On The Way

The Mass in Slowest Motion: Anamnesis and Types The first section of the Roman Canon after the

Consecration is the Anamnesis – the solemn remembering of past events. The words express the saving events that have been made present sacramentally (under the form of bread and wine) on the altar: we celebrate the memorial of the blessed Passion, the Resurrection from the dead, and the glorious Ascension into heaven of Christ, your Son, our Lord… In short, it is no long-er bread and wine but the living Christ – crucified, risen, and ascended – now present on the altar.

The next line expresses this profound truth: Christ not only sacrificed Himself for us but also entrusted His sacrifice to us. He both redeems us and enables us to participate in the very act of our own redemption. This is our role at Mass, to unite ourselves with Christ in His offering to the Father. Thus the prayer continues: [W]e, your servants and your holy people, offer to your glorious majesty from the gifts that you have given us, this pure victim, this holy victim, this spot-less victim, the holy Bread of eternal life and the Chalice of everlasting salvation.

The priest then invokes three Old Testament figures or “types.” They are foreshadowings or prefigurements of Christ’s sacrifice. Old Testament types have both a similarity and a dissimilarity with their New Testament fulfillments. From them we see how God both fulfills and transcends His promises. By pointing back to them we say, in effect, “Those were images of Christ’s sacrifice. Just as you accepted those offerings, so now accept even more this offering of Christ.”

The first reference is to God’s first acceptance of a sacrifice. Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a serene and kindly countenance, and to accept them, as once you were pleased to accept the gifts of your servant Abel the just… (cf. Gen 4:1-4). Abel was a shepherd who offered the firstlings of his flock to God. He thus points us to the Good Shepherd, Who offers to the Father not just the firstlings but His very self.

Second, the priest invokes the sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith. The sacrifice referred to here is the “binding of Isaac” (cf. Gen 22; not the video game!), when God mysteriously commanded Abraham to offer up his only son. Abraham mysteriously trusted, saying, God will provide. Just as Abraham offered his only son, so now we ask the Father to receive the sacrifice of His only-begotten Son. Just as Abraham trusted that God will provide, so we trust that He will do so abundantly.

Finally, the priest prays that our offering be accepted as was the offering of [the] high priest Melchizedek, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim. Melchizedek is a mysterious figure in Scripture, and this line refers to his brief appearance in Gen-esis 14. He serves as a type of Christ because he is king of salem – that is, king of peace – and he offers bread and wine. That account of him points to the definitive King Who establishes peace through the offering of bread and wine that have become His own Body and Blood.

Stewardship The Gift of Time, Talent, Treasure

2020 Fund-A-Cause – Promethean ActivPanel Titanium At the final virtual auction, the PTO raised $16,000 for this year’s Fund-A-Cause. The money will be used to replace the school’s existing active boards with new ActivPanels from Promethean If you are interested in helping please donate via our General School Support link and write “Active Boards” in the comments section via this link: https://membership.faithdirect.net/givenow/VA50/8181 Or contact Kathleen Anderson at [email protected]

Thank you for your support via Faith Direct At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of you asked how to best contribute your weekly offertory during the suspension of public masses. While many options existed, the best one at that time was online giving via Faith Direct. Thanks to your generosity and support, enrollment in Faith Direct has increased by almost 20%, ensuring a steady stream of offertory for St. James Parish during this time of crisis. If you would like to enroll in or learn more about Faith Direct, please go to: https://membership.faithdirect.net/VA50

Thank you for Your Overall Support During the Pandemic: In addition to our new Faith Direct donors, we were deeply touched by the continuous support we received from our parishioners who donated their time, talent and treasure in order to keep the doors of St. James Parish open during COVID-19. You faithfully mailed in you weekly offertory with notes of encouragement and promises of prayers. You volunteered your time and talents to ensure that others could attend adoration, confession, Communion Services and eventually public Mass. You worked tirelessly to bring food to those in need and to even keep our famous “Fish Fry Frydays” going during Lent. Saint James Parish is truly a special community. Thank you again for your faithful support! In case you missed it, please see Father Scalia’s special Constant Contact on his gratitude for his flock’s amazing generosity and goodness during the pandemic: To sign up for Constant Contact, email: [email protected].

Arlington Catholic Herald Diocesan Newspaper Please consider making a donation in support of our diocesan newspaper. The Arlington Catholic Herald is an award-winning newspaper that is offered free to our parishioners. The subscriptions are paid for by each individual parish. Your gift helps to offset these costs. The recommended donation is $17.00 and can be given via cash, personal check or Faith Direct. Thank you for your support!

Clara Moschella—2020 Sister Helen Maureen, IHM Award Winner

Each year, the faculty of Saint James Catholic School presents the Msgr. Paul V. Heller/Sister Helen Maureen, IHM award. These awards recognize two eighth grade students – a boy and a girl – who have shown excellence in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in their daily interactions with students, teachers, and staff. This year, Clara Moschella won the Sister Helen Maureen, IHM Award. The youngest daughter of William and Amy Moschella, Clara has two older siblings, Matthew and Emily, and a younger brother, Nathan, who is a rising 6th grader at St. James. A student at Saint James since kindergarten, Clara volunteered at Christ House, served as Secretary of the Student Council, and was a peer tutor with the National Junior Honor Society. She also swims competitively, leading Sister Melissa to remark that “Clara would arrive at school with a smile on her face and goggle marks around her eyes.”

What are your favorite subject(s)? “I enjoy many subjects, especially Math and Social Studies. I really enjoyed Sister Melissa’s English & Language Arts class.” What is your favorite memory? “I really love Spirit Day. There’s no pressure. It’s just a day for having fun with your friends and teachers. Performing the dances was so much fun!” What will you miss most? “I will miss just coming here in the morning and seeing everyone. It’s crazy in the morning but fun. It’s a chance say ‘hello’ and talk before the day begins”. What sets Saint James apart from other schools? “I know more about my religion than I would if I had attended a public school. I know what I believe in. I like that it is part of school – not separate from it.” What did you learn during the COVID-19 quarantine? “That I didn’t hate going to school! I missed not seeing my teachers and classmates. The teachers were very encouraging and supportive during the quarantine.” What is your parting advice to younger students? “Don’t be afraid to talk, especially in class. Don’t talk out of turn (raise your hand) but add to the discussion. I got to know Sister Melissa because I wasn’t afraid to talk. Don’t be afraid to be social. Reach out to others.” We wish Clara the best of luck in her high school studies at Georgetown Visitation. She will be in our prayers! Next week, we will profile Andrew “Drew” LeNard, this year’s Msgr. Paul V. Heller winner, so stay tuned!

Confirmation 2020

This year’s Confirmation Mass was to have been in March, but the COVID-19 Pandemic made that impossible, so the event was rescheduled for late June and early July—June 23, 24, 26, 27, and July 7 and 11, to make it possible for all 153 of our Confirmands to be Confirmed in a safe manner in accordance with government regulations. Below are some pictures from Groups One and Two. Pictures from Groups Three and Four will be in the July 12 edition.

May God Bless our Confirmands!

WorkCamp 2020

Each year, the Diocese of Arlington’s WorkCamp program “is a week-long experience providing the Diocese’s teens with an opportunity to encounter Christ through service, faith, and fellowship.” WorkCamp usually means a week away from the Parish for our team, but this year, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, WorkCamp was a local affair. Students worked both on the Saint James School playground, and at a local house. They built a “mud kitchen” at the playground for our incoming Saint James Pre-Schoolers, and did home repair and other carpentry projects around the house. On Wednesday, June 24, Bishop Burbidge dropped by the house to meet with and bless our young people. Here are some pictures:

Thank You!

God Bless Each Of You!

Dan Day Says Good-Bye to St. James

My very dear friends at Saint James, The opportunity to share a few words with you regarding my imminent retirement is greatly appreciated. Know that I write with a heart full of gratitude to Almighty God for the many graces bestowed upon me during my thirty years as organist and music director for Saint James Parish. God’s many blessings certainly include you, the priests, deacons, sisters and lay, faithful of Saint James. It is ironic that, initially, I had agreed to provide organ music for four Masses on the weekend of

June 23-24, 1990. After the last Mass that Sunday, the pastor asked me if I would consider coming back to play the next weekend. Thirty years later, that question has been answered finally! My service to our Lord and to all of you has included some exceedingly rare privileges. I think initially of the once in a lifetime opportunity to have been delegated the responsibility of overseeing the choice and installation of a new pipe organ in 1992. The organ was a gift of a generous choir member in memory of her family as well as in gratitude for the 100th anniversary of Saint James Parish. Knowing that this instrument will support the worship of God for years to come is a great conso-lation for me. I have wonderful memories of the Masses for the hundred year anniversary celebration in 1992 as well as for the celebration of the 125th anniversary of Saint James Parish in 2017 During this time period, the choir and parish also celebrated significant anniversaries of priestly ordination for Monsignor Cosby, Fathers O’Brien, Majka, and Posey. Another gift at Saint James has been the opportunity to have provided music for all seven sacraments of the Church as well as for First Masses following priestly ordinations. But as with many other dimensions of life, our daily and weekly commitments constitute the ordinary flow of our lives. So, it is with Church musicians. Week in and week out, I have been edified by the reverent, active participation of so many in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Participation in Holy Mass on the part of the congregation and parish musicians has been exemplary and inspiring. The dedication of our choir members, song leaders/cantors, and instrumentalists has enabled Saint James to develop a fine liturgical music program. I am particularly grateful to Brian Gendron who has so skillfully served as choir director for our wonderful traditional adult choir these past several years. Likewise, we should all be grateful to Natalie Lauby Keffalas who while teaching music in our school has developed and

Dan Day Says Good-Bye to St. James (Cont.) directed the Children’s Choir. Both she, Brian and other choir members have generously shared their gifts as vocalists during these years as well. I also want to thank Betty Pitera, who has contributed so much to Saint James as a skilled and dedicated musician long before 1990 and continuing into the present. She has always supported me and has been willing to play the organ whenever needed. In the days ahead, I hope to be able to personally thank so many of you have been so kind to me through the years. So, I retire with a heart full of gratitude, but also with some sadness. I will certainly miss all of you, the choir and musicians have been like a family to me, as they are such good-hearted, generous, and dedicated people! My fellow employees of Saint James, particularly the parish office staff, have all been so kind and helpful through the years. Saint James is also blessed with many dedicated volunteers, committed to so many ministries, apostolates, and always so helpful. During a recent conversation with Father Scalia, I had mentioned that Sunday mornings will never be the same after retirement. I began my service as an organist for Sunday Masses as a high school sophomore in August 1968. For the ensuing decades, except for a few brief periods, I consistently have provided organ music for Sunday (and other) liturgies. Asked about my plans in retirement, my reply has been that they are “fluid.” A good start would be going through unopened boxes at home, some untouched since my move to Maryland in 1997! More realistically, I hope to catch up on reading, volunteering, doing some travel, and after a rest, eventually substituting as organist from time to time. I also hope to spend more time visiting my sister and her family in Maine, with hopes of being able to spend Christmas with them after all these years of being unable to do so. Now I do have a couple of requests for you. First, please keep me in your prayers as I will keep you in mine. Second, please nurture any talents and interest on the part of others in liturgical music, particularly the young. It is a great joy for me to have encouraged the musical interest of at least two young parishioners, Natalie Keffalas (mentioned above), and JJ Mitchell. Just a few years ago, while in the eighth grade at Saint James, JJ played a meditation piece on the organ for the first time at a 10:30am Mass. This fall, approximately eleven years later, he will enter the DMA (doctoral music) program in Houston, Texas. For the future of Church music, all of us need to nurture the similar talents, interests, and generosity of our young people. I will be forever grateful to my parents, relatives, parishioners, parish priests, and religious sisters for having encouraged my interest in church music so many years ago. Otherwise, I would never have had the blessings of these past 30 years with you at Saint James. May God continue to bless us in the days ahead!

Rectory Ramblings If you haven’t tuned in yet to catch “Rectory Ramblings,” St. James’ very own theological talk-show, you are missing out. Every Monday and Friday evenings at 8:00pm, Father Scalia and Father Oetjen, along with special guests at times, answer your questions about our faith. From what is the role of Guardian Angels, to why God just didn’t kill Satan, to why are prayers so long; they tackle them all. One of the most recent episodes, #26, featured our own Father Joseph Vu talking about his escape from Vietnam, a fascinating and epic story. To catch Rectory Ramblings live, visit https://www.stjamescatholic.org/current-events/rectory-ramblings. The archive of episodes is also at that address so that you can binge-watch all the past episodes as well.

If you have a question for Rectory Ramblings, please send it to: [email protected] and I will send it on to the good Fathers for their show.

WMET 'Fishers of Men' Dinner Will Honor Bishop Burbidge—August 20

Guadalupe Radio Network, working with the Diocese of Arlington, has announced Thursday, August 20, 2020, as the new date for its 'Fishers of Men' Dinner. The network will host this event aligned with all civil and diocesan health protocols. At Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, WMET will honor Bishop Michael F. Burbidge for his works of evangelization. Fr. Hezekias Carnazzo, founder of the Institute of Catholic Culture and the 2012 'Fishers of Men' Award Winner, will be keynote speaker.

The annual dinner supports WMET 1160 AM and 103.1 FM (Falls Church), in the Guadalupe Radio Network, Radio for Your Soul! The ten-year-old Catholic radio station, the first in the National Capital Region, draws people closer to Christ and His Church by providing hope, inspiration, and the true teachings of our Faith, wherever the listener is on his or her journey. WMET's signal reaches 6.5 million souls in four (arch)dioceses. Guadalupe Radio Network also is celebrating its 20th anniversary as a network; it is EWTN's largest radio affiliate. To learn more about the dinner, call 877-646-1160 or visit GRNonline.com and click on the “Events” tab for details.

Church’s Main Front Doors Rejuvenated During the COVID-19 crisis, we have been busy with maintenance programs around St. James to preserve our Church’s beauty, and our campuses appearances. One of these projects involved rejuvenating the appearance of our Church’s front doors, and it was a success. Below, to the left is a picture of what the main doors used to look like, and, to the right, what they look like now. We will continue with projects all summer long and keep you updated as we go.
