I must admit, I hit the wall on Sunday after 5 nights of fun and frivolity courtesy of the jam-packed RLWYC calendar. While members enjoyed many of our tried and true events, there were also some new twists to our favourites. Shelagh Hare and Ellen Brodigan put a new spin on the Ladies’ Event, we had a wonderful time sipping Tom Collins cocktails and visiting local vendors' booths in support of Saakate House. On Thursday night, just when we thought the evening couldn’t get any better, Mother Nature provided a spectacular display of Northern Lights as a special gift to those celebrating 1966. Saturday’s Three Island Swim initiated the next generation of swimmers with the Minnow Barge bursting at the seams with little Rish. Thank you Don, Catherine and Fiona for taking the Three Island Swim to the next level. The infamous Yacht Club Dance did not disappoint. Chef Cory and his culinary team served a delicious meal of beef tenderloin for guests before they packed the dance Rloor to the revel the night away. As we bid farewell to our July family and friends, we welcome a new crew for August. The fun continues at the RLWYC, and the Rirst week of August is chock-full of events. Join Carolyn and Larry Hursh for a round at the 10th Annual Members' Golf Tournament; Thursday Night Dinner hosted by the BanRield/Sawchyn/Lount clan is sure to be sold out; channel your artistic side with Pippi in her Advanced Painting class on Friday; on Saturday pack a picnic and join the Power Squadron for a trip down the lake. Be sure to sign the kids up for Gymkhana on Sunday, Nancy Cipryk and Kirsten McConnell have some surprises in store. Phew! I don’t know how we pack it all in. Thank you to our fabulous volunteers who make our time at the Club so memorable; not to mention the staff who work hard to execute every detail in hopes of making members' experience at the RLWYC the best it can be. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Commodore Lisa Heimbecker - (Please see “This Week In Pictures”)

One of the most prestigious sailing races in the Club calendar is The Kenora Cup. First presented in 1906 for the race around Coney Island the tradition lives on 110 years later as 11 intrepid racers embarked on the showcase race during Kenora's annual Harbourfest.

The wind blew directly out of the south and 10 of the 11 boats headed off in the traditional counter clockwise direction. Jim Richardson wisely

took the highest course above Eskapeepa while RL 1 and RL 45 took a lower route This picture shows Jim Richardson battling it out with Sandy Riley on the downwind.

Don Konantz then made his move and was able to pass the two leading scows in the approach to Cameron Narrows and through Town Bay around Bush Island which is where the race was won. As you can see in the photo Don really turned it on in Town Bay!

Th is race is no t always about the scows, and we had s o m e v e r y competitive sailing from two Lasers, a

Laser 2, 3 Feva's and a 420. In fact, Jeff Parkhill sailing with his amazing eight year old son Kingsley placed third on corrected time. Jeff, it is time that Kings learned to fly a kite! Just imagine!!

The Feva's, as usual, were lots of fun. If Tory and I had not turtled the boat within 200 meters of the start, I am sure that we would have won! If Matt and Charlie Wilson had not capsized right in Cameron Narrows, they might have won too!

John Nicolls and his mum were the first of the Feva's to finish having sailed a consistent race, then making out like bandits on the final upwind, well done!

Ted Parkhill brought his usual enthusiasm and verve to the racecourse in a Laser while John Sykes brought an international flavour to the event after travelling all the way from Australia just to sail in the Kenora Cup and he also managed to fit in the Canadian celebration of his daughter's recent wedding while he was here sailing.

Finally, Dylan "wrong way" Moll and Connor "clockwise" Stewart represented the sailing instructors by taking out 420 and sailing it well, it is great to see the culture of racing being transmitted to the sailing programs as racing really promotes excellence in sail handling and seamanship.

Ultimately, Don Konantz, Catherine and their two slightly worse for wear sons Willy and Geoff were able to translate a brilliant downwind/upwind transition through Town Bay into an impressive victory. Well done team Konantz on their aptly named scow "E motion"

Next week the best of our junior racers head to the Manitoba Summer Games, we wish them the best of luck competing at West Hawk. Meanwhile

the Scows will compete for the Galt Cup on Sunday at 1:00.

I hear a rumour that the adult sailing on Friday afternoon is going to have a high level of participation with a great group of people, so if you have been on the fence or thinking it might be a fun thing to do, go for it, the RC Sailing might even buy you an adult beverage afterward as a reward for giving it a shot!

TENNIS NEWS Hi everyone!

Week 5 has quickly come and gone. I hope everyone that attended the Yacht Club Dance had a great time.

This week we have two tournaments. The Junior Tournament on Monday August 1st, and the Angie Ferguson on August 6th. The Angie Ferguson is a fun tournament where pairs are made with an adult and a 12 and under player. The sign-up sheet is on the tennis board.

Those that signed up for the Junior Challenger this week, check the tennis board for match ups. The Junior Challenger is a weekly competition designed to pair equal opponents together. Once I’ve matched opponents, they have to figure out a time when they can battle it out on the courts. Match play is what tennis is all about after all! Sign up on the tennis board if you are interested. This is for ages 9 – 15.

Well my Japanese friend must hate Djokovic this week as he beat Nishikori 7-5 6-3 at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. And speaking of Roger, Roger Federer is going to be out for the rest of the year due to an injury. Federer is focusing on the long term as he hopes to play for a few more years at least.

If you would like any more information about any of our classes, or are interested in private or semi-private lessons email me at [email protected].

REMEMBER

To reduce waste please bring a reusable water bottle for tennis.

It was a great day Saturday as 90 swimmers took to the water including 9 relay teams for the 28th Annual RLWYC three island swim around Kalamalka Island, Gourley’s Island and returning to the Yacht Club. It was bucolic summer weather: +27C, gentle south breeze, bluebird. The Yacht Club dock was teeming with 200+ spotters, spectators, swimmers & minnows.

Larry Kyle tightened the bolt again with a further 0:25 off his best previous time. Larry has improved his time in each of his last four swims. However, Larry was beaten by more than 3 minutes by McKenzie Holden McLeod, a first timer, whose family grew up on Gun Club Island across from Paterson's. McKenzie has completed his school at Dalhousie University and recently competed at the Canadian trials for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games at Rio. He bested the three island swim course record of Stuart Starkey of 33:15 set in 2001 by swimming a blistering 33:10.Unreal.Larrywas2ndandKyleTheissen(age14)wasthird.Therewere28malecompetitors-arecord.

A new development for 2016 was the advent of the “Minnows" - inspired by the Granny Barge from 2007. These were 20 under-10-year-olds who swam a 20 person relay off a barge. Their time was 1:29 ... so fun. We know they will be back as it was such fun and a focus for their July training in the Yacht Club swimming program. Thank you to Fiona Colegrave for her leadership in setting up the Minnow Barge. After 28 years of recruiting the courageous types at cottages, Fiona and I have opened up a new front which is to draft those for whom there is no fear.

Of the 9 relays, the fastest was completed in a fastest-ever 42:03 by three 13 year-olds. Congratulations to Zoe Weibe, Avery Johannessen & Sam Thiessen. Incredible that they were the fastest relay last year as well - at 12 years of age.

Only four swimmers improved their times over previous years, but the best of these was Greg Southgate knocked awhopping14:25offhispreviousbest timeearningthecovetedMost ImprovedAwardandaboxofCheerios. Hole In One Updatefromlastweek’sOverwaterClassicJohnWlodarczykonfarrightachievedawholeinoneattheCyprikCamp.SeenherewithhisteamofIanThorlakson,KenHamin,JasonCrosby&KimCrosby.

A few tips from the Harbour Master The season is in full swing, our camps are full, and all our lake friends are here - please review the tips below to make it easier for

everyone to enjoy our RLWYC. When heading over to the club please…

Consider boat pooling to events and programs, particularly at peek times. Bring smaller craft to the club as they are more manageable for the dock hands and require less space. Pull your craft forward and create space for three boats on each side of the finger. Tie your boat properly so that it doesn't rub adjacent boats or come loose.

Thanks in advance! Andrew McLandress

A Day To Remember…by Rod NichollsYou may have noticed that the club was a little less busy on Monday the 25th, the docks had fewer boats, not as many kids in programs, bar revenue way down...What was going on?

Well, there was a little case of Lake fever happening, it started spreading on the weekend and by Monday morning 12 boats met at Wilson's dock and West of Whiskey Island to go an a major Sable Island run.

Led by lake legends Dave Kyle and Dan Treadway we headed on the South Track, through French Portage Narrows and Tug Channel. We only lost one boat along the way to overheating but the Meads Spruce Island Camp Sabskosing

Bay (http://www.spruceislandcamp.com/) went above and beyond and loaned them a 25 Hp kicker allowing them to putt home so no one had to do the long tow home at the beginning of the day.

After crossing a very windy Little Traverse Bay, the crew stopped for a swim between Dawson and Bigsby Island where one more boat joined them restoring our numbers to 12 boats. From there we braved the big wind to complete the voyage to the Sable Islands. The conditions were actually not too bad and our long string of speedboats followed in each others wake through the slop.

When we arrived at Sable, because of the prevailing wind, we decided to try to get around the back side which no one in our group had done before. We followed the shoreline to the channel that separates the USA from Canada and with Ontario to Port and Minnesota to

Starboard we entered the calm shallow March South of Sable Islands. we putted our way past the Marsh and rafted up on the backside of the Islands, a perfectly protected anchorage.

Once we landed, picnics and coolers were hauled ashore, we headed to the North side to catch the breeze. Children went exploring, beach pong and beach rugby were played, and lots of swimming. The water was 25 degrees at least, one of my kids must have spent 15 minutes on land and the rest in the water.

What a mellow day where old friends caught up on the minutiae of life, new friends got to know each other and everyone's blood pressure was reduced by the zen of the beach.

At around 5:00, the group shot was taken, can you count how many heads? we think there are over 70! The group split up a bit for the ride home, some choosing to head straight back, thinking that they had enough fuel and others heading to Oak to fuel up and perhaps enjoy a libation, thinking that they knew all the rocks on the way home!

At the end of the day we all made it home safely, and what goes on the lake stays on the lake, so that's the end of my story!
