Story and photo by Celeste LodewykFrom Page 1. Neroli and Peter are cur-

rently in Perth, Australia attending the annual Justice International Conference which runs from March 8-11.

A first for Australia, this event brings together international and national experts in justice, forensic science, law, law enforcement, criminal psychology and criminology who have been involved in both prosecutions and exonerations.

One key note speaker at this conference is New Zealand’s David Bain who is speaking publicly for the first time about his experience.

Others include Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, whose baby daughter Azaria famously disappeared near Alice Springs, Dr Rubin ‘Hur-ricane’ Carter, an American boxer who was wrongly con-victed of a triple homicide and Betty Anne Waters, an American pub waitress who put herself through law school to exonerate her jailed brother.

Of particular interest to Neroli and Peter will be a discussion on the Criminal Case Investigation Commission in Western Australia, something they are campaigning to have introduced to NZ.

Jaden and his friend Phillip Johnston were both convicted and sentenced to six years’ jail, of which they served nine and a half months before being released on bail and granted a retrial by the Court of Appeal.

The retrial began January 6, 2006 but a mistrial was ruled after three days after the Police prosecution “found” a file of persons of interest that should have been released to the defense counsel before the first trial.

Jaden and Phillip were set separate trial dates. Phillip was acquitted and found not guilty of setting the fire in August 2006, and Jaden’s charge of aiding and abetting as party to arson was dismissed in February 2007.

Believing their son was innocent from the beginning, Neroli and Peter had fought the Justice system by car-rying out their own investigation in order to prove Jaden’s and Phillip’s innocence.

“We had to engage a private investi-gator, an expert witness on identifica-tion and source information from the fire service ourselves.

“What we found was that in the courtroom the pros-ecution do not rely on firm evidence and the truth to show guilt, they use every trick of stage management, bold theatrics and manipula-tion of any evidence to convince a jury that their version of events is the only one to believe,” Neroli said.

“We are so very sad that a justice system we naively believed in can be so flawed, and I find myself repeating; what a waste of time!

“A waste of time and money, a waste of three years in two young lives and all avoidable if some Police had just done a fair and proper job from the start,” Peter added.

Last May marked the end of Jaden’s seven and a half year battle when he was awarded compensation.

Former Justice Minister Simon Power also personally apologised to Jaden and his

family at his office in parliament, making Jaden the first in NZ to have received this form of apology.

Following the apology, Neroli and Peter discussed with the minister about having a separate commission introduced to NZ, similar to Western Australia’s Criminal Case Investigation Commission.

“We need someone outside of the justice system to deal with cases similar to Jaden’s, but Mr Power dismissed it saying he didn’t think it was the right thing to do for NZ.

“We have never been involved in criminal law before so we have had to learn so much throughout our journey with Jaden.

“This is why we are strong advocates for anyone in a similar situation and are push-ing for a commission to be introduced to NZ, a big reason for us to attend the Justice International Conference,” Neroli said.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk“It’s just hair, it will grow back.”Callum (Boom) MacDonald is nervously

anticipating the Shave Marlborough event at the end of this month, as he will be shaving his head, beard and possibly his eyebrows.

“If I get enough sponsorship money I might be persuaded to lose the eyebrows, much to the annoyance of some people,” he jokes.

He began growing his hair three years ago and his beard last year.

“It was something different to do and at least I can tell my kids that their dad was cool once,” he jokes.

Callum is one of a growing number of people who are signing up to shave their heads, an event organised by local couple Leanne and

Scott Palatchie for March 31.The couple organised their first shave-off

event last year in support of the Cancer Founda-tion where Scott had his head shaved.

But Leanne says this year she won’t just be watching, she will be participating by having her own pony tail cut off after nine years of growing her hair.

Leanne will also be joined by friend Amanda who will also have her pony tail cut off.

“We have organised it in a way that it’s not as daunting for women to take part, so instead of shaving their heads they can have their pony tails cut off,” Leanne says.

The Shave Marlborough event has already been met with immense community support.

The Clubs of Marlborough have generously

donated the venue and Beyond the Fringe Hair Design is providing hair stylists.

The event will be held from 2pm-4:30pm and will be run as a fun family event with kids’ entertainment, live music and raffles on the day.

The cost is only $10 per entrant and the community is encouraged to get behind the ‘shavees’ by making a donation.

Sponsorship forms for entrants are available at Custom Copy, Secret Garden Café, Clubs of Marlborough and the Sun office.

Donation boxes will also be placed at Fair-weathers on Scott, Chantilly Café, Redwood Tavern, Custom Copy, The Fix Cafe and Secret Garden Café.

For online donations visit www.shavefora-cure.co.nz and search for Shave Marlborough.

Blenheim business Accessman Blenheim has introduced a new piece of machinery to its range, a new generation of environmen-tally conscious work platforms that is the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Accessman and Nifty Lift are proud to announce the latest in a revolutionary line of machinery -- Hybrid Technology Self Pro-pelled Knucklebooms.

The ‘4x4 HR17 Hybrid Self Propelled Knuckleboom’ arrived in Blenheim early February and already there has been a lot of interest, say owners Colin and Jenny.

“The feedback from users has been really positive,” says Colin.

Accessibility to tall structures and tight spaces such as in the wineries and high buildings for maintenance or painting can be made quicker, easier, safer and more cost effective by using this machine.

It is specifically designed for those hard to reach spots, little in-terference to its surroundings and is also environmentally friendly.

What makes this machine ap-pealing is its ability to become ‘zero emission’, making it ideal for inside use or in any environ-ment, while offering a clean and quiet solution to your access requirements.

On Hybrid power the machine allows the electric motor to auto-matically assist the diesel engine when required (e.g. a steep slope climb) boosting the overall power available.

At all other times the electric motor channels the excess power from the diesel engine back to the batteries, storing it for when it’s needed the most.

This in turn allows the machine to work off a much smaller diesel engine, resulting in a lower fuel consumption.

Its unique SiOPS safety system and ToughCage technology is another exciting feature, prevent-ing injury if an operator is for any reason pushed against the cage controls.

“SiOPS eliminates sustained involuntary operation of the machinery by shutting itself down and stopping machine movement, which is a really important aspect of its design,” Colin says.

The new ToughCage technology is an impact resistant composite base and larger cross-section steel cage which gives extra strength and durability, protecting the operator and reducing the risk of damage to the cage.

For more information about the 4x4 HR17 Hyrbid Self Propelled Knuckleboom contact Colin and Jenny at Accessman Blenheim.

success can be achieved in hard times.“I’m very proud of the team, it’s a

big effort, especially in a particularly hard year when stock had been hard to come by with the Japanese earthquake and stock supplies were affected by floods in Thailand.”

He said it was a great acknowledg-ment for the staff that a rural dealer-ship can achieve a national award.

Mr McDermid’s son Scott, who is Blenheim Toyota’s new and used ve-hicle sales manager, was also officially awarded his Advanced Diploma of Management.

The diploma, achieved through the Australian Institute of Management, was sponsored by Toyota Finance and took two years to complete.

Mr McDermid said his sales team were “pretty stoked” when they found out.

“Nothing happens in a new vehicle franchise until you sell a car. Every-thing hinges on selling.”

The sizeable trophy will have “pride of place” at the reception area.

Shirley O’Connor will be sharing a family journey of tragedy and grief, through art.

She will be expressing the aftermath of the Mt Erebus disaster of November 1979, which claimed the lives of 257 people, including Shirley’s husband Ian and brother Ron-nie, through art.

The Blenheim artist with her eldest daughter were success-ful in the ballot to participate in the commemorative visit to Mt Erebus on February 16

last year. This journey was to bring a

sense of relief and understand-ing of that tragic event of 1979.

As a pictorial record of this journey, Shirley - working from her studio in Blenheim - has painted 15 watercolours, the body of this work being this exhibition which will be held at the Saffron Gallery of Art, 300 Hilton Highway, Timaru from Friday 16th March to 20th April 2012, 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

It will be a memorable week for Blenheim’s Korean War Vets Association.

A number of Ambassador of Peace Medals are being presented to residents in rest homes this week, and the main presentation takes place on Sunday at the Marlborough RSA.

There are currently 19 Korean Vet members in the area this year, compared to 52 members in 1993.

By Annabelle LatzCorey Rowlings left behind a sentimental

symbol during his epic six day kayak effort in the Marlborough Sounds recently, in a bid to raise money for Marlborough St John.

He paddled into Havelock last Thursday, after five nights and six days on the water and in the bush from Anakiwa.

His third day was the most memorable, not just because it was the longest and he almost capsized twice, but also because he lost his engagement ring.

“I felt it wasn’t there that evening, and looked down and thought oh bummer!”

Corey’s partner Stella came to meet me at Titirangi Bay that evening.

“Stella said she’d rather have me standing there without the ring, than not have me standing there at all.”

That day had involved nearly nine hours on the water, paddling around Cape Jackson and Cape Lambert.

“The word capsize went through my head far too many times, I almost went under twice!”

Corey’s daily progress of the trip could

be followed on line, with the loan of a Spot Tracker, local man Ben McAlpine lent him, which Corey was very grateful for.

“It was a great personal challenge, after last February when Stella was injured when swimming in the Sounds, and St John were so good to us.”

So far Corey has raised $1550 for Marlborough St John, and his donation link will be open for another few weeks. To help Corey out, visit www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/coreyrawlings/

He said the mental preparation and recovery was just as much a challenge as the physical preparation.

“The blisters are settling down, but I’m finding out about mental recovery, and my mind keeps going back to the trip.”

He loved spending time with his camera lens and the wild life like turtles, seals, octopus, stingrays and bird life.

Corey also commented on what fantastic form the DOC huts were in, and the clean state of the beaches.

“There was hardly a spec of rubbish.”

Dear Ed,I draw your attention to a mistake in

the front page story in The Sun of Feb 29th about the Wine and Food Festival.

The Festival has not been going for 29 years and in fact has been going for only 28 years.

This is a mistake that has been ongo-ing since an over zealous organiser way back sneaked it up from the 20th to the 21st festival because they wanted a better promotional angle.

Refer to page 226 of the Marlborough Celebrating 150 years, a second edition of which is soon to be released, for the Festival facts..

It is time that the Wine and food Com-

mittee actually got them right. It is all documented in written fact and

local accountant Bob Marks has written about it as part of the Fundraiser for the Civic Theatre.

Malcolm Aitken was also heavily involved.

I also covered the 1st festival as a photographer for the Marlborough Express and that was February 1985.

Work it out!I do so detest it when new comers to

the area try to change historical fact to suit themselves.

Good luck with the Friday Sun. Graham H. BrooksRenwick.

Autumn prediction for Marlborough, according to the NIWA National Climate Centre:

A mature La Niña event in the tropical Pacific should be gone by Easter.

Autumn, March to May, indicates cooler than usual seas around New Zealand, and a somewhat stormy Tasman Sea.

Lower pressures than normal are expected over the Tasman Sea for March to May as a whole, resulting in more frequent northeast winds than usual.

Autumn temperatures are likely to be average or below average.

Rainfall is likely to be normal or above normal.Soil moisture levels are projected to be normal or

above normal.

Dear Ed,It still astounds me how some busi-

nesses around town do not support each other.

I take note of who supports my busi-ness and therefore support them back as much as possible.

It’s only fair and the right thing to do surely?

Wake up and keep buying locally. We all want Blenheim to thrive and

we all want to stay in business. So think about it!Grace

There have been complaints from locals of an increase in cockroaches.

While Marlborough District Council spokesper-son Julianna Dilrew said they have not received any calls, a caller to The Sun was worried about the bugs.

The caller said a friend had come home to find two on her couch and one on her bed.

Ms Dilrew said the roaches were probably the Gisbourne cockroach, which has been in the area for a number of years.

Have you seen this critter?

Old boat sheds in the Picton Harbour are being demolished as part of a four-stage redevelopment.

P roject s Manager for Por t Marlborough Rose Prendeville said the boat sheds were built in the mid-1960s, which makes them around 50 years old.

“It was getting to the stage where we had to stop using them; they just had to come down.”

The 38 sheds are owned by Port Marlborough and were leased to individuals, who “have been aware for a number of years that redevelopment of the marina was imminent”.

The boat sheds are not being re-placed.

The boat shed removal is part of stage two, although stage three will also see a further block of boat sheds removed.

Ms Prendeville said stage two should be finished by spring and also involves expansion of the western edge of the marina basin, realignment of the marina roadway, installation of a water-side pedestrian boardwalk and construction of three new jetties.

Port Marlborough is currently in consultation with Council, groups and neighbours regarding stage three, but some of the plans include a new toilet block, continuation of the boardwalk and a new launching ramp.

Friday March 9, 201212 gardeningthis week

Story and photo by Stephanie ChoateJulie Murphy leans over a bed of snowy white and soft

pink geraniums in Pollard Park, rapidly plucking dead blossoms with deft gloved fingers.

A pile of faded blossoms, fallen leaves, and clippings fills a nearby tractor, as a group of gardeners toil in the continual task of keeping Blenheim’s parks beautiful.

Murphy has worked in the town gardens for nearly 25 years, part of the eight-person team behind the vibrant flowers and shady lawns of Seymour Square and Pollard Park.

“It’s all a team effort,” she said. “Working in a team with talented gardeners is a great

advantage.”The gardeners put more than 30,000 annuals in the

ground each year in two plantings. As winter frosts begin to claim the summer blooms in

April, they will uproot them and fill the beds with violas, calendulas, poppies and pansies.

Murphy said she likes the fresh start of a new season. “My favorite part is probably ripping out the old flowers and starting over. It’s nice to get a change,” she said.

Town gardeners brighten Blenheim

Cutting off dead blossoms and clearing debris from around plants are vital steps as the changing seasons bring cooler weather, making plants more susceptible to diseases.

Removing dead growth improves air circulation and encourages the plant to send out new blooms.

“It really helps prolong the life of our

annuals,” she said.Murphy also suggests cutting back a bit

on watering, and applying a liquid feed this time of year.

Once the gardeners finish deadheading the annual beds, they’ll move on to prun-ing the camellias and rhododendrons. Between pruning, weeding, raking and digging, there’s plenty to keep them busy.

Murphy said the parks provide a refuge where residents can come to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.

“It’s peaceful, it’s pretty, it’s private,” she said, gazing down to the willow-lined stream at Pollard Park, where two young children were tossing bits of bread to paddling ducks.

“It’s a really good place.”

Marlborough District Council gardeners Julie Murphy (left) and Gavin Smith work in the flowerbeds at Pollard Park.

Forget about slug bait, let me introduce…beer bait!

Simply, cut the top off an empty fizzy drink bottle, leaving approxi-mately 10cm of plastic from the lid.

Make sure the lid is tightly screwed on.

Make a hole next to your lettuces large enough for the whole bottle neck to fit into.

The open end of your plastic bottle should sit almost parallel with the soil.

Place three sticks approximately 15cm in height around your plastic bottle in the shape of a teepee.

Fill your bottle up to the halfway mark with beer (slugs aren’t fussy about the type of beer, but kids make

sure you ask your parents first!).To ensure that the beer is protected

from rain, take the discarded end of your plastic fizzy drink bottle and cut off a section approximately 5cm from the end.

Balance this section on the three sticks you staked earlier.

This will create a lid to protect the beer against rain.

Now all you have to do is sit back and wait. Overnight the slugs will slide their way into the beer.

And don’t just stop with one beer bait bottle, make several and place them around your slug susceptible veges.

You’ll be amazed by the results.

There’s not much to planting Madam Butterfly antir-rhinums, otherwise known as snapdragons.

They come in a range of colours, grow to around 75cm high and will flower in about six to eight weeks from planting.

They grow nicely with wallflowers and polyanthus because they like the same sunny, well-drained, but cold conditions.

Plant the seedlings in groups – around 20-40cm apart from each other – and the plants will support each other as they grow. Limit your watering and ensure you water the base of the plants rather than the flowers to avoid the spread of diseases.

And remember to deadhead the plants to prolong their flowering.

Stand by your snapdragon

Stop slugs in their slime

A new interactive module has been launched to help peo-ple practice the new Give Way rules, and can be accessed at www.giveway.co.nz.

The rules will change as of 5am on the 25th March.

eDrive Solutions have built an interac-tive online practice tool, which is designed to assist people to understand the rules easily, and test them-selves on the change.

It is freely available to all New Zealanders, and is supported by NZTA and ACC, as well as Bridgestone, Suzuki and BP.

Cards with more information and the URL can be picked up at any BP Connect store.

The practice scenari-os show real-life inter-section scenes filmed in Hamilton, and the user sits behind a vir-tual dashboard, from where they make their decision on how they would act in a given

situation. eDrive Solutions, the

makers of the module, have been involved in the road safety arena a long time.

Their core training programme can be ac-cessed at www.edrive.co.nz and is free to all learner drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 who are members of Practice, an NZTA initiative to

encourage new driv-ers to get plenty of practice.

Robert Isler, CEO of eDrive Solutions says the road toll in New Zealand is simply too high and his goal is to make a difference.

He and his daugh-ter Nadine Isler head up the project, with a goal of making New Zealand’s roads safer for everyone.

Exhibition sites are nearing full occupancy for the 44th New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays. A total of 98% of all sites at Fieldays have been acquired by agricultural related businesses, who understand the significance of exhibiting at the iconic event.

Outdoor agricultural sites are 99% occupied and the sought-after indoor Mystery Creek Pavilion is fully subscribed.

The popular Kiwi’s Best Mar-quee situated within this area is completely sold out with companies

showcasing their quality food and beverage products. In addition to these quality food sites, celebrity chefs will demonstrate delicious ways to use exhibitors’ premium products in the Kiwi’s Best Kitchen Theatre.

Other areas of interest during Fiel-days include the pioneering Ag Art Wear and Innovation competitions.

The Ag Art Wear wearable arts competition is currently seeking talented designers to construct extremely creative and unique gar-ments derived from rural products.

The Innovation Competition pow-ered by the University of Waikato, is also searching for innovative entries. The supreme Innovation award, the esteemed Golden Stand-ard, recognises backyard agricul-tural inventions or improvements which have the potential to enhance farming practices.

New Zealand National Agricul-tural Fieldays will be held 13-16 June 2012 at Mystery Creek south of Hamilton.

Marlborough’s Leading Stainless Steel Fabricator

By Annabelle LatzRural Marlborough has its fair

share of challenges just like the rest of rural New Zealand, but is in a good position to cope with them.

“The community I’m working with is very proactive,” said Michael Ben-nett, Federated Farmers Regional Policy Advisor for Marlborough, West Coast, Nelson, Golden Bay and North Canterbury.

He has been involved with the rural Marlborough community for three months now, a change of scene from Southland, and his first impressions of this region have been positive.

He said people are proactive, pragmatic and sensible, which comes down to strong leadership, both from local council and the farming community.

The biggest project on his agenda so far has been the Outstanding Natural Features and Landscapes, a section of the Resource Management Act which often causes confusion and heated discussions.

Michael said landscapes are con-stantly changing due to differing farming methods.

“Land use has always changed, and always will.”

He said good communication is a vital tool for land users and local bodies, so decisions can be made regarding what natural features and

landscapes need to be protected. “The ONL is extremely compli-

cated; legally, emotionally, and politically.”

The original aim of the ONL was to protect land from inappropriate development.

“There was always an assump-tion that the Government would provide clarification of this part of the RMA.”

Michael believes the Marlborough District Council is taking a consul-tative approach with land users to work through the issues involved with the ONL.

Issues involve working through property rights, managing the costs involved with work on land to help protect it, and not disrupting farm-ing practices.

“We are still in the very early stages. Conversations need to take place and I hope it is done in good faith.”

Michael works alongside groups including Forest and Bird, Fish and Game, MDC and Department of Conservation.

“My job is to try and understand the process of what happens to who.”

He is positive that as long as strong communication continues, compli-cated issues like landuse and land protection can be solved effectively.

Women wanting to promote their small rural business will need to get their entries in soon for the RWNZ Enterprising Rural Woman Award 2012.

This is the fourth year for the competition, and entries close next Friday, March 16.

Past winners have included an an-imal homeopathy business, a farm walk and home-stay enterprise, a forestry trucking company, and a children’s merino sock producer.

Last year’s supreme winner was cheese maker from The Marlborough Sounds Lisa Harper, of Sherrington Grange Limited.

The RWNZ Enterprising Rural Women Awards 2012 are open to small businesses with 10 full-time staff or less that have been

operating for at least two years. If in partnership, women must be an active partner of 50 per cent or more.

Past entrants are welcome to re-enter.

There are three award categories: the Telecom North Island Award, the Access Homehealth South Is-land Award, and new this year, the Fly Buys Online Business Award.

Each category winner will re-ceive $1000 and a trophy, and will go on to compete for the Supreme Award 2012, which will be announced at the Rural Women New Zealand national conference in Hawera on May 21.

Entry forms and further informa-tion can be found on the website www.ruralwomen.org.nz.

The troublesome Moth Plant is in flower in Blenheim at the moment.

With toxic properties, and the natural aggression to choke nearby vegetation, bio security officers at Marlborough District Council want to destroy them now.

Bio security officer of plants Rob Simons said the officers have looked at all known sites in Blenheim, and will now carry on to the surveillance phase.

“We check down wind from known sites, where we often find new plants.”

The plant will start to produce seeds very soon, so need to be destroyed before this happens.

“We will destroy them free of charge, just ring us up and we will come around.”

If you see a moth plant on your property, please call 574 2300, and ask for a bio security officer.

Spray misuse investigatedZespri will test every kiwifruit orchard in the

country to ensure desperate growers have not misused sprays to try to save their vines from the devastating Psa-V disease.

With the kiwifruit harvest due to begin in a few weeks, Kiwifruit Growers president Neil Trebilco urged growers to voluntarily tell the industry if they had used products wrongly or without approval. Some had come forward.

Psa has mostly affected the Zespri Gold kiwifruit variety and has now contaminated about 30 per cent of the industry’s orchards, largely in the Bay of Plenty.

By Annabelle LatzIt was food for thought earlier this week

when Marlborough’s future was the topic of a breakfast conversation.

Mayor Alistair Sowman spoke at the Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday; ‘Mak-ing the most of Marlborough, rethinking the region’s future.’

He said the future is all about being crea-tive to seek out the talent and opportunities that are here, in the form of people, groups, and industry.

“It’s about building on our strengths and being innovative.”

Marlborough is made up of many small businesses, and it is key to have the ability to network together.

“It’s about value, not volume.”Quality tourism, ensuring Marlborough

is clean, safe, and affordable for young people through to ageing populations, looking after the ecosystems, holding good relationships with the primary industries, and keeping up quality education, are topics Alistair touched on.

He also talked about the importance the town’s centre played, and the importance of planning its future.

“Our quality of life is remarkable. The regional economy needs to be smart to bring everything together, with successful businesses that are helping people in the community.”

Mother Nature put a spanner in the spokes of the Iron Man competitors at last weekend’s Taupo Iron Man. Steve Smith from Blenheim never got to complete his third event, as it was cancelled due to stormy conditions.

“The organisers made the right call.” But that didn’t stop his devastation.

“It was heartbreaking, it was a real

disaster.” A half Iron Man event took place on the Sunday instead, which Steve said his heart was not really in, but he still com-pleted in a very credible time of 6hr.11min.

“It was mentally hard, after all the train-ing for the Iron Man and all the sacrifices over the past months.” He’s not sure yet whether he will train for another Iron Man, “You have to get yourself mentally right.”

Lets plan for Marlborough’s future

Blenheim bus service which now runs on Sat-urday mornings is seen as a great tool for the community, says Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough general manager Brad Packham.

Last month Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough announced it had in-creased its sponsorship to $35,000 to contribute toward the extended service.

“We were hoping the service would be extended to Saturday so we were more than willing to help cover those costs as well,” he says.

Last Saturday was the beginning of the new service and de-spite the lower numbers due to bad weather, Marlborough District Council finance and

information supervisor David Craig is hoping the extended service will prove popular.

“The demand for the increased hours came from comments received over time and as we were due to re-tender, we decided to open the process to alternative tenderers outside of the existing weekday service.

“It seemed to be a logical progression, one we are hoping will prove popular,” he says.

Ritchies Transport Holdings Ltd has held the tender since the service first began in January 2005.

The service has come a long way since ex-panding from two to five days, and then in-troducing the free travel for Super Gold Card holders in November 2008.

Looking forward, Mr Craig says the Council may look at surveying public interest in further extending the service to cater for commuter traffic.

With the extended bus service comes slight changes to the timetable including a lunch break for drivers between 12noon and 1pm.

A copy of the new time-table is printed on page 9.

By Annabelle LatzThe news of making the Olympic team

for rowing was not a surprising one for Robbie Manson.

But after a few minutes, the realisation sunk in, flooding in childhood memories of dreaming of the Olympics.

The 22 year-old Blenheim rower has made the quadruple scull, and said his body has been through a fair bit of pain to get there.

He started rowing at Marlborough Boys’ College when he was 16, and has dedicated the last four years to earning the Olympic silver fern.

Based at Lake Karapiro in the Wai-kato, he ‘sleeps, eats and rows.’

“Your body is screaming out, you go through a lot of pain in the middle of a race.”

He said techniques of rowing change with different numbers of rowers in a boat, and different conditions, but the underlying theme remains the same.

“At the end of the day you are doing the same thing; pulling on that oar as much as you can.”

Robbie was 10 when he first took a fancy to making an Olympic team one day.

He picked up the oar as a teenager, and decided that was the sport he’d use to give the dream a go.

“It was my dream, but I never thought it would actually be me, because I thought I’d have to have something so special.”

He has lived a dream throughout his training, as described when he talks about his favourite rowing spot.

“It’s Bled, in Slovenia. We were there

for last year’s world champs. It’s the most amazing lake I’ve ever been to. The water was so clear, and the landscape was amazing, there was an island with a church on it, and a cliff with a castle. It was like a fairytale.”

Robbie had never travelled far before he started training hard at rowing, but in the last three years he has been to

Europe three times. Joining him will be fellow Marl-

burians Shaun O’Neill and Joseph O’Sullivan.

They will train hard at Lake Karapiro for 10 weeks, before heading to Europe for competitions in Lucerne and Munich mid-year.

London Olympics starts on July 27.

Joseph Sullivan and Robbie Manson training/racing together for the under 23 World Champs in 2009, which they won.
