The Nigerian Society of Engineershe Nigerian Society of EngineersPORT HARCOURT BRANCHPORT HARCOURT BRANCH

Engr. Dr. Edet Amana is the 6th President of Nige-rian Academy of Engineering. His investiture took

place at the Main Auditorium, University of Lagos,Akoka, Lagos State on June 10th, 2010.

Engr. Amana: The Academy of Engineering is athink tank which comprises of very distinctive andcelebrated Nigerian engineers; both at home and indiaspora. The aim and objective of the academy isto harness the engineering resources and technol-

ogy in our country and in the world and to supportthe development of our nation. In doing so, weknow that development everywhere in the world is

built by engineering. In my address today (June10th 2010) I talked about the seven wonders in theworld, Im sure you knew about that because wewere all taught this in secondary school. All thoseseven wonders were engineering artifacts. Thecreations by engineers which was so fantastic that

people called them wonders. So engineering hasremained the motivating force in creating and de-veloping the world and the message is that anycountry which want to develop, must appreciatethat they must enthrone engineering as the drivingforce and put in place an enabling environment, legal frame work by which engineering input can

be made to develop economy, to develop infra-structures and so on. Though you asked about me

but what Im talking about is the academy and I

talk about the academy because Im now the chiefspokes man of the academy. About me, Im a con-sulting engineer. I graduated from the ImperialCollege in London and after spending only twoyears in that college, I came top of the first-classhonour list. It has baffled people but it did not baf-fle me because Nigerians always do it. Anywherewe go, we excel. I came first in the Imperial Col-

lege Honour listand I was invited

by my lecturer towork in theirfirm. I havenever had toapply for a job inmy life. Theyalways invite me

because of mycommitment toexcellence. Im atypical Nigerian,

really; Im notsaying that Imspecial, but Im saying this to you because in ourcountry we dont appreciate what we have; and so alot of the things which should be done by localengineers and local contractors, are given to for-eigners and they use our projects to train their ownyoung engineers whereas we dont have projectsyet to train our own. There is no consulting firm in

Nigeria which has gotten up to a hundred engi-neers. Thats a shame because in countries likeGhana, Ghana of yesterday, they have a policy in

place and many local expert firms which were setup only about ten years ago have about two hun-

dred engineers. Its a crying shame and the mes-

sage which we are trying to get across is this mustchange. In our country we must begin to dependon our own because that it is the only sustainable

    way to development.

E-Newsletter: Thank you very much Sir. For the period you are going to serve as the President ofthe academy, what are your expectations?

Engr. Amana: We shall do all that we can to gthis message across to the government; both texecutive and the legislative arms of governmenthat they must enthrone engineering as the driviforce in development. We are going to work at tendowment because if we dont do research wcannot develop. So, the academy is going to do that it can to develop an in-depth research of ocountry. We hope during the period of my tenure get a charter; to get the academy charter throu

parliament so that we will have official recognitias the driving force behind engineering and tecnology in our country. So we got a very good pr

gramme and by Gods grace and the support of stakeholders we hope to get there.

E-Newsletter: Thank you very sir for the audienyou granted us.

    Engr. Amana: Thank you.
