Overview Solar farms are difficult to secure and offer many unique
challenges.
Their remote locations and vast size make security difficult to
ensure. In addition to material loss, intrusion and theft can
cause high repair and run-on costs, and further extending the
downtime period and subsequent loss of revenue.
The ability to monitor a wide range of events over a vast
amount of area in varied weather conditions, while accurately
identifying potential threats and reacting within a few seconds
is a complicated scenario.
Challenges at Kamuthi Solar Farm
Securing the world’s second largest solar park with
security guards is challenging, cumbersome and
prone to security lapses.
Round the clock surveillance through all weather and
lighting conditions is a tough ask for the CCTVs.
It is impossible for human operators to analyze all the
videos from numerous cameras to detect suspicious
behavior or events.
Perimeter Surveillance with CCTV
A highly sensitive full-HD CCTV camera with IR illumination can
be deployed to secure the perimeter. This will enable the
monitoring station to detect the source of threat up to 50m
during night and 300m during day (using camera at max focal
length). For detection beyond 50m at night, perimeter must
be well lit with extra lighting every 50m.
Thermal cameras
have overtaken
CCTVs as the
preferred camera for
perimeter
surveillance.

Limitations
The operation range of a CCTV Camera reduces
drastically in the night (~50m) compared to daytime
which reduces response time window.
CCTVs do not perform optimally in adverse weather
conditions like Rain, Fog and Smoke.
Higher computing power is required for processing
CCTV camera.
The Field of View (FOV) becomes narrower with long-
range lens.
Higher cost of ownership.
Perimeter Surveillance with Thermal Cameras
Unlike the traditional CCTV cameras, thermal cameras can see
through all weather and light conditions.
Tonbo Imaging’s Knight suite of cameras are smart, rugged
and have in-built edge analytics that lets you not only capture
uninterrupted footage, but also intelligently interprets it for
you. Knight also supports powering using solar panels.
Advantages
Allows uninterrupted operation in all weather and
lighting conditions.
Can monitor larger areas without lighting, thus
reducing total cost of ownership.
Cloud Connected. Footage captured can be
compressed and sent wirelessly over WiFi or LTE
network to cloud to be accessed by future users from
anywhere in the world.
In-built video analytics and video stabilization
eliminates false notifications and improves system
reliability.
Lower installation, maintenance and operating cost.
Traditional CCTVs are
rendered ineffective in
poor weather and
lighting conditions.
Their operational
range reduces to 50m
at night.

Sample Deployment Scenario
Summary
Solar farms in remote locations are vulnerable to vandalism and
theft and early warning of potential threats to alert local law
enforcement is essential. All-weather, monitoring solutions are
required to provide round-the-clock perimeter security.
Knight cameras with support for WiFi/LTE enables easy & fast
installation; connectivity to cloud services reduces upfront
installation cost, maintenance cost and enables the system to
scale up easily. Multiple remote sites can be monitored from a
single command center anytime, anywhere in the world. Further,
inbuilt edge analytics in the Knight camera reduces false alarms
as well as network bandwidth costs.
Knight thermal cameras provide an efficient and cost-effective
solution, day or night.

Other Products of Interest
ZEOS: A remotely controlled, compact and economical
multisensor fusion system that combines critical spectral
information from IR feed with visible camera feed to enhance
situational awareness and provide errorfree identification. With
GPS and magnetic compass, it can geo reference the target
position and geo point with high accuracy.
EOD: A remotely operated multisensor fusion system built with a
pan tilt unit that simultaneously processes images from different
feeds to display a fused scene. With additional sensors it can
range to the target at an eye safe wavelength, and calculate
target’s grid coordinates with its own GPS capability. The system
can seamlessly integrate with existing security camera network.
T-REX: A long range multisensor fusion system that combines IR
and day camera feeds to increase scene detail. It is integrated
with a long range laser range finder, GPS and compass to identify
and advanced tracking algorithm to track intrusion and prepare
for countermeasure well ahead of time.
