A Small Town with a Big Personality This past January, my coworkers and I tooka day trip to a little town called Otsego, justabout a half hour south of Grand Rapids,Michigan. The City of Otsego was planning toapply for the Michigan Main Street programand we were visiting to check in on theirprogress. As we came off the highway andcontinued into town, we came upon a two-block downtown that didn’t look muchdifferent from many Michigan ruralcommunities. Several store fronts werevacant, the buildings could use some work, and the streets were empty. Sadly, due to theevolution of many downtowns, this issomething we see often in Michigan. Butmost importantly, it’s something we arepassionate about improving. During our stay, the folks from downtownOtsego were kind enough to show us allaround the city. The popular public library, theprivately owned grocery store, and the largeKalamazoo River running right throughdowntown allowed us to recognize thewonderful personality of Otsego. The city’snewly built public high school was absolutelystunning—something the whole town wasproud of. We were also shown a fullyfunctional industrial paper mill very close tothe downtown area. It became clear to usthat Otsego was once a thriving area with lotsof history and plenty of potential.
An Unforgettable Application At the Michigan Main Street Center, werequire potential Main Street communities toshow they are ready to adopt the Main Streetapproach through several requirements. Forexample, you must plan to hire a full-timemanager for your Main Street program, havean acting board of directors and committeesthat are willing to adopt the approach, andput together an inventory of buildings andproperties in the downtown district. Butperhaps the most important thing that theMichigan Main Street Center looks to find ina successful applicant is community support. If business owners, city officials, and otherimportant stakeholders don’t support MainStreet, communities tend to have a hard timecreating a successful program. It is crucial tothe success of the downtown that thesurrounding community believes in the MainStreet program and helps and allows it toflourish. In Otsego, we were overwhelmed by thecommunity support that we began to seeover the next few months. In February, eachcommunity applying for the Michigan MainStreet program is required to present to theMichigan Main Street Advisory Board inhopes of being selected for the program.Over the last ten years that the Michigan MainStreet Center has been established, we haveseen presentations from communities of allvarieties. From costumes, to formaladdresses, to live chickens, we’ve really seenit all. We look forward to these presentationseach and every year and this year we werequite impressed with the City of Otsego. Aswe sat waiting for their arrival, in walked a tinman made completely of tin foil, animpressive Dorothy, and a man dressed headto toe as a lion. They were immediatelyfollowed by 15-25 munchkins and another15-20 supporters of all ages. It seemed asthough the whole town of Otsego had made
the trip to Lansing! The number of people from Otsego alonewas impressive, but it wasn’t until they begantheir presentation that we could really see thepassion behind wanting to be a part of theMichigan Main Street program. Thecommunity had created a movie just for thispresentation and it was filmed, edited, andproduced by a group of dedicated Otsegohigh school students. As “The Wizard ofOtsego” began to play, all of the MichiganMain Street staff and advisory committeemembers began to smile. The movie wascharming, informative and trulydemonstrated the need for change indowntown Otsego. “If I had a brain, I’d fill thisvacant building with donuts, cakes, and mostof all coffee!” says, the Otsego Scarecrow.“People would come from all over to see it!” Perhaps the best part of the movie was thecrowd of nearly 400 Otsego residents, business owners, and people of all ages, dressed in coordinating colors to make a fullrainbow of bodies. All 400 people performeda choreographed dance to “Gangnum Style”,proving that this town doesn’t takethemselves too seriously and is willing to gothe extra mile. If that wasn’t enough, we werealso given 46 letters of financial commitmentfrom Otsego business owners and residents,to the Otsego Main Street program totaling$48,423. And the best part… the financialcommitments came together in only 72hours!
Ongoing Community Support Naturally, it wasn’t a difficult decision toaccept Otsego into the Michigan Main StreetProgram. We truly appreciated theirenthusiasm and we were excited to getstarted. But it wasn’t until May that we were
able to come toOtsego for theirB a s e l i n eAssessment. Doyou think thatslowed down theirm o m e n t u m ?Absolutely not!Between theiracceptance inFebruary and theirassessment in May,Otsego Main Streetorganized twoevents, puttogether a brand
new office for the program, and made lots ofnoise in the local media. The first event wasa Main Street Celebration complete with ared carpet, outdoor ice skating, and a“swearing-in” ceremony for all those who hadpromised to be a part of making Otsego abetter place. In April, a space for the Otsego Main Streetoffice was rented from a local property ownerwho was kind enough to donate extrameeting space as needed. Once that spacewas announced, the Otsego Main Streetprogram didn’t purchase a single item for theoffice other than a desktop computer for theirnew Main Street manager. Every piece offurniture, every appliance, and everydecoration was donated from local residentsand business owners. Now that’s communitysupport! Once the office was completed, the Otsego
Main Street program hosted an open housefor the office. Every donation, down to thevery last flower in the vase was clearly labeledwith the name of the donor and a thank younote. Guests at the open house were invitedto sign up for each of the four committees(promotions, organization, economicrestructuring, and design) depending on theirinterest or skills. All the while, the localnewspapers, TV stations, and other presswere closely following and documentingOtsego every step of the way. Otsego Main Street also continued to postregularly on social media outlets, making sureto thank all who were involved and intend tobe in the future. It became very clear to usthat this is a town that values relationshipsand is going to make sure that their story istold from the very beginning. We were quiteimpressed by all of the activity andenthusiasm created before the program hadtechnically even started. In May, a teamformed by our National Main Street CenterSenior Officer and Michigan Main Street staff, arrived to conduct the baseline assessment. This is a service provided to our newlyselected communities to recognize theprogress made toward establishing a localMain Street program and assist them indefining a vision for downtown and strategiesto build a strong revitalization process.Defining a Vision We kicked off the visit with a visioningsession. We were delighted, but not surprisedto see a very proactive group of propertyowners, business owners, residents, students, city officials and other local leaders, ready toshare their ideas and volunteer their time fordowntown Otsego. The results of thevisioning session were very telling of thewants and needs for a vibrant, activedowntown Otsego. Some of the ideasincluded developing the riverfront area, creating events and activities for all ages,
highlighting the strong family environment ofthe Otsego community, and adding shoppingopportunities, restaurants and gatheringplaces. Our team thinks that with Otsego’spassion, hard work, and supportive attitude, this community can and will, do anythingthey put their minds to! Towards the end of the “Wizard of Otsego”movie, we thought Otsego Police Officer of26 years, Lenny Borgman said it best. “Otsegohas that small town atmosphere with aprogressive attitude.” Michigan Main Streetcouldn’t agree more. We are looking forwardto working closely with the Otsego MainStreet program and supporting them withresources and assistance to be successful intheir efforts. We can’t wait for opportunitiesto visit again and see the progress they aresure to make over the next few short years. Read more about the community visioningsession in Otsego and learn why defining adowntown vision is an essential part of anyrevitalization effort at http://bit.ly/1gWaw0X

Have You Seen Our Cat? He is 6 yrs. old, very friendly, tiger stripped with lots of white around his neck, belly, and paws. His name is Hester. We moved from Plain-well to Otsego by Bittersweet Ski Resort with him. He ran away the next day. That was 3 weeks ago. We would appreciate it so much if you would contact us if you have seen him.
