Dear Parishioners, This past Monday, February 3, we remembered St. Blase who was a bishop in the early fourth century in present day Armenia. Christians were still persecuted at this time, and many were killed for their faith. Legend has it that Blase was in a cave praying when he was found by hunters who captured him and brought him back to be punished by the authorities. On his way back, a young mother brought a son who had a fish bone stuck in his throat. Blase ordered the bone out, and the young boy was saved. The young mother brought candles to Blase as he awaited his sentence in a dark cell. Thus, we bless throats on his day, using candles in remembrance of St. Blase. But who really saved the young boy's life that day? Of course we know that it was Jesus. In these winter days we have the cold and flu season and much more spreading as usual in the Chicago area, and we are also very much aware of the deadly virus that has hit China. Yes, it is always good to take the necessary precau-tions for good health, but also we must include prayers. The Feast of St. Blase reminds us to pray to St. Blase, bish-op and martyr, to intercede on all who are hurting, physi-cally, mentally, or spiritually. The late basketball great Kobe Bryant regularly took time to pray in his local Catholic Church each Sunday, as he did on the day of his tragic and sudden death. Yes, we are nev-er too big to acknowledge our need for prayer and guid-ance. Yes, no matter what obstacles are before us we must try to reach out to our neighbor. May he and all who died rest in peace. We pray for his family and all who feel his loss. A small group of parishioners have been reading together Divine Renovation by Father James Mallon on Monday nights beginning at 7 p.m. in Room 2 of the school. Two more sessions are left – Monday, February 10 and 17th. Fa-ther Mallon outlines a blueprint for parishes to go beyond maintaining their buildings and meeting the needs of their parishioners. We will adopt the strategies and tips he rec-ommends after the parishes are reconfigured by the Renew My Church initiative. We offer this book club to help all parishioners begin to embrace this new reality which make our parish alive and relevant. Once again, I encourage you to attend our Mardi Gras Gala celebration on Saturday, February 22, in the Fr. May Min-istry Center. We will honor in a special way John Mazur, our Director of Maintenance, Denise Gillespie, and Fatima Fernandes. This is the singular event of the year when we all gather to celebrate the blessings of our parish and

school. Tickets are on sale in the school office. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 26. It is always a busy time in parish life, and this year promises to be no different. Our Theme is “Easter Brings Hope – Restorative Justice.” Please notice that we not only do we have what I believe will be an inspiring calendar of events planned dur-ing Lent, but we also have the promise of new initiatives within our parish as we continue with our task force groups. Niech on i wszyscy, którzy zginęli, spoczywają w pokoju.

Pozostały jeszcze dwie sesje - poniedziałek, 10 i 17 lutego. Ks. Jeszcze raz zachęcam do wzięcia udziału w uroczystej Gali Mardi Gras w sobotę 22 lutego w Centrum Duszpasterskim. W szczególny sposób uhonorujemy Johna Mazura, naszego dyrektora ds. Konserwacji i Utrzymania, Denise Gillespie i Fatimę Fernandes. Mike Meany

CHRISTMAS GIFT PROGRAM - SVdP ST. JOHN BREBEUF CONFERENCE In keeping with our 47-year-old tradition, our society provides Christmas gifts to those in the inner-city who are in need of a Christmas present. For some this will be the only gift they may receive. We keep in touch with seven main groups and distribute over 660 gifts during a 4-week period. We contact St. Malachy, Marillac House, St. Anthony, St. John Berchmans, H.O.M.E., Heather's House and our local families in early September. We give them forms to fill out indicating what the child or adult would like for Christmas. The forms are returned by mid November. Then the next 2 weeks we are in the vestibule of our Church, helping people select forms.

People are really excited to find a slip based on name, age, sex and selection. It is suggested to spend between $30-35 per gift. Hundreds of generous parishioners participate in this SVdP project. The first 2 weeks of December the gifts are returned at the offertory of the Mass. It is very gratifying to witness people coming forward with their wrapped presents in the spirit of giving. After that we sort the gifts and put them in 55 gallon heavy duty bags. This year we had over 50 bags and made six trips to the above locations.

The SVdP team at St. John Brebeuf. New team members are always needed & welcomed!

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2020 Begins February 15-16

Come, follow me… and heal our world

Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal request mailing from Cardi-nal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes, and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible.

The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me… and heal our world.”

As we contemplate God’s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude. Your financial support for the work of our parish, our archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal.
