COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHICKENPOX
AND SMALLPOX
COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CHICKENPOX AND SMALLPOX
A
•Cutaneous bullous eruptions all over the body
B •Itchy skin rash
C•Fever•Flu-
like symptoms
SMALLPOX
caused by either of two virus variants
Variola major
Latin names Variola or Variola vera
Variola minor.
an infectious disease unique to humans
SMALLPOX
Smallpox localizes in small blood vessels
skin mouth throat
In the skin it results in a characteristic maculopapular rash and, later, raised fluid-filled blisters.
V. minor causes a milder form of disease which kills about 1% of its victims.
V. major produces a more serious disease and has an overall mortality rate of 30–35%.
Transmission
Transmission occurs through inhalation of airborne variola
usually droplets expressed from
the oral nasal pharyngeal mucosa
an infected person
Signs and symptoms of smallpoxMajor smallpox criteria
Fever (>101°F) precedes the rash by
2 to 4 days.
Malaise, head and body aches.
Classic small lesions:
deep-seated,firm/hard vesicles or
pustules.
Lesions in same stage of
development on any one part of the
body.
Minor smallpox criteria
Begins on face which spreads to
extremities.
First lesions on the oral mucosa, face
or forearms.
Slow evolution of lesion:
macules to papules to pustules.
Lesions on the palms and soles.
Patient appears toxic or moribund.
CHICKENPOX
CHICKENPOX
1•Is a highly
contagious illness caused by primary infection with varicella zoster virus
2
•Chickenpox is an airborne disease spread easily through coughing or sneezing of ill individuals or through direct contact with secretions from the rash.
3
•A person with chickenpox is infectious one to two days before the rash appears.
•They remain contagious until all lesions have crusted over

Lesions present on palms of hands and

THE RASH OF CHICKENPOX AND SMALLPOX ON DIFFERENT DAYS
On day 3, the rash of each disease are very similar
On day 2, the differentiation is impossible
THE RASH OF CHICKENPOX AND SMALLPOX ON DIFFERENT DAYS
By day 5, the differentiation is clear.
In the chickenpox there are papules, vesicles and pustules present.
However, the smallpox lesions are at the same stage of development.

big rash
THE RASH OF CHICKENPOX AND SMALLPOX ON DIFFERENT DAYS
By day 7, most of the chickenpox lesions have already formed scabs,
in the smallpox not yet formed.
On day 10, the chickenpox scabs have fallen off, while the smallpox scabs are just beginning to form.
Treatment
mainly consists of easing the symptoms
TreatmentThere is no actual cure
while the immune system clears the virus from the body
The condition resolves by itself with in a couple of weeks
It is important
•To maintain good hygiene
•Daily cleaning of skin with warm water
to avoid secondary bacterial infection
Use anti-itching creams and lotions
