Defining fameAsk students to write their own definition for whatthey think constitutes fame. Split the class intodiscussion groups to compare definitions. Ask groupsto combine ideas and rewrite them to make a singledefinition that all group members agree with. Haveeach group report their definition to the class. Discussthe differences, if any, between them. Consult adictionary and read the definition to the class andcompare it to those written by students. Display thedefinitions for future reference.

BrainstormWith students, brainstorm names of famousAustralians. Accept all names that students putforward. Then discuss any names that students feeldon’t belong on the list. Invite the student who putthe name forward to justify its inclusion inaccordance with the definitions previously developed.Add any names that are important to include. Ensurethat local figures and legends are included andperhaps animals, such as Phar Lap and the ‘Dog onthe Tuckerbox’.

ClassifyCategorise the people on the list in terms of the areaof their field of endeavour, for example business, entertainment, the arts, science, medicine, war hero, political, infamous, inventor, pioneer, explorer, social justice and sport. Define and discuss the term ‘infamous’. Ask students to thinkwhat sort of characters would be included on this list (e.g. the bushrangers Ben Hall, Thunderbolt, Ned Kelly, Captain Moonlight, and robbers such asRonald Biggs).

SurveyAsk students to survey family members to find outwhich Australians they consider to be famous. Cometogether as a class to compile all findings. Compare itwith the list brainstormed by students in an earlieractivity. Identify people on the family members’ listwho students haven’t heard of. Encourage students touse factual books and the Internet, if available, tofind the area of endeavour of these people. Havestudents use this information to complete BLM 1.

ScrapbookAsk students to collect articles about current famousAustralians from newspapers and magazines. Havethem glue the articles into a class scrapbook. This canbe reviewed at the end of the unit.

MatrixExplain how a matrix provides a concise summary of information. For this activity you might like toenlarge BLM 2. Provide each student with a copy.Brainstorm possible headings for the columns (e.g. courage, personality, talent, perseverance, intelligence, appearance, etc) and ask each student todecide on the headings they would like to use. Havethem record their headings on the matrix. Explainthat when they are researching famous people, theymight come across other qualities. These can beadded to the matrix. Divide the class into smallgroups and, to ensure a wide variety of people arelisted, allocate each group a field of endeavour toresearch. Students should read information about asmany of the people listed in the category as possible.Use the matrix to summarise the qualities of eachperson. Have groups report back to the class anddetail their findings. Discuss any additional columnsstudents added to the matrix. Display the matrixesaround the room as these will be useful for studentsto refer to as the unit progresses.

Role modelsGeneralise the important qualities and achievementsthat make the identified people famous. Ask studentsif they have heard of the term ‘role model’. Explainthat famous people can act as role models for youngAustralians. With students, discuss the famousAustralians they think are good role models. Askwhether the behaviour of famous people is alwaysacceptable. Give examples of sports people losingtheir temper – fights on football fields, etc. Discussthe effect this can have on people who see thosepeople as role models.

TimelineRefer to the class lists and the matrix and, withstudents, discuss those people that have played a

significant part inAustralia’s development. As a class, create atimeline to show the

Explain that one person in thegroup has to pretend they are that explorer, and thatthey have just returned from their expedition. Theother members of the group have to conduct an oralinterview with the explorer. Allow time for studentsto research the expedition and to rehearse theinterview before presenting it to class members.Suggest to students that they might like to wearappropriate dress-up clothes for the presentation.

Board gamesDiscuss with students the problems that explorersmight have faced. What qualities did these peoplehave to possess to overcome these difficulties? Invitestudents to design a board game that includes someof the difficulties and successes of the explorers, forexample, ‘Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth crossedthe Blue Mountains and cleared the path, moveforward four paces’.

InventorsAustralia has one of the highest number of inventorsin proportion to our population in the world. Someof our more famous inventions are the Hills hoist andthe rotary lawn mower. Usenewspapers to study the style of headlines and thelanguage used in them. Ask students to writeheadlines to herald the inventions of the productslisted on BLM 4.

ResearchEncourage students to choose an Australian who isfamous because of their invention. Try to ensure thatthere is a spread across different areas such asfarming, medicine, industrial and householdproducts. After revising the structure and features ofan information report, ask students to write aninformation report based on their research. Compilepublished copies into a class book on famousAustralian inventors.

BanknotesSince the introduction of decimal currency, Australianbanknotes have featured profiles of famousAustralians. Explain to students that the currentnotes have recently replaced paper notes. the name of the author or the illustrator

 name of the award won

 the year it was won

 the name of the book

the plot (if the award winner was the author)

the style of the illustrations (if the award winner was the illustrator)

what the students likes/dislikes about the book

whether they consider the author or illustrator to be famous.

Nobel prizeThe Nobel prize is an international award namedafter Alfred Bernhard Nobel. Nobel created a fortune from the manufacture of explosives. When he died he left much of his fortune to beawarded for advancements in the fields ofphysiology, medicine, chemistry, physics, economics, science, literature and for promoting world peace.Have students construct a chart detailing Australianswho have won Nobel prizes.

Australia Day honoursExplain to students that Order of Australia awardsare announced each year on Australia Day.Australians who have made outstandingcontributions in their field are presented withmedals. Decorations for bravery are also awarded atthis ceremony. Ask the school librarian to find the listof award recipients for this year. Discuss withstudents why each person received the award.Encourage students to design a poster promoting aperson that they believe should win an award nextyear. Explain to students that there are many peoplein the community who make outstandingcontributions to society, yet they are rarely givenawards, for example those people who work forwelfare groups such as the Salvation Army.

Australian of the Year AwardAustralian of the Year Award and the YoungAustralian of the Year Award are presented each yearto individuals who have made outstandingcontributions to Australian society. The NationalAustralia Day Committee carefully considersnominations before deciding on a winner. Withstudents, study the list of recipients of the award anddiscuss the reasons why they might have won. Dothey come from a variety of different areas of work?Ask students to identify the recipients who have alsowon a Nobel prize. Discuss with studentscharacteristics that make these people moreoutstanding than other Australians. Place studentsinto groups and ask them to prepare a list of criteriathat could be used to judge future Australians of theyear. Have each group appoint a spokesperson toread their criteria to class members. Use these togenerate a class discussion about the difficulties ofchoosing the winner.

Hall of fameMany fields of endeavour have constructed a hall offame to honour people who are outstanding in thatfield, for example sporting people are honoured in asporting hall of fame. Have students use BLM 7 toconstruct their own hall of fame for an area of theirparticular interest. Ask students to justify theinclusion of the people on their list.

Postage stampsAustralia Post often releases special sets of stamps tocommemorate events and to celebrate special fieldsof endeavour. what they have done to become famous

if fame has changed their lives and, if it has, in what ways.

Ask students to draft, revise and write a recountabout how and why they have become famous.Remind students that recounts usually begin with anorientation (introducing the setting and thecharacters) followed by a series of events written inthe order in which they occurred. Recounts should bewritten in the past tense as the events have alreadyoccurred.
