2. 1 A prisoner was attempting to escape from a tower. He found a rope in his cell that was half as long enough to permit him to reach the ground safely. He divided the rope in half, tied the two parts together, and escaped. How could he have done this? 3. 2 What are the next three numbers in this series? 4, 6, 12, 18, 30, 42, 60, 72, 102, 108, ?, ?, ? 4. 3 A group of 100 soldiers suffered the following injuries in a battle: 70 soldiers lost an eye, 75 lost an ear, 85 lost a leg, and 80 lost an arm. What is the minimum number of soldiers who must have lost all 4? 5. 4 A man who lives on the tenth floor takes the elevator down to the first floor every morning and goes to work. In the evening, when he comes back; on a rainy day, or if there are other people in the elevator, he goes to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment. Can you explain why? 6. 5 Four people come to a river in the night. There is a narrow bridge, but it can only hold two people at a time. They have one torch and, because it's night, the torch has to be used when crossing the bridge. Person A can cross the bridge in 1 minute, B in 2 minutes, C in 5 minutes, and D in 8 minutes. When two people cross the bridge together, they must move at the slower person's pace. The question is, can they all get across the bridge in 15 minutes or less? 7. 6 Your last good ping-pong ball fell down into a narrow metal pipe imbedded in concrete one foot deep. How can you get it out undamaged, if all the tools you have are your tennis paddle, your shoe- laces, and your plastic water bottle, which does not fit into the pipe? 8. 7 Who makes it, has no need of it. Who buys it, has no use for it. Who uses it can neither see nor feel it. What is it? 9. 8 BERLIN 200 miles PARIS 300 miles ROME 400 miles AMSTERDAM 300 miles CARDIFF ??? Miles How far should it be to Cardiff ? 10. A: 1. He cut the rope lengthwise, and tied the two ends together. 2. The series lists numbers that are flanked by two prime numbers. 138 (137 and 139 are prime), 150 (149 and 151 are prime), 180 (179 and 181 are prime) 3. Add up all the injuries, and you find that 100 soldiers suffered a total of 310 injuries. That total means that, at a minimum, 100 soldiers (it is, of course, not 100 soldiers, but 100 as calculation from 310 person-injuries out of 400 possible) lost 3 body parts, and 10 (the remainder when dividing 310 by 100) must have lost all 4 body parts. (In reality, as many as 70 may have lost all 4 body parts.) 11. A: 4.) The man is of short stature. He can't reach the upper elevator buttons, but he can ask people to push them for him. He can also push them with his umbrella! 5.)A and B cross forward, taking 2 minutes. A returns, taking 1 minute. C and D cross forward, taking 8 minutes. B returns, taking 2 minutes. A and B cross forward, taking 2 minutes! 6.)All you have to do is pour some water into the pipe so that the ball swims up on the surface! 7.) A Coffin! 8.) 100 miles. Each vowel is worth 300 and each consonant -100. Each city gives the distance! 12. Inspired?
