DAY

2Monday, Nov. 6Gen. Oglethorpe, Savannah History Part 1

This morning, meet historic reenactor Gen. James Oglethorpe, who portrays the original general with incredible accuracy. Drawn from the pages of journals, diaries and letters, learn about the early years of the “Georgia Experiment.” After lunch at a local restaurant, experience an expert-led walking field trip in the Historic District. Start at the Massie Heritage Center, Georgia's first public school, then discover some of the district's most picturesque squares and connect the places to the stories about the people and events that have defined Savannah.

DAY

3Tuesday, Nov.7Savannah History Part 2, Isaiah Davenport House

This morning, continue discovering Savannah's compelling people, places and events, starting with an overview from our historian in the hotel. Then head out on another walking field trip to experience even more of the picturesque Historic District. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon walking field trip to one of Savannah's most iconic houses of worship, the majestic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, home of the Diocese of Savannah. Next, it's on to the Isaiah Davenport House. During an exclusive presentation for our group, hear on-site experts reveal a detailed look into the fascinating aspects of 19th-century Savannah people and events, especially as related to urban slavery. Gain insight into the stark juxtaposition of life for the privileged and free as opposed to the disadvantaged and enslaved.

DAY

4Wednesday, Nov. 8Colonial Customs, Free Time

After breakfast, our historian relates stories of colonial customs and traditions, as practiced by the new country's earliest citizens. The Colonial era extended from the founding of Georgia in 1733 until the Revolutionary War. The last of the original 13 colonies, Georgia’s early experience was markedly different from the rest. After lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy a free afternoon to explore Savannah. Dinner will be on your own to explore local cuisine.

DAY

5Thursday, Nov. 9Johnny Mercer Concert, Interactive Southern Cooking Class

This morning, delight in a musical presentation featuring the songs of Savannah's own Johnny Mercer. Between songs, learn about the man behind the music and the life behind those timeless lyrics. After lunch, travel via trolley to a local cooking school for an interactive demonstration of Lowcountry cooking with opportunities for hands-on participation. Learn how to prepare popular local and regional specialties as Chef Darin gives us valuable tips — spiced with humorous wit — from his vast experience. The star of the menu is shrimp and grits with red-eye gravy, among other Southern-inspired dishes your taste buds will relish. Tonight, enjoy a Farewell Dinner.

DAY

6Friday, Nov. 10Popular American Songs, Program Concludes

After breakfast, be joined by a talented balladeer and music historian who will tell us behind-the-music stories of some popular American songs as he plays and sings. You are invited to join in! Program concludes prior to lunch.
