8/22/2012 NEK Junior Golf Tour: Champions To Be Decided At Jay BY JIM FULLER Sports Writer JAY -- The fourth and final stop for the Northeast Kingdom Junior Golf Tour is Thursday at Jay Peak Golf Club. Still on the line is the overall points championship in each age group. Tyler Smith, Alex Giroux, Sam King, and Dana Marsh are all in the hunt for the boys age 12-15 top spot; Jack King and Austin Giroux will vie for the top spot in the 8-11 group; and Olivia King and Katie Goulet will decide the girls. Smith won the first event at Newport Country Club, but Alex Giroux has won the last two -- at St. Johnsbury Country Club and Orleans Country Club. Sam King (at St. J) and Marsh (at Orleans) have both taken second. Jack King has a win under his belt at St. J and Austin Giroux has been second in each of the last two events. After Goulet won at Newport, Olivia King has won the last two girls events. While each course on the tour so far has had its share of challenging moments for the golfer, Thursday's event at Jay Peak should provide the most challenging golf on the tour. "I think it's going to be a little bit different level of golf for the kids," Jay Peak pro Dave Jankowski said. "I'm looking forward to see how they handle the course. "We're going to move the tee markers up ... some of them way up." While certain areas of the fairways will be turned into tee boxes, Jankowski said it isn't a comment on the quality of golf he has observed in the first three events. "I thought a lot of kids were going to have trouble with the yardage," Jankowski said, "but it's been no problem." Jankowski said the success of the first-year tour has surprised him "a bit. It just shows me it's not just a fad that kids are trying out. The parents have been very supportive as well. I think the parents are just as excited as the kids. "I think the whole season has been a success," Jankowski added. "It's created

NEK Junior Golf Tour: Champions To Be Decided At JayBY JIM FULLERSports Writer

JAY -- The fourth and final stop for the Northeast Kingdom Junior Golf Tour is Thursday at Jay Peak Golf Club.

"We're going to move the tee markers up ... some of them way up."

While certain areas of the fairways will be turned into tee boxes, Jankowski said it isn't a comment on the quality of golf he has observed in the first three events. "I thought a lot of kids were going to have trouble with the yardage," Jankowski said, "but it's been no problem."

Jankowski said the success of the first-year tour has surprised him "a bit. It just shows me it's not just a fad that kids are trying out. The parents have been very supportive as well. I think the parents are just as excited as the kids.

"I think the whole season has been a success," Jankowski added. "It's created a lot of buzz.

"I think it's going to elevate the junior golf programs tremendously."

The tour has showcased many area golfers who, for one reason or another, haven't played in the statewide tour. The confidence they are gaining is evident.

"I don't want to name just one name," Jankowski said, "but Jack King -- next year he's going to start playing in state stuff and people are going to say, 'Whoa, where did this kid come

from'?

"It's exactly what this was supposed to do."

In a relaxed atmosphere, 33 to 37 golfers have turned out for each event. "It's about the friendly nature of it," Jankowski said. "It teaches kids how to play the game of golf correctly -- pulling the flag out; letting your partner go first; and teaching kids the ethics of the game."

The competitors will play holes 1 through 9 beginning at 1 p.m. Following play, there will be a trophy presentation for each overall champion and silver and bronze medals for those finishing second and third.

Community National Bank will provide the food for the barbecue that will celebrate the end of the junior tour for 2012.
