Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012
8th Grade Science
Today we will…
8.10(A): recognize that the sun provides the energy that drive convection within the atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents.
8.10(B): identify how global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather using weather maps that show high and low pressures and fronts.
Today’s Objective: Students will demonstrate how convection currents drive ocean currents.

8th Grade Science
Moving in Circles
1. Put on your safety goggles.2. Fill plastic container ¾ full of water. 3. Balance container on 4 beakers and let water
settle.4. Place 3-4 drops of red food coloring on the
bottom of the container on one side.5. Remove ice from cup and place on opposite
side.6. Using safety gloves, pick up beaker of hot
water and place it under the plastic container beneath the red food coloring.
7. On page __ of your INB, draw a picture and record your observations.

Reading Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012
Read: Why Does the Wind Blow
On page __ of your INB, answer the following
questions.
1. What is a convention current?2. How do convention currents affect
winds?3. What is the source of energy that
drives convention currents?4. Student choice...write a question and
answer it using text evidence from the reading.
8th Grade Science
Ocean Currents Wednesday & Thursday, October 24 & 25, 2012
On your handout, label currents in the ocean.
Cold currents will be colored blue.
Warm currents will be colored red.
Paste the ocean current page into your INB on page __.
8th Grade Science
Analysis Questions
On page __ of your INB, complete analysis questions in pairs: one partner completes a question and the other checks their work. Then switch roles for the next question.
1. Explain how the blue water and red water move in the container.
2. Why do you think they move this way?3. If the water represents the ocean, how does the
water in the ocean move?4. Recall that thermal energy moves in a predictable
pattern from warmer to cooler areas. How is this concept illustrated in this model?
5. Does this model show energy distribution by radiation, conduction, or convection?
