Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise Page | 1 I have to start this week by thanking all who came out and helped with the CanTeen Fun Day last Sunday. Personally, I had a fantastic time with all the volunteers and kids from CanTeen and am so pleased we as a club went ahead with this event. It was an amazing feeling when all the kids, volunteers and parents thanked us for putting the day on. Days like this remind you why you are part of Rotary and the Magill Sunrise club. We started the day by cooking a BBQ for the kids and volunteers including those from Rotary...thanks Chef Ian, you did a great job. The kids from CanTeen then broke in to groups and took part in team building activities and challenges where they earnt points from which a winner was announced at the end of the day. The last activity involved all the kids as a whole and had them work as a large team to complete a challenge. Mina and Julie joined in the fun while I went around and took photos. At day’s end we were presented the lovely framed certificate that I passed around on Tuesday. An amazing day, I hope we can do something similar again in future years. Tuesday’s meeting saw our NYSF representative Lucy-Marie Sylvestri come back to the club to share her experiences in Canberra with us. She is an amazingly confident girl who was very impressive with the way she spoke about her time away to the club. If she doesn’t pursue a career in science I am sure she will find a career path that involves public speaking of some kind. Lucy-Marie told us that she was put into in the Pauling Chemistry Group (named after Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling) on arrival and spoke of the fun they had making liquid slime and shooting balloons with an actual laser beam. We found out that when in a common group of 400 odd students from all over Australia, being a NERD can be cool. She described all the fun they had at dinners and a disco where all students dressed up, some as star wars characters others as things such as sub atomic particles? They also got to see a little of Canberra, visiting the War Museum and Parliament House. It was a bit disappointing that her presentation did not work on our laptop as it would have made awesome viewing, but she made up for this answering questions with confidence from our members. As I said earlier, this girl is right at home talking in front of people. We are glad the NYSF experience was a rewarding one for Lucy-Marie and we appreciate her coming back to share this with us. See you all next week. President greg President greg President greg President greg

I have to start this week by thanking all who came out and helped with the CanTeen Fun Day last Sunday.

Personally, I had a fantastic time with all the volunteers and kids from CanTeen and am so pleased we as a

club went ahead with this event. It was an amazing feeling when all the kids, volunteers and parents

thanked us for putting the day on. Days like this remind you why you are part of Rotary and the Magill

Sunrise club.

We started the day by cooking a BBQ for the kids and volunteers including those from Rotary...thanks Chef

Ian, you did a great job. The kids from CanTeen then broke in to groups and took part in team building

activities and challenges where they earnt points from which a winner was announced at the end of the day.

The last activity involved all the kids as a whole and had them work as a large team to complete a challenge.

Mina and Julie joined in the fun while I went around and took photos. At day’s end we were presented the

lovely framed certificate that I passed around on Tuesday. An amazing day, I hope we can do something

similar again in future years.

Tuesday’s meeting saw our NYSF representative Lucy-Marie Sylvestri come back to the club to share her

experiences in Canberra with us. She is an amazingly confident girl who was very impressive with the way

she spoke about her time away to the club. If she doesn’t pursue a career in science I am sure she will find a

career path that involves public speaking of some kind.

Lucy-Marie told us that she was put into in the Pauling Chemistry Group (named after Nobel Prize winner

Linus Pauling) on arrival and spoke of the fun they had making liquid slime and shooting balloons with an

actual laser beam. We found out that when in a common group of 400 odd students from all over Australia,

being a NERD can be cool. She described all the fun they had at dinners and a disco where all students

dressed up, some as star wars characters others as things such as sub atomic particles? They also got to see

a little of Canberra, visiting the War Museum and Parliament House. It was a bit disappointing that her

presentation did not work on our laptop as it would have made awesome viewing, but she made up for this

answering questions with confidence from our members. As I said earlier, this girl is right at home talking in

front of people.

We are glad the NYSF experience was a rewarding one for Lucy-Marie and we appreciate her coming back to

share this with us. See you all next week.

Australian History

1852 – The First Gold Escort returns wealth from the Victorian goldfields to the South Australian

colony.

1932 – The Sydney Harbour Bridge is officially opened, amidst unexpected controversy.

World History

1942 – The American aircraft carrier, USS Franklin, is dive-bombed by a kamikaze Japanese aircraft,

killing 724.

Thought for the Day 1: Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you

with experience.

Thought for the Day 2: Inside every older person is a younger person … wondering what the hell

happened.

Julie, for telling me she was late and it was 8.05am.

Me, for saying the time was 8.05am when it was actually 7.05am!!

Greg, for working in IT and not being able to get a printer to print straight.

And for being a greedy guts and going up for seconds at breakfast.

And for not wearing the President's chain.

Wayne, for not accepting the standard garden sheds at Stratco, but wanting a window on his.

Mark T, for sounding like the Pope during the invocation and for not beating me (Mina) from the

Clubrooms to Fullarton Road in his car last Tuesday (hey, I was cycling).

Carol, for being ‘pooed’ on by a bird within first 2 minutes of being at the CanTeen Fun Day on

Sunday.

Lindsay, for no name badge today.

Anyone who didn't have one of Gary's lovely burgers with sweet chilli sauce.

Cross Fines and Happy Bucks (yes, Bronny is back on track)

A reminder to everyone that our club has committed to assisting with the RYDA (Rotary Youth

Driver Awareness) day being held on the Thursday, 23rd May, starting around 9.30 am and

finishing around 2.30 at the Campbelltown Youth Centre, Botanic Grove Campbelltown, (just off

Lower North East Rd).

We need helpers, who can assist in the teachers and instructors, rounding the students up and

handing out fruit/water etc. for recess.

If you can help (you may be in need of some updated driving tips yourself), please get back to me.
