Dear Family of Union Lutheran, Each Sunday you come forward to receive the Lord’s Supper. This weekly reception of The Lord’s Supper is fairly recent within the last two years. You went from receiving the Sacra-ment on the first and third Sundays and on Festival Sundays to weekly. The two non-Sundays are: Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday. I have had a number of members ask me why we receive the Sacrament every Sunday. Let me ask you a question. Does your body crave meals every day? That is a silly question! Of course, you do! In terms of the frequency of participating in the Lord’s Supper I need to ask you Who it is that wants you to come to His supper? It is the Lord Jesus Himself. He actually gave a command to receive His supper. His command says: And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remem-brance of me. Luke : 9 ESV Starting this Sunday, I am going have a short Teaching Moment that is based on The Small Catechism by Martin Luther Below is the explanation of Holy Communion as written in the Small Catechism by Martin Lu-ther. THE INSTITUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION First: What is the sa ra e t of Holy Co u io ? It is the true ody a d lood of our Lord Jesus Christ u der the read a d i e, i stituted y Christ for us Christia s to eat a d to dri k. Where is this ritte ? The holy E a gelists Matthe , Mark, Luke, a d the Apostle Paul tell us: Our Lord Jesus Christ, o the ight he as etrayed, took read; a d he he had gi e tha ks, he roke it a d ga e it to his dis iples, sayi g, "Take a d eat; this is y ody, hi h is gi e for you. Do this i re e ra e of e." The he took the up, ga e tha ks, a d ga e it to the , sayi g, "Dri k fro it, all of you; this is y

lood of the e o e a t, hi h is poured out for you for the forgi e ess of si s. Do this, he -e er you dri k it, i re e ra e of e."

THE BLESSINGS OF HOLY COMMUNION Se o d: What lessi g do e re ei e through this eati g a d dri ki g? That is sho us y these ords, "Gi e a d poured out for you for the forgi e ess of si s." Through these ords e re ei e forgi e ess of si s, life, a d sal atio i this sa ra e t. For

here there is forgi e ess of si s, there is also life a d sal atio .

THE POWER OF HOLY COMMUNION Third: How can eating and drinking do such great things? It is certainly not the eating and drinking that does such things, but the words, "Given and poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. "These words are the main thing in this sacrament, along with the eating and drinking. And whoever believes these words has what they plainly say, the forgiveness of sins. THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION Fourth: Who, then, is properly prepared to receive this sacrament? Fasting and other outward preparations may serve a good purpose, but he is properly prepared who believes these words, "Given and poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins." But whoev-er does not believe these words or doubts them is not prepared, because the words "for you" re-quire nothing but hearts that believe. Pastor Corbell’s Personal Reflections I have thought a lot about our gathering on August 9th as we looked at Healthy and Unhealthy Characteristics of Congregations. We also dealt with personal and sensitive issues i.e. the emo-tional responses to the announcement that your Music Director was no longer with you, staff possibilities, the problems that come with miscommunication, the Narthex project, the complex handing of money with over 5 different funds. I was thrilled with individuals who shared their thoughts. I want to especially acknowledge Feli-saty Morgan who spoke so eloquently about the youth of Union, and specifically how they are supported. In some ways her words were prophetic. I honestly feel that the Lord has blessed me through my experience at Union. There are so many wonderful Christians here, and I believe that Jesus has a bright future for you. As of this writing I don’t know how long I will be your Interim. I do know Who holds our future! To God be the glory, Pastor Corbell

Greetings,

This summer has certainly flown by. School will start soon, the days will become a little shorter and the weather will cool off some. I am thankful for the change of seasons. Fall is my favorite time of the year. The changes I see around me are a reminder of how great God is and in all things we should give God the Glory for His wondrous works.

The Union Women officers will be meeting on Monday August 26th to discuss business for the remainder of this year. Some new officers are needed for 2019. So give this prayerful consideration, please. God calls us to serve Him in lots of ways. Listen and be ready to answer, “here I am Lord….through God’s gift of the Holy Spirit I, You, We can do all things". Your group president will fill you in on our discussion, ideas and decisions at your September meeting. The Anna Petrea Group will start a new study: "The Purpose of Christmas” led by Gennene Parker. This study will continue right on till Christmas. The next meeting will be at church in the Educational Building on Tuesday, September 4th at 6:30 pm. A "Bagged Dinner” will be served. Hope to see lots of our members and of course guest are always welcome. The Mary and Martha group will meet on Tuesday, September 4th at 2:00 pm at the church. Blessings to all, Cathy Kluttz Painther

GRANDMA'S HANDS

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands. When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. 'Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking,' she said in a clear voice strong. 'I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,' I explained to her. 'Have you ever looked at your hands,' she asked. 'I mean really looked at your hands?' I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making. Grandma smiled and related this story: 'Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. 'They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war. 'They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse. 'They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of any-thing else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. 'These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life. 'But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of God.' I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my Grandma's hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of Grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.
