Is 6:1-8; 1 Cor 15:1-11; Lk 5 1-11 Just over a week ago one of the all time great football quarterbacks retired. Kurt Warner did not seem destined to greatness. He began as a third string quarterback at Northern Iowa and even after winning the top job and breaking records his senior year he was cut before the season began from the pros. Warner was stocking groceries for $5.50 an hour when he finally got a position with the Arena Football League and the “rest is history”; two MVP awards, three Super Bowl s, tons of records. Written off by everyone, against all odds, Kurt Warner was able to achieve greatness as a National Football League Quarterback. Today, on Super Bowl Sunday, as we begin our Together in Mission Annual Appeal, scripture is filled with heroes who worked great things for God’s Kingdom against all odds. In the first reading we hear of Isaiah who had a vision of heaven where he realized his unworthiness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean lips” (Is 6:3). St. Paul will recognize his failings in the his letter to the Corinthians, “For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am” (15:10). In today’s Gospel, after lowering his nets at Jesus’ command and viewing the abundant catch he will fall on his knees and say, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” God never gives up on any of us; He recognizes the greatness inside each one of us and is able to open to open the way for us to bring hope not only into our own lives but to the world around us. This is the beauty of the Together in Mission Annual Appeal. God is able to take us in our brokenness, show us our potential and lead us to helping Him bring about His Kingdom. As priests God has done this to us with our lives. I was definitely not the best or brightest of children when I was called by God to enter the seminary. I was not the most courageous priest around when I was sent to South Central Los Angeles and my ability to speak Spanish was not so great when I was sent to East Los Angeles and later to be Pastor in South Gate and I am sure there were many who would have been much more qualified to take on the leadership of Mary Star of the Sea. Yet, God, throughout my broken life has been able to use me to help him bring about His Kingdom. I understand that these are economically challenging times; financially many of us are as down-in-out as Kurt Warner was when he was stocking shelves at a grocery store. The Together in Mission Annual Appeal is an opportunity to respond to the Gospel in our own lives. Before the disciples will be able to cast the nets into the water in today’s Gospel, the nets must be mended. We have been struggling here at Mary Star, but this recession has affected the poor and the poorer parishes much more harshly then parishes such as ours. Many of our inner-city parishes are only able to afford one priest and a secretary and struggle to pay those salaries. Many of our elementary schools throughout the Archdiocese are struggling like they never have before; some may have to close and some who had been doing well only a couple of years ago are in crisis. Utilities, taxes, insurances, payrolls and all other bills are rising in our poorer parishes and schools while their incomes are decreasing at a greater lever than here. This is a bleak time throughout our nation and here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles; but not a hopeless time. God is always able to find us in our brokenness and bring new hope into our lives. Today I am asking you to help in this work of our Lord through your commitment to the Together in Mission Annual Appeal. This is not a onetime donation that we place in the basket. We are called to make a pledge, a commitment to the work of the Church in the poorer parishes and schools throughout the Archdiocese. Many of you will receive a letter from the Cardinal and a pledge form in the mail, and all of us will receive an opportunity to pledge as we come to church in the coming weeks. Our goal this year is $92,252; if we do not reach our goal this will have to be paid by the parish. Last year we met and exceeded our goal and I am very confident that again, despite our troubled times, we will exceed our goal this year. I invite you to trust in the Lord, lower your nets though your generosity and allow Christ to use you to become fishers of men. It was very nice to see our response to our Elementary School Open House. We have much to be proud of with our new Pre-school, our

Elementary School and our High School. We have had an excellent response to our Parish Spiritual Renewal, yet I will not be pleased until we have the whole parish enrolled. Please inform us if you know any homebound who would like to receive weekly communion and a periodic visit from our priests. Our Adult Catechism Class is discussing the Life and Ministry of Jesus. All are invited. God Bless, Fr. John Provenza Pastor

This week at Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. This week gives us an opportunity to step back and appreciate the gift of a Catholic Education. Thank you to all the parishioners and visitors who joined us a Open House and for Grandparents Day.

The week was filled with celebrations and activities: Last Sunday the school was open to visitors for Open House. Our teachers opened their classrooms and shared the spiritual and academic lives that exist in their classrooms. Thank you to Student Council members and all the students who gave tours and showed off their school. On Monday morning students were awarded for exhibiting the virtue of generosity at our weekly assembly. Fr. Brian and the Knights of Columbus awarded students who participated in their poster contest on vocations. Congratulations to Mindy Marasigan, Nick Cucinotta and Ethan Halbach! On Wednesday we hosted our annual Grandparents Day. Grandparents and Special Friends visited the classrooms and enjoyed a reception in the auditorium. On Friday our teachers were treated to a luncheon in appreciation of their hard work and for choosing to work in Catholic School. Perpetual Adoration

I am most grateful for Sr. Ena, of the Cluny Sisters, for coming forward to spend time with the Blessed Sacrament in our Adoration Chapel. She was the only one in this parish to respond to my most recent plea. In a time when prayer is most welcome and needed in this world, that is very sad and hard to accept. This is a large parish and I still need to have the following hours filled with committed adorers:

Saturday 2-3 p.m. and 8-9 p.m.

Sunday 1-2 p.m. and 2-3 p.m. Monday 7-9 p.m. and 8-9 p.m. Thursday 9-10 p.m.

Thank you and God bless any of you interested in reaping the benefits of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. I am most grateful for all of the Adorers that are currently so very devoted.

Please call Barbara West at 310/548-1693 to discuss openings

or fill out an enrollment form found in the Chapel and return to Fr. Ivan in the Rectory.

This week, you are asked to read and reflect upon the Together in Mission materials that you received today. Together in Mission provides sub-stantial financial support to 35 par-ishes and 61 schools in our Archdio-cese. These parishes and schools provide education, ministry and a Catholic presence for tens of thou-sands of our sisters and brothers.

Sometimes it is difficult to envision how your pledge can help so many people. But, it does. To see how, please review the materials and read the statements of those whose parishes and schools receive support. The theme of the campaign is “I Give Thanks to You, Lord.” Psalm 138:1 Together in Mission provides an opportunity to show our concern for those served by the parishes and schools that need your financial support. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. Also, we will conduct our annual Together in Mission in-pew pledge process at all Masses this weekend and the following weekend. As always, what you give should be given in gratitude and thanksgiving for what God has given to you. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Saint Joseph’s Table

St. Joseph, the patron saint of the Universal Church, will be honored by a traditional St. Joseph’s Table at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Sunday, March 21, 2009. This ancient tradition goes back to the Middle Ages. At that time there was a severe drought in Sicily. No rain fell for a very long time, no crops would grow, and countless people died of starvation. The faithful prayed to St.

Joseph to intercede with God on their behalf. They promised that if God brought the rain, they would have a special feast honoring God and St. Joseph. Events of the day: The Mary Star parish groups and all other attendees will assemble in the parish auditorium at 11:15am. The statue of St. Joseph will be taken in procession with chants of ‘Viva San Giuseppe!”Following the service, the procession will move to the auditorium for a “Poor Man’s Meal.” The attendees will be greeted by the ‘Holy Family.” The meal will be blessed and the statute of St. Joseph will be visible to everyone. The event is free to the public. Bring you family and friends! Free will donations toward scholarship programs will be accepted.

“Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch” Luke 5,4)

IMITATING PETER’S FAITH

At Jesus’ daring command for a seasoned fisherman to lower his nets for a catch, Peter obeyed. His humble act was rewarded with a

miraculous catch of fishes and a new mission to be fisher of men. We too can imitate such faith. We, the Maritime ministry can do no less in accomplishing our mission to them We hear their sea stories and share their concern over hard work schedules, long separation from families, lack of time to rest and no capacity to contact them at sea. We need to find and create more means for them to call home. That’s why, we’re augmenting our Center’s capacity to make phone calls more accessible and less expensive. We need your help. Important dates to keep in mind. "Returning a Call" from God!

Have you been considering "what if" God was really calling you to serve as a deacon, sister, or priest? Have you been feeling those tugs at your heart? Not sure what to do about them, or even to make sure they are for real? If you think God might be calling you, it's a good idea to at

least return the call. Fr. Brian would love to help. (310) 833-3541.

Annual Ladies Retreat A Mary Star Tradition

The Annual Ladies Retreat at the Sacred Heart Retreat house in Alhambra has a long history with Mary Star of the Sea. From 1950 to 1988 Liberty Albano arranged retreats for the women of the parish, many of them fishermen’s wives and cannery workers. She took as many as 35 retreatants! Sadly she passed away in January of 1988. I took over for Liberty after her death and can safely say that ladies from Mary Star of the Sea have been going on retreat at the Sacred Heart Retreat House for 60 years!!! The Annual Ladies Retreat will be held at the Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra April 9-11, 2010. This is a silent retreat for women only. For information and reservations please call: Patricia Cervantes (310) 519-1045
