One of Europe’s leading festivals

In July, Hindsgavl Festival will take place for the 50th time at Hindsgavl Castle, where both musicians and audience stay in the castle a few days of their choice and form a little musical community that truly deserves the most stunning surroundings in Denmark. There is a fantastic atmosphere and a perfect serenity.

Take a swim in the ocean, a jog in the forest, attend open rehearsals, enjoy the gastronomy and not least the concerts. After the concerts the bar in the old main building will open, but there is also the possibility of sitting on the beach jetty in the moonlight, listening to the porpoises and enjoying the midnight magic in the park.

It is hard to believe that this gem is still largely undiscovered by non-Danes, but we do get increased attention from the rest of Europe.

Hence, in 2017 Hindsgavl Festival was praised in Germanys biggest newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, as one of Europe’s leading festivals with a range of artists and a program

which the past seasons could easily compete with the best 3-4 festivals in Europe.

We are confident that this year’s program will not disappoint.

Hindsgavl Festival has three concert series: International Artists (the full concerts at 20:00), Rising Stars (mainly matinées) and Contemporary Music (mainly late-night soirées). On the following pages, the series are color-marked like this:

All in all, we are very much looking forward to eight enchanting days on Hindsgavl Castle. Pick one or more days from the program and get an unforgettable musical vacation in the heart of Denmark.

Best wishes,

“….the performer at the harpsichord was Kristian Bezuidenhout, a musician who could probably conjure sweetmusic from a piece of dry toast…” Geoff Brown, The Times, 18 May 2017

South African born Kristian Bezuidenhout has contributed greatly in the way we listen to wiener classics today. He is as much at home with the modern grand piano as with the cembalo or fortepiano, but when he becameacquainted with the latter in the course of his studies, everything seemed to be in place:

“(The fortepiano) is unbelievably refined, with this light, delicate, sort of un-user friendly action. It’s so small, but it just resonates with me somehow. And perhaps it also embodies what it means to play Mozart in my mind.”

In particular, it is his award-winning recordings of all Mozart's piano works on Fortepiano that gave him a breakthrough as one of the world's leading fortepianists.

This extraordinary afternoon at Hindsgavl, Beethoven is on the program.

In the evening concert we meet old friends of Hindsgavl; some will probably remember Martin Helmchen and Marie-Elisabeth Hecker for an amazing concert at Hindsgavl in 2016. A third splendid Hindsgavl-artist (also on the festival in 2016), Veronika Eberle, will join in with the outstanding Russian-German viola player with the infectious energy, Tatjana Masurenko. All in all a super team to perform two masterpieces of chamber music literature: The second of Brahms' three piano quartets and Schumann’s one and only.

As per tradition, the first day on the festival will end with a musical party. This year, the Danish klezmerbandMames Babegenousch will induce good vibrations into the big chandelier of the Garden Room.

Original Beethoven sound and classic piano quartets

17:15 Pre-concert talk (in Danish by Valdemar Lønsted)18:00 Dinner

A great lied evening awaits when Mark Padmore and Kristian Bezuidenhout on fortepiano performSchuberts heartbreaking Schwanengesang alongside the lesser known but just as passionate lovesongs by Beethoven.

In the past 20 years Mark Padmore has positioned himself as one of the absolut leading singers of hisgeneration praised for interpretations that combine strong emotional intensity with an intellectualapproach to text and music. During his career he has worked with some of the finest lied pianists andhe gives his recent collaboration with Kristian Bezuidenhout these comments:

”What I’ve found in his playing is what I’ve looked for myself: that very, very special blending of thepoetry in the words with the poetry in the music. My ultimate goal is that we can both deliver this in aconcert”….” But there is more to it, like Kristian playing on old pianos, one of his many virtues. He hashis unique way of exploiting those ravishing tone colours, the subtleties he can bring to it, and theexcitement we both experience when hearing new sounds from such an old instrument…”

The instrument used for the concert at Hindsgavl is an original Austrian Graf fortepiano from 1830,from the Edwin Beunk collection in Enschede, Netherlands.

On The Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, a guitar quartet was admitted in 2015 to theadvanced postgraduate soloist level – quite unusual. Hindsgavl Festivals ‘informants’ persuaded us tobook the four Polish artists before winning the prestigious chamber music competition of the DanishBroadcasting Corporation in November 2017. Same month as their debut from the Academy. Thequartet will perform Spanish/Latin music in the intimate Garden Room of the castle, where all the finedetails of the delicate instruments may be fully enjoyed.

The First and Second Viennese School are contrasted in the first half of this evenings program as representedby Schubert and Webern, respectively. Weberns six bagatelles for string quartet are composed in thetransition from late romanticism to 12-tone music. Everything superfluous has been stripped from the musicleaving only the most essential tones. For this reason every bagatel each lasts around one minute – anddeserves a replay as done in this program after a shot of Schubert. Perhaps we listen differently to the sameWebern piece after an antidote?

However, the main musical main course of the day is undoubtedly Schuberts wonderful octet which isperformed by a dream team of historic conscious artists with violinist Isabelle Faust in the lead.

The evening concert at 20:00 is framed by spectacular performances by the Danish accordeonist AndreasBorregaard. In 2017 he had some of Europas most prominent contemporary composers dedictate three ”Solo-Acts” to him. We will hear two of them: The bizarre and energitic SELF-CARE by Irish Jennifer Walshe, and thepoetic-ingenious study of breathing, Asthma, by Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen. Both pieces areperformed with video.

A careful selection of talents is presented in a series of short concerts of between 40 og 60 minutes.

We begin in the Garden Room of the castle where we get close to a remarkable recorder phenomenon, 18 year oldLucie Horsch from the Netherlands who already has an impressive musical career: Contract with the label DECCAand winner of numerous prices and competitions. Lucie performs with the best, a.o. pianist Julius Drake (Hindsgavl2015) and lute player Thomas Dunford. And it is with the latter, the ”Eric Clapton of the Lute” (sorry about that quote– it is from BBC Music Magazine) that we shall hear Lucie this afternoon in an early music program.

Before and after dinner we have an all French section. First with two young Danes who in September 2017 took aleap to further studies abroad: Clarinettist Jonas Frølund now studies at the Supérieur Conservatory in Paris andpianist Francesco Barfoed went to Barfoed Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA.

The French section continues after dinner with (yet!) another formidable string quartet from France. Quatuor Zaïdeplays the rarely programmed César Franck string quartet from 1890.

With a network of prominent younger composers throughout Northern Europe, Karin Hellqvist and Heloise Amaralset new standards for the sound of the classical constellation of a violin-piano duo. And there seems to be noborders: In one performance the two musicians will slowly rise from the podium to end up under the ceiling. Atleast, this is what is intended. Here we are literally dealing with rising stars.

The matinée concert presents Dutch mezzosoprano Christianne Stotijn accompanied by Joseph Breinlin a captivating program, ”The Poet’s Echo”, named after Benjamin Brittens song cycle and withexpressive texts by great poets like Pushkin, Rilke and Dickinson.

Stotijn studied violin and voice at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. After obtaining her solo violindiploma she continued her vocal studies. Especially in the years 2005-2007 her singing career took offwith a.o. ECHO Rising Stars Award, the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and as a BBC New GenerationArtist.

The evening concert offers an unusual ”all-Bach” program with Concerto Copenhagen. In the socalledDialogue Cantatas Bach approached a genre which was quite unusual for him: The Chamber Opera. The dialogues of the cantatas between Jesus and The Soul are a direct conversation between maincharacters without a narrator – a concept that very much resembles the contemporary operacompositions with its mood changes from deepest sorrow to divine happiness. These aspects ofdrama and dialogue have elevated the cantatas to something unique within Bachs many contributionsto the genre. The evenings ”all-Bach” program also contains two of Bachs incomparable solo concertosfeaturing the the young and bright cembalo-talent, Marcus Mohlin alongside Alfredo Bernardini.

The Belcea Quartet adds to the line of top string quartets having visited Hindsgavl Festival the recentyears. The quartet’s regular partners include pianist Piotr Anderszewski (Hindsgavl 2017) and violaplayer Antoine Tamestit. The latter reinforces the quartet in the wonderful string quintets by Mozartand Brahms of this evenings program. Bartoks 6th string quartet is also on the program. The completeBartok quartets is part of the impressive discographie of the quartet thanks to the long termassociation with EMI Classics.

The first concert of the day continues yesterdays series of Bach cantata: ”Weichet nur betrübteSchatten” with the young Danish soprano Eline Soelmark as soloist in front of Concerto Copenhagen(CoCo). Still studying in the advanced postgraduate soloist level at the conservary in Copenhagen, shehas already had some outstanding solo performances – especially in the early music genres withCoCo and Camerata Øresund. (Note: This short performance has a very limited number of seats.)

The late concert features the German composer and video artist Michael Beil whose ingenious andinnovative works often have a direct appeal to most audiences. Therefore, to the very fewcontemporary music sceptics in the Hindsgavl audience: Stay up and treat yourself with anunforgettable experience.

French Quatuor Modigliani had their Denmark debut on Hindsgavl Festival in 2011 and has since comeback to the festival a couple of times always swiping the feet of the audience and festival crew withtheir magnificent performances. This time they do a pure Brahms program and bring along a true starpianist: Nicholas Angelich. Brahms and Beethoven is the core of his repertoire and he has recorded thework of these two giants to great acclaim.

“…Nicholas Angelich is one of the greatest living interpreters of Brahms. It has a complex architecture, subtle colors and depth of spirit. He knows how to make clear the dense language of the Germancomposer without altering its power. He managed to make us forget the difficulty of the dauntingscore, playing freely, with beautiful sound, a wide dynamic range, without virtuosity or effort, henever let us forget the overwhelming message of the music he embodied with all his soul.” - OlivierBellamy, Huffington Post, June 2012.

Danish-French Dreisig is probably among the greatest singing talents around these days: In 2016 shewon the Plácido Domingos World Opera Competition and in September 2017 she practically stole thepicture at the Berliner Philharmonic season opening performing with ”Hindsgavl-stars” Mark Padmore(Hindsgavl 2018) and Florian Boesch (Hindsgavl 2014).

The evening comes to an end in ‘wild’ clubbing mood with the German composer and video artistsMichael Beils work Caracan, performed by Ensemble Garage from Köln/Cologne.

A special treat awaits us when Hindsgavl Festival 2018 closes with a piano recital with 27 year oldFrench pianist Lucas Debargue. Debargues’ very personal musical expression brings memories tosome of the big legendary pianists from the 20th century. Debargue was in 2017 one of the top artistsat the Swiss Verbier Festival where they have a very special talent in finding new and great pianists.Just think of Yuja Wang (Hindsgavl artist 2014) og Daniil Trifonov.

The recital consists of a ‘Polish’ program with Chopin in the first half and in the second the turbulent-monumental piano sonata by Szymanovski from 1911.

In the afternoon: Beautiful music for string sextet. The sextet by Richard Strauss is part of the story linein the opera ‘Cappricio’ from 1942, but is often performed in concerts as an independent work.Tjajkovskijs travel memories from Firenze, Souvenir de Florence, is among the most popular work ofthe Russian master. The colossal energy outburst and the captivating melodies arose great enthusiamat the premiere in 1892. Six of Scandinavias finest string talents interpret the sextets. The young artistsknow each other from the Nordic Talent Ensemble housed by Hindsgavl Festival the previous threeseasons.

We have fitted the World Cup final (football!) into the day program so that those interested may enjoythe final from Moscow without missing out on music or food. The game starts at 17:00 and will beshown on big screens in the castle.
