Welcome “…Felicity belongs to the open-minded and the generous hearted… It is nourished by fun and celebration, by beauty and creativity…”It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the 32nd Loreto springArt Exhibition. In the year of felicity, it is fitting to acknowledge the relationship between joy and positive thinking, the components of felicity, and the appreciation of beauty and the creative process.

Thus, it is through art, both in its creation and appreciation, that happiness can be found for artist and viewer alike.

The artists who display their work as part of the Loreto springArt Exhibition are the epitome of creative thinking and the creative process. Our role as educators is to encourage and facilitate these attributes in our students so they are able to embrace creativity and through this process learn to think beyond what is known, to appreciate beauty and the aesthetics, and not be afraid to take the risk that is required to produce something that is beyond what others might see.

This is the joy of creativity in education!

Dr Nicole ArchardPrincipal

Loreto Art Department

We are delighted that past pupil, Jennifer Kalionis, Director of Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum, is opening the exhibition. Her presence reinforces our past students’ commitment to sharing their practice with current students and the wider Loreto Community.

It is fitting that this year, Felicity, one of the five values of Loreto education is our guiding value. ‘Felicity’, is ‘a disposition of the heart which manifests itself in joy, happiness, hope, optimism, positive thinking, inner peace, self-acceptance and courage’.

Creation and appreciation of visual art nourishes the spirit, ‘promoting a joyous and courageously hopeful attitude to life’. We are pleased to endorse this initiative and join with springART in inviting you to be captivated by the diversity of ideas and technical expertise of exhibiting artists.

Jacky Hamilton Learning Coordinator Visual Art

Loreto Marryatville has a long established tradition of recognising and valuing the Arts’ contribution to ‘an education which liberates, empowers and motivates students to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity’.

The Loreto Marryatville Art Department actively and consistently delivers a dynamic and relevant visual art curriculum and associated learning opportunities for students. It has a long tradition of supporting its graduates to pursue The Arts past their Year 12 studies. The acknowledgement of our past pupils exhibiting in springART 2016 is an aspirational model for our current and past students and a source of great pride for the Loreto Marryatville Art Department. It builds on a well-established collaboration between the College and springART exhibiting artists.

This year, students have had direct exposure to professional artists and past pupils, Jane Disher and Sarah Moller, through our Artist in Residency program. This program enhances students’ experience as visual art learners, and informs their understanding of why and how artists practise. Such experiences enable students to understand the rigour that an artist must develop to be successful in expressing their ideas in tangible form and to recognise the arts as a rewarding vocation for many in our community.

Loreto provides a nurturing environment that encourages creativity and a fresh view of the world and the artworks on display by Loreto’s Old Scholars are testament to this.

Congratulations!

This year represents the largest collection of Old Scholars in Loreto springART’s history.

We are thrilled to showcase the diverse artistic talents of these past pupils:

Feature & Emerging Artists

Feature Artist

Yve ThompsonYve’s working life had been spent largely as a graphic designer, before moving from the Blue Mountains to McLaren Vale in 1998.

The move presented an opportunity to shift the emphasis from design to fine art. Studies at Adelaide Central School of Art culminated in the Bachelor of Visual (Hons) in 2004. Drawing, painting and printmaking all find their way into Yve’s work, and non-traditional materials frequently form the base. Subject matter ranges from observational drawings of trees to purely abstract compositions.

Throughout, a Japanese influence is noticeable. “Initially the Japanese feel was unintentional but when people commented on this, I realised it was no coincidence - my bookshelves are full of Japanese art, design, architecture, gardens and textiles. Transcribing from a pair of screens (Muromachi Period, 15th Century) initiated a series that was purely about composition and playing with colour.”

In Loreto Spring Art 2016 some of the works express this debt to Japanese screen painting while others explore pure colour and rhythm.

Yve currently teaches in the Drawing Faculty at Adelaide Central School of Art and works from a studio at Central Studio’s Adelaide.

Emerging Artist

Tsering HannafordTsering uses light and detailed brushwork in her still life oil paintings to explore themes of transience. Influenced by the Australian tonal realists and Dutch old masters who painted from life, she evokes a reflective atmosphere and mood. Her method focuses on careful observation and celebration of the individual character of her arrangements. These works are executed in a short timeframe before the subjects (for example floral bouquets and fruit arrangements) perish.

Taking up painting in 2012, Tsering has received recognition for both her portraiture and still life work, being selected as a finalist in some highly regarded national competitions including the Archibald Prize, Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and Portia Geach Memorial Award. Tsering was recently highly commended by the judges for her entry to the Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize.

Having honed her skills in 2015 at the Grand Central Atelier and the Art Students’ League of New York with an Arts South Australia Individual Development grant, Tsering is continuing to work towards establishing herself as a realist painter in Adelaide.

International Artist

Anna RetulainenIn 1986, Anna attended Loreto College, Marryatville as an exchange student where her love of visual arts blossomed. Following the footsteps of her family, she was destined for a medical career. Her trajectory took a very different path thanks to the Loreto Art Department.

Today Anna is one of the leading figures in Finnish contemporary painting.

She has been showing works in solo and group exhibitions since 1995. She has twice been nominated for the Carnegie Art Award, most recently in 2014. Retulainen’s work is represented in most of the major Finnish public collections, as well as in countless private collections.

In her working process Anna Retulainen contemplates painting conventions and perceptions of painting. The subjects of her works are merely platforms for the application of paint; for finding a balance between movement, the layers of paint, and the vying between colours. Her paintings consist of details drawn from everyday life, from journeys real and imagined, or from the masterpieces of art history. Her style is expressionistic, and yet refined in a stylized manner. Above all, Retulainen is an exquisite colourist.

International Artist

The themes of her works vary from her beloved vegetable, fruit and flower still lifes, to more intimate drawings of her everyday life and those close to her. For Retulainen drawing is a way of living; it is her way of putting the world in its place. Only at her studio do the drawings become paintings, fusions of life and art.

Had I not come to Loreto as an Exchange Student in 1996 I would never have become a painter. My career as an artist is thanks to the Loreto Art Department.

Aboriginal Art

UtopiaIn the mid 70s when the pastoral lease of Utopia, Central Australia became an Aboriginal freehold property the Alyawarr and Anmatyerr people moved from the surrounding pastoral stations to settle in camps on the north western part of Utopia. The Aboriginal art movement began in Utopia around this time with the introduction of the Utopia Women’s Batik Group. The women were initially taught tie-dyeing and batiking T-shirts before venturing into the silk medium.

This was the beginning of an extraordinary artistic community and the emergence of its star - Emily Kame Kngwarreye who has since been acclaimed as the most important Aboriginal artists of her generation.

Today the art of Utopia continues to astound. There are well over 250 professional artists in the region, all producing work that has great signifi cance in one way or another. Whether it be traditional or abstract, in the form of dots, lines or a mixture of both, there is always a sense of pride and achievement in their art!

Loreto springART is proud to present a selection of artists from Utopia.

Star Portrait

Chester Osborn, d’Arenberg WinesJoin in the fun as our Star Portrait subject, winemaker Chester Osborn from d’Arenberg Wines, chooses his favourite portrait by three local portrait artists.

Chester is a fourth generation winemaker, taking over from his father in 1983. He has forged a reputation for producing strikingly individual wines and melding tradition and innovation. He has a minimal input approach to viticulture to get the greatest expression of the soil from a network of ancient vines across the McLaren Vale region.

In the winery Chester maintains many practices used by his father and grandfather including the use of open wax-lined concrete fermenters, basket presses for reds and whites and foot treading red ferments.

Discovering new varieties suited to the diverse terroir of McLaren Vale has been an ongoing passion for Chester. He has been instrumental in introducing many varieties to the region and now makes wine from over 33 different varieties, including 17 single vineyard Shiraz and Grenache wines, called the Amazing Sites.

In 2012 he and his father, d’Arry Osborn, celebrated 100 years of family winemaking and grape growing in McLaren Vale.
