ARAMARK –ASU A TRUE HIRING PALOOZA After the devastating route of the other candidates in the first round of the Aramark-ASU Hiring Palooza, TEAM UMOM is hoping to repeat its stunning blow out of all the other candidates at Tuesday’s Second Round of Hiring. It was widely rumoured that there must have been a secret to the success of TEAM UMOM’s and how they dominated the hiring process in Round One. When asked for comment, Uncle Bob (UMOM Trainer and Senior Class Cheer Leader) merely stated that “They (TEAM UMOM) had it in their hearts to being successful and they did their homework with the study guide…It goes to prove that they were better prepared than the other candidates and they proved this by coming home with a 8-0 record!” It is to be seen if TEAM UMOM will be able to field a new team and sweep Round Two of the Hiring Palooza. A TRUE HIRING PALOOZA

After the devastating route of the other candidates in the first round of the Aramark-ASU Hiring Palooza, TEAM UMOM is hoping to repeat its stunning blow out of all the other candidates at Tuesday’s Second Round of Hiring. It was widely rumoured that there must have been a secret to the success of TEAM UMOM’s and how they dominated the hiring process in Round One. When asked for comment, Uncle Bob (UMOM Trainer and Senior Class Cheer Leader) merely stated that “They (TEAM UMOM) had it in their hearts to being successful and they did their homework with the study guide…It goes to prove that they were better prepared than the other candidates and they proved this by coming home with a 8-0 record!” It is to be seen if TEAM UMOM will be able to field a new team and

sweep Round Two of the Hiring Palooza.

FROM THE DESK OF

Aliwishious I. Waasagoat Ph.D. Dr. Waasagoat is a classically trained Workforce Specialist and has authored many articles on “You can Dress for Success at Home Depot” and on the “How to utilize the magical powers of your Killer Resume to get that job in the fast Food Industry.” I received my Master’s Degree in Career Studies and then was awarded my Ph.D. in Cubical Logistics and Utilization Management (from the IBM Institute of Corporate Integration) in 1956. Since then, I have worked as a career counselor and as a corporate job coach for several generations of senior executive recruiting firms to assist their high-end, corporate clients further their executive careers.

Page 4: 8jul2014...A TRUE HIRING PALOOZA

With the advent of Workforce, I was asked to take on the task of utilizing my amassed ability and expertise in successfully directing job candidates to the highest levels of employment in Corporate America and channel it to focus on giving entry-level and re-entry job seekers the resume and “dress for success” tools that would allow them to rise up to the highest levels of Corporate America. I have received much recognition and praise for my extensive writing on the concept of “skills-are-skills” (be in the corporate board room or the cash register at McDonalds) and how we cannot abandon, our great conservative, one-size-fits-all job search methodologies that I learned in school and have successfully handed down to (now) several generations of seasoned, corporate professionals. Those who would tell you that we need individualize and develop new techniques to address (what they see) as the generational or economic changes in the current job market are radicals that don’t understand the timeless nature of America’s Economy and are dangerous trouble makers in that they get people believing that the time-tested, traditional methods (that have carried us forward from one generation to the next) need changing. The work that I have done to give the down trodden a sense of hope that someday they too can use the skills that I have taught them to advance within a major corporation to the Board of Directors, serves them well in their current efforts to secure entry or re-entry employment. It starts them preparing for the day when they will have the knowledge and skills forged by years of working their way through the ranks to get to a senior position through “dress for success.” To those who say otherwise have forgotten that “dressing for success” starts with your first job and the power it will give you to outshine your sloppy co-workers and impress all of your management that here is a young lad on the way up…that is what wearing a business suit to Home Depot says about you or your killer resume will impress management that you are on your way up (not here at the counter for long…I have a suit and a killer resume!) What better tools could I give an entry level worker…? In closing “What is this Rule Number 4?” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sadly… Dr. Waasagoat’s opinions are still accepted as mainstream concepts that ignore the changing economics and with it the job seeking needs of non-corporate people. Dr. Waasagoat said that our suggestions were radical and we gave him equal time to say. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“THESE ARE TIMES THAT TRIAL OUR SOULS…A TIME WHEN WHAT WAS CAN BE NO MORE AND EVEN THAT OLD FART WAASAGOAT NEEDS TO COME CLEAN AND TELL YOU THAT HE IS IN IT FOR THE MONEY.” - UNCLE BOB If it weren’t for the money, then why else would he tell you with a straight face (funny hat) that his repackaging of 1950’s (state-of-the-art) career advice is your only key to a better life and job?

Page 5: 8jul2014...A TRUE HIRING PALOOZA

CREATING A BETTER SOLUTION… Winston Churchill once explained his definition of stupid by saying “if you keep repeating the same action(s) over and over again while (truly) believing that you will get a better result than what you have always got…” well, you get the rest. Heraclitus of Ephesus told us 2,500 years ago that change is constant. Everything has its own time and its own place. What gurus like Dr. Waasagoat would want you to believe that change is not needed…change is bad…radical and unwise. Dr. Waasagoat was a creative thinker (maybe) in 1957 but, then he shut his mind and I would say, shut his heart to the real plight and the needs of entry or re-entry workers in the 21st century who are being victimized by his 1950’s (state-of-the-art) job seeking advice. I would hope to think that it is out of ignorance as he has not lived in the real, economic world of the entry level work. I would hope that since he is a stranger to the work world as we know it, that he just doesn’t see the stark differences between his corporate board rooms and living without a living wage. I would hope that all of this is true and then, it would explain his (the system’s) inability to help those who have been displaced, left out, cast-a-way or driven from the bountiful harvest of the American Dream. His desire to help and serve should be championed but, when his help becomes hurtful, counterproductive and blind to the real needs of those he claims to help; then, we must raise a challenge to his continued leadership role in the Workforce Community. Here at the Used Job Shack, we challenge a full range of deeply entrenched Workforce Values daily.

TIPSTER: The employer’s online job description (beyond the bare basics) is terrible. If you had more time, you could smooze the HR People to give you the full, multi-page description. This will give you a complete breakdown of the required skills/abilities and it has all the key words/phrases to get past the gate keeper.

Go to the department where the job is. Maids would go to the Housekeeping Department and retail clerks should go to the gift shop…ECT…This is critical! This is a real insider tip in the industry… Go in and start the following conversation: “I was in the neighborhood and I REALLY wanted to stop in and introduce myself as I applied online for ___________ and I was wondering if anyone would have time to talk to me about this position and/or any “upcoming” openings that would utilize my skills/abilities/experience in _________________?” This starts a conversation with the actual people who will decide to interview you and/or can hire you. If they like you, they will walk you over to (or send you over to the HR) and you will see how much nicer they will be to you. This is the surest way to get yourself known by the people who actually will make the decision to hire you.

BETTER YET! THIS IS THE BEST METHOD EVER! Not everyone is bold or they are not a smooth talker that can strike up a conversation at will. Maybe you are shy? If so, the above may be difficult and you might need a different approach. This does not mean “stay at home and wait for them to call you” because they won’t! Every one of our hires at hotels/resorts was because they had the courage to go over and introduce themselves. Either way you need to bite the bullet and go over there (accept 11AM -1PM) or quit applying for these types of jobs. If you are the Iron Chef, they will call you but otherwise, they won’t. If you call the HR Office will insist that you apply online where their computer will eliminate 90% of the applications and they feel they are too busy to deal with you walking in. This does work with HR but, don’t tell them that we told you! This works because the vast majority of people will listen to them and will not have the nerve to just show up.

Page 18: 8jul2014...A TRUE HIRING PALOOZA

THIS IS THE BEST INSIDER TIP WE EVER GOT! We use to do a lot of business with one of the better known resorts and how well you did with them depended upon the approach you took. SAMPLE 1 (NORMAL WAY): You walk in to the HR Office and ask the young lady at the counter if they are hiring. She would respond by giving you an application and show you the job board (postings). Upon completing your application, she would say “Thank you very much, we will let you know.” SAMPLE 2 (THE INSIDER WAY): You walk in to the HR Office and start a conversation with the young lady at the counter by saying: “You know you have such a beautiful resort (hotel) and I pass by here every day but, I never had enough courage to come in…You know, ever since I was a little, it has always been a dream to get into the hospitality business… (In fact, ever since I was six and my parents took me to my first resort…when we were leaving, I told the lady at the front counter that I would work there someday)… I don’t know if you could use a person {as you hand her a copy of your resume} with my skills and background but, I would give anything to work in such a beautiful resort…and I was wondering if you could show me where to start?” The young lady responds by giving you an application and shows you the job board (postings). Upon completing your application, she reviews your application to see what position you applied for (or she may tell you to apply for a different position that she thinks would be better for you) and then would pick up the phone and call Mr. Jones in Housekeeping and say: “Mr. Jones do you have a moment? I have a very nice young lady who would like to work for us. Would you have time to talk to her?”

NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY… Both are true stories with the same company and the same person at the HR Counter. I sent two people over to apply. The first person (normal way) and didn’t have a story nor did they ask for assistance. The second person arrived an hour later with a motivation story as her introduction that got the attention of the person at the counter and when the applicant asked for assistance, she got a completely different level of service. There are research papers written as to why this worked but, the simple fact that it did should be enough to give you thought. To understand this you must understand that people in the resorts (especially HR or Management Levels) love what they do, they are true believers, and they live and even dream about the

Page 19: 8jul2014...A TRUE HIRING PALOOZA

industry. It is human nature for people to offer a higher level of assistance to people who share their beliefs or interests. This is the same bounding process that allows total strangers to become friend after a 15 minute wait for a bus. Fair? No! But, this is not about fairness it is about getting a job and using anything that gives you an advantage. =======================================================================

TIPSTER 2: Pray that you knew what RULE #4 was and that you used that format to create your online application and that you then cut-n-paste that into you newly reformatted, KILLER RESUME. Read the job descriptions and you will see that the employer (with a few high-end acceptations) is seeking availability to work specific hours (do you know which?), motivation and then, skills and abilities. The employer’s online job description (beyond the bare basics) is terrible. If you had more time, you could smooze the HR People to give you the full, multi-page description. But, your available time is short and unless you want to drag Old Lady Luck Along to roll the dice for your future; then go to the US Department of labor’s Dictionary of Occupational Titles and type in the job title you need info on. You will be amazed by the length and breathe of the job description and assemblage of key words and phrases for your job title.

TIPSTER 3: RULE # SIX: Research…Do your homework: The greatest change in the job seeking market. Employers are (especially on entry level jobs) looking for skills and most importantly, they are looking for your motivation in wanting this particular job and/or working for this company. If you answer to either question is “Burger king didn’t hire me…” you are in serious trouble. The employer figures if you are not willing to take 10-15 minutes of your own time to get on the internet to discover “who they are…what they do and why they do it…” then, they probably don’t need you. The reasoning is that if you are not willing to do that for yourself and your future…how can they expect you to care about their company and the work that they need you to do.

By showing up uneducated, you are insulting the employer and they will know that you didn’t really want THIS JOB from the very start of the interview…they needed you to want THIS JOB not any job…these interviews usually end with “Thank you very much…we will let you know…” =============================================================================

USED JOB SHACK INSIDER: SPA ATTENDANT - I applied through an employee referral Interview Details – I got hired during a job fair so the process was quicker than usual. I had one interview with the Spa Attendant Manager then he introduced me to the Director of the spa after the interview and had let me know that I was hired after that I had one drug test, and 3 days of orientation. It took about a month till I was actually working. Interview Question – basic questions, nothing was unexpected. ----------------------------------------------------- SPA CONCIERGE INTERVIEW I applied online and the process took 2 days – Interview Details – I initially was interviewed by two supervisors, I received a full tour of the spa before I was sat down to interview. WHAT THEY LOOK FOR:

• Professional Demeanor • Communication • Time management - Stress Management • Team Work

THEY USUAL QUESTIONS LIKE: • Tell me a time when you WOW'd someone/ Exceeded their expectations • Why do you want to work for this company? • What is your weakness • What are your strengths • What is your biggest accomplishment • What are your future goals • Tell me about your other jobs

The next week I had an interview with the Spa Director. She was very nice and asked me somewhat the same questions. She also mentioned that the pay rate was MINIMUM WAGE and that I would be working FULL TIME and would not have time to go to school. That was pretty much it; I got hired a month later and had a background and drug test. INTERVIEW QUESTIONS • What are your weaknesses? • Tell me about a time you exceeded someone’s expectations

DINING ROOM ATTENDANT INTERVIEW The process took 2 weeks. Interview Details – applied online - had an interview - drug test background check Interview Question –

• Tell me about a time that you had to deal with rough working conditions. --------------------------------------------------------------- EVENT CONCIERGE INTERVIEW I applied online and the process took 2 weeks Interview Details – The interview process was very straight forward. They first called me with a phone interview asking questions using the situation, action, response scenario. After this, I was called in for an interview with one of the managers, who then brought in other managers from the department and departments that I would be working with, and the director of my direct department. It took so long because I was coming in from another state so I had to coordinate my travel times. After the in-person interview, they offered me the job on the spot, took me on a tour, and I got to meet a lot of people that I would be working with. Employment depended on a drug test, background check, and after passing these, a 2 day orientation training. Interview Question –

• Where do you see yourself in 5 years? =======================================================================
