2018,

a great year for victories

2017 has been an action-packed, thoroughly rewarding year,crowned with a wealth of achievements. Two riders inparticular, however, can justly pride themselves on theiraccomplishments: Cian O’Connor and Harrie Smolders.The Irish rider excelled all winter in Florida before winningthe European Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden withhis team in August. Not one for half measures, Cian alsowon the Individual Bronze medal. As for Harrie Smolders,he shone equally brightly throughout the year, chalking up aSilver medal at the European Championships as well asTeam Gold in the Nations Cup Final in Barcelona with hisorange-jacketed compatriots. He then went on to win theLongines Global Champions Tour title before the Final hadeven taken place! Hear what both champions haveto say about their exploits, amidst their dizzying scheduleof competitions, training sessions and everyday life.

Simon Knops: What a year Harrie ! What was the highlight ofthis past season – the European Championships in Gothenburgperhaps?Harrie Smolders: There have been several, I think… the EuropeanChampionships, my victory in the Global Champions Tour,winning the Nations Cup Final...

S.K.: What was your state of mind back in January and yourgoals for the season?H.S.: I was looking forward to it! I didn’t really have specificgoals. I knew I would be participating in the Global ChampionsLeague with the Hamburg Diamonds, because my ownerswanted me to do so. So that was actually the goal with whichwe started, and then about halfway through the season, whenI took the lead individually, I gave it increasing priority. At thatpoint, I had to sit down with my owners and decide whetherwe were going for the European Championships or not. Then Ihad to do a few Nations Cup qualifiers: Rotterdam, Aachen andHickstead. A few weeks later, we won the silver medal at theEuropeans, so that was fantastic for us because all our hardwork paid off.

S.K.: What were your expectations for Gothenburg?H.S.: I was very hopeful. It’s a wonderful competition, verywell-organized, and I knew I had a horse that was ready for theChampionships, so I was determined to put my stamp on thisone. But after the first day, it didn’t really look like that wasgoing to happen as we were in 31st position! However, I still hada very good feeling, because my horse jumped fantastically andif I had to do it again, I would do exactly the same.

S.K.: And then you finished second. Was that the highest thatyou could expect, or do you think you missed your target?H.S.: No, I never had Gold in my sights. The only thing that wasfrustrating was that I was more than four points away from PederFredricson. From Day One, I knew that he was going to be veryhard to catch. I never had the feeling that Gold was in my reach,but I also knew after that first day that if I did four clear rounds,I would end up on the podium. So that kept me motivated.

S.K.: And now you’ve won the Longines Global Champions Toureven before competing in the Final… How did you feel in Rome,the penultimate leg of the circuit: nervous or confident?H.S.: No, I wasn’t really nervous. The top six riders were still ontarget for winning the title so I thought the decision would be

made in Doha. But then the show turned out to be unbelieva-ble, like the whole season actually, with numbers 2, 3 and 4failing to qualify for the Grand Prix. For my part, I had to finishin the top three, so everything was alright for me.

S.K.: Don VHP Z and Emerald N.O.P. are your two top horses.How do you keep them in shape for the whole season? H.S.: Well they both had two months off this winter, and I didn’tcompete in the World Cup Final. I tried to prepare them reallywell during the winter. Don only did ten shows this seasonwhich is not a huge number, and I think that paid off. He’s stillfresh physically and mentally.

S.K.: Don has always been a good horse, but not the championhe is today. Now, he’s one of the top horses in the world. Whatmade the difference?H.S.: We’ve known each other for a long time, and weunderstand one another better and better. The first year, Iasked a lot of him so that he could get used to the rhythm. Nowhe has more experience, and we know each other very well. Ithink that’s what makes the difference in the ring.

S.K.: How do you organize your show planning?H.S.: It’s hard. Sometimes, perhaps, you have certain goals for thenext few months, but you always need to consider what shapeeach horse is in at any given moment. The horses will tell youwhere they want to go, and you have to be able to sense that.

S.K.: What is your best memory of 2017?H.S.: I can’t say, because 2017 is not finished yet! (laughs) We’vehad lot of fantastic moments but if I had to retain just onevictory, it would be the Global Champions title.

S.K.: What is your 2018 goal?I haven’t really made goals yet. I want to do everything, but youhave to make choices. Of course we’d like to go to the WorldCup Final, and to the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, but itall depends on how our horses are.

S.K.: Is the #1 position in the World Rankings a goal for you?H.S.: No, not really, because like I said we always think aboutthe horses first. If a horse is in good shape, then the results willfollow by themselves. But if you start to chase points, you’llnever get there. We always work from the horses’ point of view,not the other way round.

S.K.: What is your greatest strength?H.S.: I hope I have more than one! (laughs) When you wantto get to the top, you need lots of skills, not just one. Youalso need to have the right people around you. This year isthe result of all the hard work from the past 15 years, ofgetting the right people around me, from blacksmiths topeople who are good at managing... the right grooms, theright owners... As a rider, it’s important to know how toresolve problems and move forward – that’s how youdevelop and improve.

S.K.: Do you have a weakness?H.S.: For sure, lots, but I try to make them invisible!

S.K.: Do you have a fear?H.S.: Fear doesn’t really feature in my vocabulary.

S.K.: Do you have a hidden talent?H.S.: Not that I know! (laughs)

S.K.: If the young Harrie could give advice to today’s Harrie,what would he say?H.S.: Do it the same way!

S.K.: If you hadn’t become a show jumper, what would you havedone?H.S.: I don’t know. At school I liked economics and numbers andthat kind of thing, so I think it would have been something likethat. Or something in sport, as I like to follow all sports. So itwould be one of those two I think.

S.K.: Who inspires you today, and why?H.S.: I think great sportspeople inspire me; not only their achieve-ments but also their personalities when they don’t win. I think thatmakes them even greater sportsmen than they already are.Federer, Usain Bolt and those people… look at their attitude whenthey don’t win: they know exactly why and are aware of where itwent wrong. That’s why they never panic. They can also admire otherpeople when they are better than themselves at that moment.

Andy Chansel: You qualified for the European Championshipswith Good Luck. Can you tell us a bit more about this horse andwhere he comes from?Cian O’Connor: Good Luck is what we call the horse of alifetime. He’s very special to me. When I found him, inNovember 2004, he was only eight. I was looking for a top horseand my friend Abdel Saïd told me: “You’ve got to come and trythis horse, he’s really something else…”

A.C: What were your impressions the first time you rode him?Cian O’Connor: As soon as I saw him and rode him, I was in lovewith him. His explosive jump, his power. It’s taken time to trainhim, especially in his flatwork, and to get control between thefences. He was always a good jumper but he was difficult toride. And I think probably the [European Championships] is oneof the best [competitions] he has ever jumped. He was sorideable and smooth, and able to go fast the very first day.

A.C: Was his success at this top level a revelation for you?Cian O’Connor: I don’t think anything happens by chance. Weplanned it really hard. You also need a little bit of luck. And tobe so close to two Golds was incredible. Attaining this level withGood Luck was something we made a goal and a priority for theyear. When you have a horse like this, you know you alwayshave a chance if you make a good plan and ride well.

A.C: How did you prepare for these championships… with whichshows?Cian O’Connor: Well we didn’t really do that many shows. Good Luckhad a break in April and May because I was injured, and in June andJuly he was great, jumping the Grand Prix at Wiesbaden where hecame in 4th, then the Grand Prix in Sopot where he won, then theGrand Prix in Rotterdam where he was 2nd, and the Grand Prix in Aa-chen where he was 10th. Then he went to Dublin and was double clearin the Nations Cup, followed by Gold and Bronze in the Europeans !

A.C: Is Good Luck a horse that needs to jump a lot?Cian O’Connor: Not really. He doesn’t over-jump when he goesto shows; normally he does a smaller class and then a big class.After Sopot, I was pre-qualified for the Grand Prix events withhim, which made a big difference. And of course after the Euro-peans I’m pre-qualified for all Grand Prix shows with any horseuntil the next Europeans in 2019, which is also a nice boost.

A.C: What did you think about the Irish team – did you findRodrigo’s selection surprising?Cian O’Connor: No. Rodrigo decided early on in the year tosacrifice the Nations Cups. It was a tough but solid decision, andthe only way to achieve real success. If you try and take everysingle target on the way towards the big goal, you’re only foolingyourself and you’re very lucky if it works. But if you are reallyprepared to plan and sacrifice and stand back a little, then youcan go for the big target. Being Irish, we tend to over-focus onthe Nations Cup, sometimes to the detriment of otherchampionships. Having a Brazilian manager helps !

A.C: How did you and the team take Bertram Allen’s sub-par per-formance?Cian O’Connor: Bertram had his mishap with Hector, and thatwas unfortunate. But in team sports you have to help eachother; you have to pull together and fight for each other.

A.C: What about the decision for him to forgo the 2nd round; didit affect the team’s motivation?Cian O’Connor: I think Rodrigo was quick to decide that it wasmaybe not so good for Bertram to do the second round… notjust for him and his horse, but also for the rest of the team. It

was important that there should be no distraction; that theteam stay really focused. Bertram was on the ground, to helpand advise us if he saw anything.

A.C: A couple days later, you won the Individual Bronze medal.Which medal gave you the most satisfaction and why?Cian O’Connor: I think the Team medal. My last team medaldates back to Hartpury in England in 2000 when I was still ajunior rider. To be part of a team that wins Gold is somethingspecial and immensely satisfying, and Rodrigo played a largepart in our achieving it. He believed in us and never ceased toencourage us. In return, he expected a lot of us, setting the barvery high. But that’s what keeps us motivated and makes usexcel. He strengthens our team spirit – the feeling that we reallycan do amazing things when we work together.

A.C: What are your plans for the upcoming months, for you andfor Good Luck?Cian O’Connor: It was always my plan that Good Luck wouldhave a proper break for the winter. I really want to aim for theWorld Equestrian Games next year, so I’ll start him up nextspring. Meanwhile, he’ll stay in Ireland, out in the fields, and gofor rides in the forest every day. We’ll keep him in flat work,but he’ll not jump properly again until the beginning of nextsummer.

A.C: So are the Tryon World Equestrian Games your next goal?Cian O’Connor: Yes. WEG is the Irish Team’s first chance atOlympic qualification for 2020. I will make my plan back fromthat target. See you in Tryon!

Santiago Lambre was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and began riding at age five thanks to hisArgentinian father, Nestor. Colin Syquia was born in New York and learned to ride at the Claremont Academy. With anundergraduate degree in business administration and finance in his pocket, he went on to work asa rider for a number of stables. In 2002, he founded Eurasia Inc., a stable based in Wellington, FL,where he is both rider and trainer, equally happy competing in hunter, jumper and derby events.He recently won Individual Gold in the Southeast Asian Games, where he performed no less thansix clear rounds, contributing substantially towards his team’s Silver Medal. Nicolas first put his foot in a stirrup aged seven, and by the time he was twelvehad made up his mind to become a show jumper. His grandmother ran a stableand supported him, giving him the benefit of her experience and providing himwith a team of horses. Under the watchful eye of the highly technical nationaltrainer Henri Prudent, Nicolas soon showed his true colors in the competitionarena. Today, he rides for Mexico at the highest level, including the WorldEquestrian Games in Lexington in 2010, and the Olympic Games in London in 2012.

Paul O’Shea was born in Ireland and began riding in his hometown, Kildimo. At18, he went to Sweden to work as a groom in Rolf-Göran Bengtsson’s stables, andbegan competing in his own right two years later. Back in Ireland, he ranhis own stables for six years before deciding to take o7 again, this time toPhiladelphia, PA, to work as Harry Gill’s rider. Andy Chansel: What did you make of the product, of its look, thefirst time you saw it?Anaïs-Cerise Azorin: To be honest, I wasn’t very convinced. As it is,I already spend so much time on my telephone, and I thought itwas yet another gadget! But at the official presentation, it reallyamazed me. It represents a vast amount of time and thought andis an extremely advanced and interesting tool. I felt like a foolfor letting myself be influenced by my conventional prejudices.This is the era of connected objects, and it’s obvious that theyshould be associated with the world of equestrian sport nowadays.

A.C: Once out of the saddle, you were able to analyze your roundswith the video and the data collected by the app…A-C.A: Yes, we had a great debriefing session. We analyzed thevarious rounds after dissecting each stride in the greatest detail.It was hugely instructive! I’m only an amateur rider, and am wellaware of my mistakes and my demons that repeatedly come to thesurface, but I’m also quite good at ignoring them all from time to

time… That’s impossible with the video – you can’t avoid them! Inaddition to the images, there’s all the highly-detailed, concretedata relating to the particular moment when you are either doingtoo much or not enough.

A.C: Now that you’ve tested the iJump® and its app, what do youthink of it? A-C.A: I love it. I think it’s a fantastic work tool, especially foramateur riders. We don’t always ride correctly, and I genuinelybelieve that the iJump® and its detailed indicators can help usprogress.

A.C: Will we have the pleasure of seeing you using an iJump® soon? A-C.A: Why not! For the moment, I’m still taking advantage ofmy 2Gs Mademoiselle saddle. If I encounter the iJump® at acompetition with Mimi, I’m not against the idea of analyzing around, as a means of refocusing on certain data in order to adjustmy tactics afterwards.

After a number of eventful yearsand fine performances at ponylevel, Clément Fuzeau hasmoved on up into the world

of national and international amateurcompetitions, ever-keen to learn and improve.We invited him to try out the iJump® and sharehis experience with us.Andy Chansel: Which aspect do you find the most interesting to putinto practice and why?Clément Fuzeau: I would say the regularity of stride. It enablesyou to improve all the other aspects: stride, pace and speed perminute during a given circuit. All this data enables you to createexercises and acquire tips for improving your daily work routine.

A.C: Does the iJump® enable you to know and understand your horsebetter?C.F: For sure! Approaches and symmetry are essential forcombinations, and it’s interesting to see how we handle these

movements. The recovery and balance data have allowed me to getto know my horse much better, especially in the lines. All this de-tailed data improves my understanding of my horse, and enablesme to react accordingly.

A.C: So it gives you precise indicators about what you perceive andthen explains why…C.F: Yes, exactly. When I perceive things differently to my coach,for example, the iJump® has proved extremely useful: by providingconcrete data rather than impressions, it has enabled us to agreeand understand each other better. Other times, for instance, whenyou pick up [penalty] points for time even though you felt you hadcompleted the round within the time allowed, the iJump® allowsyou to understand why, by showing the pace, speed per minute andregularity of stride. It gives a wonderful overall view.

A.C: Does it complement your coach’s advice?C.F: Yes, absolutely. The data provided by the iJump® saddlesupplements what my coach tells me. If opinions differ, theiJump®’s indicators allow us to discuss things and find a way ofresolving them during our training sessions.

Georges Ngan Sassi is a professional riderfrom Lorraine in eastern France. He alreadyhas three French Championship titles to hisname (Cadet, Junior and Young Rider), and hasparticipated in the World Championships forYoung Horses. Andy Chansel: In your view, what are the strengths of thisconnected saddle and its app?Georges Ngan Sassi: It’s a real innovation. We’re only at the startof the use of connected objects in riding, but the iJump® is alreadyan amazing tool. It enables us to visualize the rounds by ourselves,without an external eye, even with the telephone in our pocket. Ona daily basis, it’s wonderful: you can use it for your horses’ jumpingsessions with a view to improving and perfecting your performance.

You can follow each horse’s progress in detail thanks to being ableto compare the various rounds.

A.C: How do you analyze the data collected and how does itinfluence your work?G.N.S: The data allows me to be aware of all the details thatcannot be seen by the naked eye, nor observed when I’m riding, butwhich are nonetheless essential. I can then adapt my flatwork inaccordance with what the data has allowed me to observe.

A.C: Do you see the iJump® as asupplementary teaching aid for yourpupils?G.N.S: Of course. It’s a tool that willenable them to become moreindependent while remaining focused ontheir progress. Thanks to the app, wecan debrief after each session andcompare different sessions.

CWD-VetLab:connected ridinggets its own lab

An agreement officializing the creation of theCWD-VetLab was signed on Friday, July 14, 2017 duringthe Longines Global Champions Tour in Chantilly, France,near Paris. While fighter planes flew over the Frenchcapital’s Champs Elysées in celebration of the BastilleDay national holiday, another revolution incollaborative research on equine well-being andhorse-rider performance was being toasted in Chantilly.

CWD-VetLab, the first shared laboratory combining aveterinary research unit and a business dedicated toequipment for sport horses and their riders, is supportedby the French National Research Agency (ANR).

The signatories of the agreement for this sharedlaboratory were Professor Fabrice Audigié (imaging andequine locomotor pathologies ENVA-CIRALE and Directorof CIRALE), Professor Henry Château (Equine Anatomy,Head of the Department of Biological and PharmaceuticalSciences at ENVA), and Laurent Duray (Managing Directorof CWD).

Connected riding, a unifying themeAs Laurent Duray explains: “This is a major steppingstone in CWD’s history, marking a collaborative ventureand a long-term commitment. It’s part of a strategyfocusing on innovation, research, publications and newproducts. A global dynamic that will obviously benefitthe company but also the entire equine sector withregard to the horse’s well-being and the performance ofthe horse-rider duo.”

1 / BREEDINGThe quality of leather begins in the fields.Cowhide retains its original beauty whenunharmed by barbed wire and parasites. In thenorth of the Dordogne, in southwest France,Limousin cattle are particularly valued for thefirm structure and fine grain of their hides. CWDsupports the Quality Charter of the Centre forRural Excellence in order to access high-qualitylocal hides. Making breeders aware of their rolein animal well-being and remunerating them fortheir efforts is the best way to achieve this.

2 / TANNINGQuality lies just beneath the surface.The quality of leather also depends upon thecorrect transformation of the hides duringtanning. It’s at this crucial stage that the mastertanner plays a key role.The Tanneries de Chamont, located 10 kms fromthe CWD workshops, is one of the brand’s mainleather suppliers. 4 / THE CUTTING PHASENo margin for error!The master saddlers begin the complex processof dividing up, cutting and matching the leather,using a whole range of specialist tools – all withthe same aim in mind, that of maximizing thesaddle’s lifespan.Key words: observation, colour, quality of fibres,elasticity, fault.

5 / SADDLE TREESThe backboneof CWD TECHNOLOGY’s research.The Classic saddle tree, both flexible and firm,is a skilful combination of wood and metal.The Dynamick® saddle tree consists of a Kevlarcarbon framework composed of a gullet arch,a racket and points, entirely embedded inelastomer. A true revolution, certified by abiomechanics engineer.

6 / FITTING THE LEATHERTO THE SADDLE TREEA tense moment.The initial pulling down (tautening) and tracingprocesses constitute a painstaking stage for thetechnician. First the piece of leather for thesaddle seat is positioned on the saddle tree andpulled down. This is followed by the tracingprocess (tracing lines symmetrical to thepommel-cantle axis in order to be able to posi-tion the skirts) and hand stitching the juncturewhich enables the skirts, piping and seat to beassembled. It requires absolute mastery ofstitching know-how.

7 / MOUNTING THE SEATON THE SADDLE TREEThe moment when everythingtakes shape.The second tautening is a process that is asprecise as it is exacting. It consists of thedefinitive mounting of the seat onto the saddletree, and is the starting point for assembling thedifferent components that make up a saddle.

8 / ASSEMBLING AND FITTING THE SADDLEFLAPS TO THE SEATCombining the elements:a gripping encounterPhase 1: the different elements of the flaps arefirst of all put together (knee pads and grainedflaps). Phase 2: the flaps are then fitted to thesaddle seat.

9 & 10 / FITTING THE PANELSAND ASSEMBLING THE PARTSThe final touch.The final stages consist of fitting the girthingand panels in order to assemble the saddle.Phase 1: fitting the girthing. Phase 2 : assem-bling and fitting the panels. The final process inthis assembly is lacing, which involves stitchingwaxed thread back and forth between thepanels, the piping and the seat of the saddle.

I’ve been mad about linguisticssince I was small. In Belgium

there are three di erent spokenlanguages, and over a hundred dialects.As a child, I instinctively rememberedevery dialect I came across. As I grewolder and started to travel, thisobsession stayed with me. As soon as Ihear someone speak, I try to work out

where they are from. Since [I started]living in the States, this guessing gamehas become even more obsessive: it’snow a question of guessing exactlywhich state they are from. A!er a fewwords, I can usually tell if they are a NewYorker, a Bostonian or a Southerner. Ispeak four languages at present. Ithink Spanish will be my next one!
