The Birthday SongHappy birthday to Mildred J. Hill,

composer of the “Happy Birthday”melody. The Louisville, Ky.,schoolteacher was born on June 27,1859. Hill’s sister, Patty Smith Hill,also a teacher, penned the lyrics,which were first published in 1893 asthe classroom greeting “Good Morningto All.” Now the birthday version of thesong is sung somewhere in the worldevery minute of every day in manylanguages. Here are some festivefacts about the celebratory song:

Birth of “Birthday.” The transition of“Good Morning to All” to “HappyBirthday” is murky, but the “HappyBirthday to You” lyrics first appearedin print in a 1924 songbook. Radioand movies propelled the song’spopularity as a birthday celebrationstaple.

Musical missive. “Happy Birthday”was the message of Western Union’sfirst singing telegram. On July 28,1933, operator Lucille Lipps croonedthe tune to wish Rudy Vallee ahappy 32nd.

Copyright concerns. Jessica Hill,Mildred and Patty’s sister,demonstrated the similarities between“Happy Birthday” and “Good Morningto All” in court and secured thecopyright for her sisters in 1934—toolate for Mildred, who died in 1916.Under current laws, the copyrightprotection for the song will remain ineffect until at least 2030. This meansroyalties are due for publicperformances of the song, but beltingout the ditty at home among familyand friends is free.

How to Do It NowSometimes putting off until

Guidance for Green ShoppingEnvironmentally conscious

consumers seek out Earth-friendlymerchandise. But green credentialsfor products have been falling into agray area. The Federal TradeCommission recently updated itsGreen Guides, advising companiesthat they will need “competent andreliable scientific evidence” to back uptheir environmental claims. Theguidelines also caution against vagueterms such as “eco-friendly.”

From GreenLivingTips.com, hereare some pointers to keep in mind:

Look beyond packaging. A boxmade of 100 percent recycled

cardboard might hold anenvironmentally harmful product.Conversely, an Earth-friendly itemcould be encased in excessive layersof plastic.

Don’t be blinded by good works.Just because a company contributesmoney to an environmental causedoesn’t necessarily mean its productsare good for the planet. The samegoes for companies that sponsorevents.

Beware of buzzwords. Terms suchas “natural,” “organic” and“low-impact” sound good, but thinkabout what they really mean in thecontext of the merchandise theydescribe. Many harmful productstechnically are “natural.”

Check certifications. Third-partycertifications make products lookimpressive, but who’s making theendorsement? Do some researchbefore you deem the product green.

Foods Real Mayonnaise• 1/2 cup prepared salsa• 1 tablespoon lime juice• 1 can (6 ounces) tuna, drained

and flaked• 1 large green onion, thinly sliced• 12 large corn tortilla chips• 3/4 cup shredded cheddar

cheeseIngredients:Combine mayonnaise, salsa and

lime juice in medium bowl; reserve1/2 cup. Stir tuna and green onion intoremaining mayonnaise mixture justuntil combined. Season, if desired,with salt and pepper.

Arrange chips on baking pan. Topwith tuna mixture; then sprinkle withcheese. Broil 1 minute or until cheeseis melted. Dollop with reservedmayonnaise mixture. Garnish, ifdesired, with additional green onions.
