Ocado to take on a strategy role in the Retail Division (covering Trading,Marketing and Supply Chain). Her work there has been varied, covering anything from analysing theeffectiveness of marketing campaigns and implementing strategic projects to preparing budgets andhelping to set targets for the department. In her spare time, Penny takes part in triathlons and plays netballin a London league.

    Richard Good (Matriculated 2003, St Edmund Hall, Engineering Science)I joined Unilever in 2003 on the Supply Chain graduate scheme working in four different areas of thebusiness within my first two years. I started by working as a project manager in the Marmite factory

    responsible for the build of a water treatment plant that converted the excess water from the productionprocess into clean water and biogas that could be burned to raise steam. My second placement was in thefoods head office forecasting volumes of Pot Noodle, Hellmanns Mayonnaise and Bertolli pasta sauces bytaking information from the customer teams on promotions and ensuring that the factories could meetdemand.

    I next was responsible for a production line that manufactured Impulse body spray ensuring the safemanufacture of the production plan and man management of the 12 operators and one apprentice whoworked on the line. My final placement in the scheme was working in the Global Engineering Excellenceteam that is responsible for sharing skills and techniques between all Unilever factories and developing andenforcing corporate policies. My first role after the graduate scheme was in the PG Tips factory managingthe ordering, installation and commissioning of a new production line and I have recently taken on thefurther responsibility of site services and other projects in the role of Engineering and Technical managersitting on the factory leadership team.

    Sian DaviesI studied History at Christ Church, and initially wanted to be a journalist. After doing substantial workexperience, however, I decided that it wasnt for me and so looked for other roles where I could encountera variety of people and be constantly learning. I applied to P&G after talking to a lot of people that workedthere, and started in marketing in September 2008. I work on Pringles now, managing all the UK marketing,

    with a multi-million pound budget. Its a constant challenge and very demanding but I absolutely love it.

    Jacqui IbbotsonProgramme Manager, Oxford InspiresJacqui has been working in the Arts sector for twenty-five years. She started her career in an actorsagency followed by a year with The Casting Company working in television and film. She changed to castingopera singers at the English National Opera in 1989 and then moved on to combine casting with planningat the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1992.

    Jacqui became Producer of The Bridewell Theatre in London in 1995 specialising in new music theatre and

    just before moving to Oxford, she was Director of Camberwell Arts Festival which specialised in Visualand Community Arts. She now uses this breadth of knowledge in her role of Programme Manager atOxford Inspires, the Cultural Development agency for Oxfordshire, in providing advice and support to artsorganisations, coordinating conferences, producing outdoor events and working to strengthen partnershipsbetween cultural organisations and schools in the county.

    Kelsey SmuldersLearning and Access Coordinator, National Centre for Citizenship & the LawThe NCCL works out of the Galleries of Justice Museum in Nottingham where Kelsey runs various Learning& Access projects. Before coming to the NCCL, she worked in Canada at the Gulf of Georgia CanneryNational Historic Site, a museum owned by Parks Canada. She has experience at the Manchester Museum,Astley Hall Museum & Gallery, the Richmond Museum, and the Museum of Anthropology. She holds aBA in Anthropology from UBC and completed an MA in Art Gallery & Museum Studies at the ManchesterMuseum.

    Rachel DuckerBritish contemporary artist, Rachel Ducker was originally trained as a jeweller. With an insatiable desire to

    Chris PhillipsPublishing Director, GTI MediaGTI is an international graduate careers publishing business with offices in nine countries. In the UK, wepublish magazines, directories, websites and events mostly under the TARGETjobs brand. There are about ahundred people working in our UK office: in editorial, design, events, sales, marketing and technical roles. Iam personally responsible for creating content across all media that is compelling and useful, working witha team of editors, designers and sales people. We recruit most of our people from the Oxford/Reading area mostly recent graduates for permanent or temporary work.

    Ruth CollierRuth Collier has been working in higher education communications for about ten years. As well as a brief period working in reference publishing, she has worked at the Universities and Colleges Admissions Servicedealing with applicant enquiries; and in Oxfords admissions office doing outreach work with schools,teachers, parents and careers advisers. She joined the press and information office at Oxford University in2003. She became deputy head of the office in 2006 and head of the office in 2007. Her degree was inEnglish at Oxford University.

    Nick EmmelNick left Oxford University with an MA and joined ad agency Bates Dorland in 1998. He then moved to TulloMarshall Warren in 2001 to manage the integrated launch of the new Nissan Primera and a whole host of award-winning campaigns for Guinness.

    After a stint as Digital Lead on the Yahoo! account at the integrated agency Maher Bird, Nick joined Dareas a Senior Planner in 2005. Working across a range of accounts including Sony Ericsson, Barclays andVodafone he was later promoted to Planning Director at the start of 2007. In October of that year, he wasalso made a member of the Board and was later promoted to Executive Planning Director in October 2009.

    Helen ShuteHead of Marketing and Supporter Development, National TrustA relatively recent recruit into the not for profit sector, Helen built her career in the Commercial world asa marketing (and later client service) specialist. Working across a variety of blue chip retailers and FMCGbusinesses including Boots, Halfords and Cadbury, Helen now leads the Marketing side of the new NationalTrust Consultancy in the Midlands, a role that encompasses volunteering, membership, marketing &communications, visitor experience, audience development and commercial strategies.

    David HuseHead of Volunteering at LOCOG (London Organising Committee for the Ol mpic Games)Prior to taking on his current role earlier this year, David worked at LOCOG (London Organising Committeefor the Olympic Games) and prior to that was a Sales and Marketing Director for three American consumergoods businesses; Procter and Gamble, Heinz and PepsiCo.     Vicky HemmingExecutive Director, People, Development and Governance, RNID (Ro al National Institute forDeaf People)Since 2003 Vicky has been the Executive Director, People, Development and Governance for RNID,responsible for 1,100 staff based throughout the UK and a national network of 5,000 volunteers.Before RNID she worked for The Princes Trust and before that in a broad range of organisations includingbroadcasting and finance, but always within HR. She is a founding Director of CharityWorks and a Trusteeof Phoenix Futures, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation charity.

    ACEVO is the national representative body for leaders of non-profit organisations in the UK, with over2,000 members. We work to influence Government policy on their behalf, as well as organising eventsand training for non-profit leaders.     Oxford Hub is the focal point for charitable activity at Oxford University.
