Teach your child how to use the telephone. S/he should be taught to remember the emergency

phone number ‘911’and ‘0’ for the operator. Make sure you teach each number separately. For

example, say “nine-one-one” and not “nine-eleven.” There will be less confusion for the child

when dialing 911 in a real emergency. You and your child can practice on the imaginary phone

numbers below. However, for children to thoroughly understand this concept, it is best to

teach them on the actual phone. Make sure your child knows what an emergency is, when to

use 911 and when not to use it. Just to be safe, a list of emergency phone numbers posted by

the telephone is always a great safety tool in any home emergency.

Note: Also make sure your child knows how to use your cell phone.
